More info about media in Nautilus' statusbar
Written by forteller the 4 Sep 08 at 13:41. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
When I select a music file, video file or picture in Nautilus I would like to get some basic information about them in the status bar:

- For video and music: Length and quality.
- For pictures: Size (in pixels)

I think it's annoying that I have to open a movie just to find out how long it is.

Play button should change to pause button on Rhythmbox
Written by belovedmonster the 12 Mar 08 at 10:25. Global category: Look and Feel. Implemented
One thing that always throws me when using Rhythmbox is the way the Play button is a pause button when playing a song but the icon remains a "play" icon. So in order to pause a song you have to press a play icon again. This is really bad interface design.

Every other music app I've ever used has the icon change to denote the new function. When the button plays its a play icon and when it pauses its a pause icon. Why doesn't rhythmbox do this?

Lively Ubuntu homepage
Written by Jeisson the 18 Apr 08 at 17:43. Global category: Internet & Networking. Not an idea
I like to visit the Ubuntu.com homepage frequently, in order to know the number of days to next release, to get some news about the project, to learn more about the system, but it seems a photograph.

I imagine there are lots of resources on Internet with that information, but they are not linked from Ubuntu homepage. For example, Ubuntu Brainstorm is a great idea, but it is not linked neither!

I think, homepage should be a lively commonplace to Ubuntu users and potential new users. It should have:

* News about the operating system and the project, new features just implemented, programmers required for..., etc., etc.
* A complex search engine for documentation only related to Ubuntu. It could search into the docs (help.ubuntu.com), forums, wikis, tutorials...
* Link to related and useful projects: Brainstorm, cdimage, Ubuntu Rescue Remix, getdeb.net, Forums... It could resemble labs.google.com
* Resources: backgrounds, screen-savers, useful programs, hotows...

I think, people could give more recommendations. Ubuntu is a great project and the web face of it should reflect that ;)

A simple installation of applications (eg. double-click)
Written by jorluiseptor the 12 Mar 08 at 21:14. Global category: System. Implemented
I dont wanna know if I have a debian/kde/gnome (whatever the difference is) before I try to install an application.

I'd like to have applications be installed as easily as double-clicking on a setup.exe in Windows.

In Ubuntu/Linux i have to open a terminal, put some abracadabra, cross my fingers, and hope that it install correctly! A regular user wont like that.

A .deb should be able to add itself a repository to add auto update function
Written by samovian the 19 Apr 08 at 08:11. Global category: System. New
Installing a software by double clicking on a .deb is now really simple thanks to gdebi. But a a software installed by this method will not be able to auto update. So I propose that a .deb will be able to propose to the user to add a repository in order to stay up to date.

Make it possible for people to subscribe to a idea for help to make a idea possi
Written by ubby the 24 Aug 08 at 13:19. Global category: Others. New
Make it possible for people to subscribe to a idea for help to make a idea possible.

I think there are many people in the Ubuntu community that are graphic artists or programmers.
This way you can create a team under the supervision of some one from Canonical that can make a idea possible.

If people can subscribe to a idea Canonical can see which people want to help to make the idea possible.
I think this way ideas can be reality in a faster way.

Make the Ubuntu countdown in PHP (Gd for instance) instead of Javascript
Written by neotenshi the 30 Mar 08 at 19:32. Global category: Marketing. New
Make the countdown to Ubuntu releases be considered as an image (e.g. using PHP and GD or some other library) instead of Javascript. The advantages of doing so are :

1) no need of Javascript : because the countdown is treated as an image, people whose Javascript is disabled (or unavaible) are still able to see it
2) easier to include : at the moment it is impossible to add the countdown in phpBB forums for instance, because phpBB doesn't allow Javascript scripts from users. Using a graphical library instead makes it easier to include in every type of page

Plus, this doesn't seem very difficult to make, nor does it seem ressources-greedy

Push for Dell-Ubuntu Laptops Cheaper than Dell-M$
Written by carickw the 15 Aug 08 at 14:00. Global category: Marketing. New
I just looked online to see how much a Dell with Ubuntu preloaded was and then looked at the same laptop with windows. To my amazement, the Ubuntu laptop was not even the same price as the Windows one, it was MORE!!!

The laptop I looked at was the XPS M1330 and the Windows version was $999 - $100 savings = 899, while the Ubuntu version was still at $999. Even though the smart ones (us) know about the benefits of using ubuntu, whats the incentive to buy the open source Ubuntu over the well-known Windows platform.

Right now, Vista Home Premium is about a $100, so the fact that ubuntu is free, the same computer with Ubuntu should be ~$100 less than the Windows computer with home premium.

Mirror (to see yourself) in Compiz
Written by HermanChess the 27 Aug 08 at 07:52. Related project: Compiz. New
If people have webcams, I think its a nice idea to have a face of the cube that is actually a mirror, that is to see yourself in full screen. So let's say you want to have a quick check on yourself, you do "ctrl + alt + up" and it changes to the mirror. Im saying compiz because it can actually make the whole cube more useful, but it can be a separate piece of software, that can be nicely integrated with a good shortcut.
