There is wizard on Evolution's first start, that forces users to enter all email details. There should be option to create basic account without email, because some people want to use just calendar and contact functionality.

Replace Evolution with more modular PIM system

Evolution is so horrible that I don't have words to describe just how much I don't like it. Thunderbird, quite frankly, doesn't cut it either.
Ubuntu needs to find a PIM that is MODULAR. I hate evolution because I never used the notes or tasks features, didn't like the way the calendar worked, and hated waiting for it to load all those extra features every time I wanted to read an e-mail. Thunderbird's address book doesn't do everything I need it to do, but there's no way of switching it with a different address book.
We need a lightweight, fast, diverse and simple e-mail application integrated into the system. We also need a lightweight, fast, diverse and simple contacts management application integrated into the system. Those should NOT be the same application.
KOrganizer has the right idea, but we can't get KDE and GNOME mixed up in a default setup. Too many libraries, too many resources, way too slow.

Offer to use default system sounds

On "System → Configuration → Audio" you can set system sounds. Offer an option to use the default sound from /usr/share/sounds. I don't want to look for them myself.
May people can't read english, so they do not know what "warning.wav" does mean.

Make packet management ready for a decentral network

The current packet management system of Ubuntu, dpkg, is build for this conditions:
* All packages do come from a central repository
* The user trusts this repository with all its packages fully
* Software is installed by the system administrator
In future the number of software for ubuntu will may grow up. So they will be may application provider who don't want to their software in the ubuntu repository. If they provide the user an debian package, he shouldn't install it, because he does not fully trust this application provider. The package could be a rootkit. Also you always need to ask your administrator to install an package. You can't even install something in your home directory.
The new packet management system of Ubuntu should be build for this new conditions:
* Packages do come from a decentral network
* Packages are trust differently
* Packages can be installed by most users

Ubuntu needs better aural feedback

I think that Ubuntu needs to give the user better feedback for their actions. For example if you copy a small file from one folder to another, nothing seems to happen. If the file operations progress bar doesn't pop up, you have no idea if your computer just did what you asked it to do. You have to visually check that the file has been copied.
To me, the most obvious solution is to introduce a better and more comprehensive default sound theme. In my example, a short sound event could provide confirmation that the file has been copied. There are other examples - file operations; starting applications, changing system settings etc.
I know that a lot of people like their systems to be as silent as possible; but there's no reason why this should be the default. When you think about people trying out Ubuntu for the first time, they might not be so sure of themselves or the desktop environment. I think better sounds could provide an extra level of reassurance, and provide a richer experience overall.

Ubuntu currently doesn't upgrade the kernel, it just keeps adding newer and newer kernels to the system.
Currently, the list of kernels installed on a Ubuntu system grows over time. This takes up additional disk space and adds clutter to the boot loader.
Ideally, older kernels should be removed automatically.
Maybe leave current and current-1, but not _all_ of them...

Show always an error message if something does not work

|

I propose a new usability guideline:
* Show always an error message if something does not work
Backends must bequeath error messages to their frontends. (Exception handling)
Also error messages should be translated to other languages.
If I connect my computer with the network, it doesn't work and I don't know why, I'm disappointed. If I want to start an application and it doesn't, I'll want see the reason.
If someone tells me "I can't start my application", I want to know the reason to help this person.
Easy error messages like "You hadn't connect your computer with a network" or "This application isn't anymore installed" do help any user too. For difficult problems ("Your hardware with ID x is defect. Technical Notes:") you can call someone, who can read your error message.
There should be a option to send software errors to a bug database (launchpad). (e.g. syntax errors in python application, error in communication between frontend and backend can only be a bug and no user blame)
Another example: "No plugins found" in Quod Libet. Why?

I don't want to modify always my ubuntu systems so they send their host name (and their client identifier) to the dhcp server. This is really nasty. Please enable that feature by default. Anyway it doesn't work with network manager 0.7. Workaround: manually set your MAC as Client ID in NM.

"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."
→ This is very frequent problem and a lot of beginners dont'know why fix the problem/resolve it.
Just please look here: see - https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+faq/52 - this FAQ located/placed on Launchpad website and during 1 month there are already 15 "related questions", so that means this is very often problem.
It would be fine thing to have some automatic utility to fix this problem, but it will be enough to make this error message more user friendly (for now it's very misleading information).

Use Internet Media Type instead of Shebang
|

Written by natureflow the 4 Aug 08 at 09:03. Category: System.

Use Internet Media Type instead of Shebang. The system does already know my file is application/javascript. So I don't want to add the shebang ("magic line")
#!/usr/bin/js
This makes my javascript file invalid:
typein:1: SyntaxError: illegal character:
typein:1: #!/usr/bin/js
typein:1: ^
Additional on other operating system this path doesn't exist.
So I want just to enter "/usr/bin/myapp" (file has type application/javascript and no shebang) in my terminal to run it.
Note that shebang (#! line) is NO security feature. There's no security problem executing an file without shebang.

Thunderbird's threaded view is not as great as Gmail conversations.
- threads don't include Sent mails
- threads detection sometimes splits conversations
- no way to read a whole thread just scrolling down
There could be a way to extend Thunderbird threads management and make it compete with the most famous commercial webmail :)

NetworkManager 0.7 offers many, many feature that are urgently needed in hardy/networking.
I think it will be included in Intrepid Ibex, but since hardy is a LTS release it would be fine to have it at least in the backports repo.

Provide the ability to update the system just by right-clicking on the update icon->silent update (or anything) so that no window appears and the full process runs in background. (only for official and authenticated packages of course)

Give the administrator a message if multiple user have installed the same application in their home directory to install the application for every user.
