Saned takes forever to set up and get it working. I had it before working but it later broke and stopped working. I'm trying to set it up again right now and I'm getting very angry. I've been working on this for 2 hours and I can't take it anymore. I'm about ready to give up.

Brainstorm users Jabber MUC/IRC channel

There doesn't seem to be an IRC channel for Brainstorm users to argue with one another in.
It would be good to have one to encourage the development of new ideas, and help identify ideas faster which are implemented, and also gives a place where people can ask for technical knowledge on their idea (as some aren't even possible because the poster doesn't know the basics). The brainstorm channel could offer somewhere for users to go and discuss ideas, to improve the quality of ideas that get posted and encourage discussion.
May I suggest making it brainstorm on irc.ubuntu.com?

Fujitsu WLAN support in Intrepid.

I have a new Fujitsu Siemens Li2727/35 laptop, and the wireless is not currently supported.
It is possible to make the WiFi work by replacing an AcerHK MadWifi module, however this is a quite un-elegant solution, and support built in to the distro would be very useful.

Easy audio settings good audio hardver support

Hy,
at this moment is very hard to configure the audio settings, because there are several possibilities what you can choose:
alsa, pulse, oss, and the audio chipsets in my case NVIDIA CK 804 - IEC 958, Nvidia NVIDIA CK 804.
So in my case 5 possibilities to chose the right mode for audio settings.
But from this five possibility none of them are good:
- alsa: you can play more then 1 audio file in paralel, but you can not use dolby and dts, you can not change the audio volume from the audio or video players (I'm using optical connection between my computer and my amplifier)
- pulse: you can not run more audio files in parallel, you can not play dts, ad dolby, you can change the audio volume from the player
- oss dts and dolby is working but you can not play more audio files in parallel, and you can not change the voulme form the player
- NVIDIA ....IEC 958 i don't know what is for.
- NVIDIA .... i don't know what is for.
So actually we have a lot audio manager and all of them are just partialy usable for a general user for general PC using: game, music, movie, applications.
My suggestion is to make just one audio manager from five but this should be easy to configure, and should work easily in all situation!
(If you are not able to write the proper software for all chipset than lets implement the same situation as at the video cards: the chipset maker should provide the driver).
If you are voting with minus pls explain, because I do not understand why some people do not want to have just one strong audio manager instead of 5 which are good for nothing!

Send the hell OO3 and create own .docx reader/writer.

I am trying at OpenOffice 3 rc4 right now and asked a friend to send me a .docx file in order to check if it worked.
The file is 15.9kb and only appear a big ink splash. I searched on internet to see if someone could make it work on any linux distro and looks like they haven't.
I suggest to create a special package for read and write .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files since the OO3 fails on that.
And don't start with "IS YOUR FAULT" dance since I download and install the packages and they didn't worked.
If you don't believe me then here is http://rapidshare.com/files/153511617/diagramas_4.docx.html the file, just 15.9kb of epic fail.

adopt opencl for the graphics layer in Ubuntu

Since OS X and Nvidia are both pledging support for opencl, I think Ubuntu should too. This way it is less work on the developer when creating an application that needs to use the hardware acceleration that the video card provides if it supports opencl.

Eat your own dog food

So, the question is, what exactly is the reason launchpad and brainstorm aren't open source yet? You know, things like this just help erode ubuntu's image, it will be a large boost in ubuntu's image if things like this could be made open source, well, Jhon Doe doesn't care about this, but you should know that many devs. do, and Ubuntu could use a larger dev community, in my opinion. I titled this "Eat your own dog food" because there is another reason rather than image with the community, there is also the image with people outside of the open source world, why would an OS that promotes such things as being 100% guaranteeing that it will stay free, and an OS that is such a flag project for open source in general, not have a FOSS tracker platform?
The website software could help many infant open source projects have a good platform for their things, also, remember that open source is a good development strategy, opening up these projects will speed new features and bug fixes...

Package manager revamp.
|
|
Written by anyedge the 12 Oct 08 at 19:35. Category: System.
Related to: Synaptic package manager.
New
|
|
I have read many topics about combining the different package managers for Ubuntu. I propose that a new package manager be created altogether. One of my biggest problems with almost all linux distros is that installing/upgrading packages effects other packages that may use some/all of the same dependencies. Distros like Gobolinux have found away around that. PC-BSD also has developed their own method(although there is the issue of duplicate files). Even the Conary package manager has found a way around this. Basically, what I am suggesting is a package manager that can allow multiple versions of files to exist on the system simultaneously. The package manager should be able to keep track of all package installs/updates(ala aptitude) and remove files that become obsolete once all programs using that particular files are using newer versions of said file. This will allow people to install/upgrade without the risk of messing up other programs. It will also make it easier on programmers, developers and the Ubuntu staff to update programs(or the distro) without having to go through the entire distro to make sure that all programs will work with the new dependency. This should also greatly lower bugs.

Ease of transfer from Windows

*Dead* This functionality is already in Ubuntu
Transferring to a new operating system can be daunting, even for some experienced computer users. Many may feel that Windows is not an efficient OS but continue to use it out of habit and fear of difficulty transferring documents. Instead of proposing a specific idea myself, I want to begin this topic to see if we can come up with a way to increase ease of users transferring from Windows. We need to find a way to automate or even dumbdown the transfer process so that my grandmother can switch to Ubuntu.

don't active wobbly plugin by default

I think wobbly is a plugin that can disturb who doesn't like it. it's too noticeable to be activated by default. tired eyes can get "injured" by the changes of resolution and distortion that take place and we are moving a window.
I agree that it's an applet that calls attention from potentially linux users, but it's unlike fades that make the use of the computer more smooth, it distracts you when you just want to move windows making you lose your focus.

I think we should make it so that when an idea is voted down or voted up, they have to include why they chose to do that. This is not the same as comments. For them, we include voting up and down with having to put a reason each time.
And then at the end of it, we should be able to see how many votes each idea got so that we don't just see an idea is +10 votes or -10 votes, but we see for example 100 people voted it up and another 110 voted it down.
This would show an idea is more popular then it might appear to be or less popular then it appears to be. This would prevent those who don't like Ubuntu being less linux like in their eyes and get the ideas implemented that Ubuntu needs to for an end user to consider using it.

Hide non-gui apps in Synaptic by default

This idea targets Synaptic. My suggestion is that Synaptic by default should filter out applications that doesn't have a GUI or end up in the menus.
Why? It's in line with Ubuntus "for human beeings" and I guess the rest of us uses the command prompt (i.e apt-get) anyway.
I also know the package maintainers already adds a URL to the package if it exist - another great thing would be to actually add a kind of thumb nail image for the application. There are tons of great apps out there - we just don't know about them.
Synaptic + the repository is a killer application in itself - lets make it even sharper.

Remove implemented ideas after period of time

Hi,
I've read a few similar ideas that address this issue. This difference of mine is as follows:
When an idea has been worked on and implemented into Ubuntu it is marked as implemented (as usual)
Although, after a period of time (e.g. a month or 6, etc.) those implemented ideas are removed.
This will free space on the servers and reduce the load on searching. (Also, if an idea has been implemented for a certain amount of time, no-one will post about implementing it)
If Brainstorm already does this, sorry for the stupid post.

Add freecell feature

Freecell is one of my favourite games, although I think it is lacking one feature: game numbers. (Being able to play a particular game e.g. 1-1000000)
I know it's not a big deal, but it's fun to race your friends on a particular game, or to keep a tally of the games you have completed. (When I used Windows, I had a notepad file with about 150 game numbers) (Quite lame : I know)
I haven't found this feature, but if it is available, let me know.
From what I know about programming, this wouldn't be a difficult feature to implement.
Thanks for reading.
