Archive manager should support popular zip,rar formats, redesign interface.
Written by dragoninsane the 9 Jul 08 at 20:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Archive manager make it the best archive manager out there.
Problems already reported by other users like
1)Cant extract files if the files are split into seperate archives like Winrar does, search for part or locate other part on disk should it prompt.
2)Improve support for various popular formats not just tar,bz
to do:RAR,Zip,7z,ACE etc
3)Also should be able to open iso images(too hard winrar does This :(
4)Extract to other place rather than directory in which file is located
5)Report errors if some archive is damaged or unfinished file in archive, corrupt?
Most future proof idea would be to include search for virus before extraction(if some antivirus is installed in system).

Keep hard drives (and partitions) off the desktop
Written by John Karahalis the 12 May 08 at 23:12. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the things I love about Ubuntu is that it keeps the desktop very clean, as opposed to Windows which uses the desktop as a dump truck, resulting in useless clutter.

Unfortunately, Ubuntu's desktop does contain icons for each partition and external hard drive. Worse, there isn't an obvious way to remove them from the desktop. These icons are more than useless considering the same volumes can be easily accessed in the "Places" menu.

The icons can be hidden by a simple edit to the gconf settings:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2007/10/25/hide-partition-icons-from-your-ubuntu- desktop (remove the space in the URL)

I, and likely many others, would prefer this setting by default.

Merge add/remove programms and synaptic
Written by natureflow the 16 Mar 08 at 15:04. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A good software is usable and useful for beginners and experts. Please merge "add/remove programms" and synaptic. There should be no "dummy mode". I'm not a "dummy", but I want an easy user interface.

Don`t ask "Whats your name?" - make it clearly optional!
Written by Theodore the 3 Apr 08 at 19:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This question is really unless for an installer. It`s about privacy. People switch from windows to linux because them hope that there is no phone home. Why should an operating system ask for the real name them are thinking.

There is no real need to brand the operating system with this information. The user can enter his name in programs he really want to itself.

Clear-your-tracks privacy tool
Written by sebsauvage the 11 Mar 08 at 14:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome (and lots of applications) keep a history of most recently used files and directories.
For example, Nautilus keeps track of most recent directories.

There is no simple way to cleanup all these tracks.

Ubuntu lacks a privacy-cleaning tool, like CCleaner under Windows (sorry).

Improvements for 'Appearance' settings No.1: gnome-look implementation
Written by taron the 9 May 08 at 19:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a new user discovers gnome-look.org, he will see the following categories:
Wallpapers
GTK 1.x
GTK 2.x
Metacity
Compiz
Beryl
Icons
GDM Themes
Splash Screens
Desklets
Screenlets
XMMS Themes
Screenshots
Fonts
Cliparts
Systemsounds
X11 Mouse Themes
Topaz Brainstorm
Cairo-Clock Themes
Screensavers
Nautilus Scripts
Maemo
Other

But which one is, for example, the right category to change the theme from Human/etc. to a new one?

There are also e.g. both GTK themes and GTK engines, and they are both in the 'GTK' categories.

I propose an implementation of gnome-look (or kde-look, or xfce-look) so that in the "Theme" tab there ain't only the button 'install' but also 'more skins' or sth. like that.

Make the RAM disk more accessible to users
Written by jsereno the 10 May 08 at 00:54. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The RAM disk at /dev/shm is a very useful device, especially for temporarily extracting archives to (remember the Amiga days?). The convenience of automatic deletion of temporary data like that at reboot cannot be understated.

Currently few new users are aware of it. A link to /dev/shm should be added by default to the Places menu and perhaps an option somewhere to display it as a volume icon on the desktop would be good too, rather than have to manually create a launcher for it, though the latter is not really a big deal.

real plug and play   forum
Written by tester the 11 May 08 at 13:24. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
this GUI will help the user to run the right application depended on what hardware the user plugged in or open up

this GUI will NOT be depended on if the application is installed or not installed.

for example:
if i plug or open up my scanner, Ubuntu will pop up a window and recommend to my to install and to run specific scanner tool.
but,if i plug or open up my scanner, and the scanner tool is already installed, Ubuntu will only ask my to run the tool.

the same with: mobile phone, PDA...

why is it good:
- i don't need scanner tool if i don't have scanner
- i don't need PDA tool if i don't have PDA
...
- easy way to use hardware
- those application will have a better from support
- better translations
- new level for hardware support

GUI system configuration utilities should expose the files they modify.
Written by xiota the 29 Feb 08 at 00:44. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many GUI configuration utilities work by modifying config files. They should tell the users what files they modify and the modifications they make because sometimes it's easier, faster, or necessary to edit configuration files for functionality the GUI tool does not support, but figuring out what files are involved can be more difficult than actually making the changes.

Even if users don't intend to edit the configuration files, knowing which files are modified and how will help users to build accurate mental models about the tools they use, which will help them to effectively use those tools to accomplish their goals.

Drag select in Nautilus Please
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please consider modifying nautilus to enable drag and select multiple files in Nautilus list view. This is an incredibly annoying deficiency which is not present in virtually any other file manager I have used.

Restart X instead of Ubuntu with graphics driver install/update
Written by Blueface the 13 Mar 08 at 19:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, when I install the restricted nvidia drivers, Ubuntu wants me to restart the whole system. Why not restart just the X-server instead? That would save some time.

It could also appeal to Windows-users when they find out that a full restart of the system isn't needed in Linux.

Put creative commons education books in a repository
Written by matthekc the 17 Mar 08 at 09:57. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice to have a one stop place to look for the many available education books available. I think lack of awareness that free books exist is slowing their advance and it would nice for Ubuntu too.

autoremove should remove ALL needless librarys
Written by natureflow the 19 Mar 08 at 09:14. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
sudo apt-get autoremove should remove ALL needless librarys.
You can also use deborphan for this, but it would be better if deborphan would be integrated in apt-get.

I find it hard to resize windows. The borders are not big enough to grab easily. I think it would be good if there was an extra invisible gap of a few pixels around the borders that you can grab on to so you don't have to visually make the borders thicker.

Improving File Roller
Written by letronje the 6 Mar 08 at 12:36. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
(a)

When the user right clicks on an archive file like zip,rar,7z,etc, the options provided are :

1) Open with archive manager
2) Extract here

It would be nice to have the following menu option:
extract to

(b)

When opening an archive, file roller seems to read the entire archive in one go(or file roller is very slow in reading list of files in an archive). So, if the archive is really big, the user doesn't get to see the list of files & dir in it unless the entire archive hierarchy is fetched. I think WinRAR shows the list of stuff at the top level in the archive & reads the remaining archive hierarchy in background & the list shown in the UI is updated incrementally .

(c)

The File roller UI for creating archives by right clicking on folders is too simple and needs some more options like:

1) Delete files after archiving
2) options for selecting compression level
3) options for splitting archive across multiple files
4) password protection

Again Win RAR has a good UI for this

(d) There could be a context menu option for adding selected file(s)/folders(s) to an existing archive. Something like 'Add to archive'

Make latest version available
Written by mbv the 1 Mar 08 at 10:58. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd sometimes like to have the latest version available of some software package. At this moment, I'd like to try out Pidgin 2.4 to see if it is any good. In the past I've installed Thunderbird 2.0 while 1.5 was the latest in the repo's, and Eclipse 3.2 while 3.0 was in the repo's. Also videocard-drivers are a real pain in the ass (try dual-screen with 3d-acceleration on an ATi card), so I'd like to check out the latest FGLRX-package without all the hassle.

What I propose is an option in e.g. Synaptic, that allows me to install the latest version available, like Debian backports. I don't expect them to be fully tested, just a .deb version of the latest patch released by the 'vendor'. I'd then try out that version, and if I dislike it (e.g. it crashes) there should be an option to go back to the supported version.

That would look like:
- start Synaptic
- go to the installed packages
- go to my favorite package
- right-click, upgrade to latest vendor release
- apply
- show a dialog box: "This package is not tested by Ubuntu, do you want to continue or keep the old version?"

Don't have to drag the playhead to move position when playing media
Written by belovedmonster the 12 Mar 08 at 20:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One thing that drives me potty about Totem and Rhythmbox is that unlike all the other apps I've used (on windows) you can't simply click anywhere on the "timeline" to move to that portion of the song/video instead you have to actually click on the moving playhead marker and drag it where you want.

So if I want to skip to the last 30 seconds of a song I can't just click near the end of the timeline, I have to actually drag the playhead all the way across to the end.

Which do you think is easiest? ....

Click
or
Click + drag + release

I'll give you a clue. It aint the the process that takes 3 steps!

Something nit-picky I've always hated about Archive Manager is the fact that I can't extract files to a folder or to my desktop by simply dragging and dropping them somewhere (like I can with a Windows box and any archiving program with a GUI, like Winzip or WinRAR).

Sure, I can click "Extract Files" and then browse through folders to find the path I want, but if I could drag and drop to extract from (and add to) archives, it would sure save me a lot of time. And possible save newbies a little frustration.
