When saving in OpenOffice it should give the first few words as file-name option
Written by kramer65 the 22 Sep 08 at 17:02. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
I often make documents which I quickly need to save. In MS Word it then simply gives the first few words as filename option which you can then of course change as you like, but it is at least something.

If I save something in OOo it doesn't give anything. So if I need to save something I cannot simply click save > save. I need to think of a name. And although that is not a hard thing, if I'm in the rush of work and I got a document which simply should have the same title as the first few words in the document (eg. "friday-list for Bob") I want it to go quick.

It is a small thing, but it would make my life again a little bit easier. :-)

Ask to install codec when trying to play a youtube-video in Totem
Written by pepperpupper the 24 Sep 08 at 15:05. Category: Usability. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
I think it would be useful if Totem would ask to install the appropriate codec when you try to watch a youtube-video using the plug-in in Totem. As it does with all other codecs...

Seamless Shutdown
Written by sparky11 the 29 Aug 08 at 21:07. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Shutdown needs to be as seamless as the fade to screensaver effect. This is what should happen:
- You click on shut down

- If there is a unsaved file open, then

-Show a notice explaining this at the corner of the screen have a button on the notice to "Force Quit" the program. (Guifications esque) Use Compiz, if enabled, to focus that app, but have everything else darkened, sort of like the Alt-Tab effect. Then the users saves and closes, and the shutdown process continues. (Notice that no apps have actually started being turned off yet)

- If another user is logged in, and that user has unsaved files, then:

- Show a notice window stating what the problem is. The window should have two options: "Switch to the other account to save files" and "Force Quit the applications"

- If the first option is chosen, then present a password box, which will accept either an administrative password or the users password. Once the user has entered one of the correct passwords, fade to the other account, and do the same window focus effect described previously. After that, continue the shutdown process.

- If the second option is chosen, ask for either the user or administrative password, and then terminate the programs. Then continue.

- Show a black screen with a spinner. (like the firefox progress spinner) while processes are being shut down.

- use compiz, if enabled, (It hasn't been shut down yet) to fade the transition to the usplash. Shut down all remaining processes (The processes compiz needs to run) and finally shut down the computer.

As you can see, this proposition is clearly better than the current one. I'm not sure if this can be implemented, but Mac OSX can do it, so why can't we? I know about the similar ideas, but a search didn't turn up something that proposes what I do. The other ideas make up this more consolidated idea.

Less screensavers
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!

WHAT THE HELL!

Who need that amount of screensavers?

I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?

Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

The "Get Ubuntu" page should have a link to purchase Ubuntu pre-installed on machines. It should list System76 and Dell as international providers, and then provide a localized list below that. This will encourage computer buyers to purchase computers with Ubuntu pre-installed and help those already looking for this.

At least link to the wiki page:

GNOME QT integration

While the situation could be (and has been) worse, QT applications do not look wholly integrated into GNOME. This is probably hard to pull off, but a general Human or GNOME-like skin for QT applications would do a lot (the other way around, GTK apps with QT style, already is supported)

edit : This may be fixed with GtkStyle

More native ogg support
Written by browndog the 31 Jul 08 at 09:01. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If I want to change a system sound, or a mail notification sound in Evolution I have to use a WAV file. While this is no great problem it would be nice if I could also use ogg files as many of the sounds on gnome-look.org are provided in ogg format. In order to use them I have to convert them to WAV with audacity.

They use the red hat liberation fonts by default and OMG It looks amazing.

The default ubuntu fonts are painful to look at once you know how good it can look.

Different wallpapers on different monitors/workspace
Written by greycode the 28 Feb 08 at 17:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
I've got two monitors, and right now if I use the wallpaper settings in gnome it stretches the wallpaper across the two monitors. It does this even for the default ubuntu wallpaper. This can look really bad depending on the image. In order to get around this I had to get two wallpaper images and join them into one large one with the GIMP and set that as my wallpaper.

There should be a way in gnome to set a different wallpaper for each monitor.

==== Merged with ideas of a similar scope: Different wallpapers on different workspace ===

Many workspaces option in Linux allows you to separate your work, why not allow users to have different wallpapers on each workspace. This allows for easier identification of which workspace you are on.
When used with compiz-fusion you can rapidly switch between your workspaces and the different wallapaper will allow you to quickly recognise what desktop you are on.

Currently this is natively available in KDE but not in Gnome. In Gnome you can't even let Compiz take over the wallpaper control because Nautilus doesn't allow for transparent backgrounds.

Other solutions like Wallpapoz are slow and when switching between desktops it takes too long to switch WP.

LiveUSB
Written by Taku the 28 Feb 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.

It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.

The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.

Developer comments
This was implemented by two separate projects! Both Usb-creator (see the blueprint) and Usblive (see its website) allow you to build a live USB system on Intrepid.
The first one is available on the repository, and usblive in this PPA.

Ubuntu uses a known bad NTFS-3g driver in it's repositories.
Please keep Ubuntu up to date, since this might (and does) cause data loss, especially on mobile, NTFS formatted hard drives.

Here's a link to ntfs-3g forum thread that verifies this

The bug about which you talk has been fixed in Hardy (LP Bug #229000). Further, this is not the right place for new version requests.

Browsing a document in OpenOffice is not changing it
Written by azimout the 22 May 08 at 15:00. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I open a document with OpenOffice (e.g. a .ppt presentation), I browse through it and decide it's not the one I was looking for. When I close it, OpenOffice will ask me if I want to save or dismiss the changes. If you open 5-6 documents like this, it can be quite annoying...

OpenOffice should ignore the fact that I'm closing the document at a different page than the one it opened to...

Please push this idea upstream to the OOo developers...

Always show "safe to remove"
Written by pi314 the 22 May 08 at 15:51. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you unmount an usb flash memory or a memory card, sometimes you can read "Device safe to remove", but sometimes nothing happens (I think that the message is only shown when it was copying).
I think it would be nice to always show "Safe to remove".

Thanks

Complex number support int Ubuntu Calculator
Written by nazgand the 26 Apr 08 at 02:36. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At this time, The Ubuntu Calculator cannot even take the logarithms of negative numbers.

The rule for logarithms of the form M∡𝜃 is this:
Ln(M∡𝜃)=Ln(M)+𝑖𝜃

The calculator should support complex numbers in cartesian and polar form.

Also, the calculator is currently unable to calculate the factorials of non integers. Please fix this with Euler's Gamma Function.

ADD BITTORRENT OPTION ON THE MAIN DOWNLOAD PAGE!

The Novell guys took the lead already: http://software.opensuse.org/

When Hardy Heron was released, the Ubuntu servers became overloaded with thousands of people trying to download it. Downloading rates of repositories and updates were so slow that some people had to leave the computer on at night only to find connection errors the next morning.

However, if Canonical had promoted the BitTorrent downloads, this wouldn't have happened. Everyone would have got a copy of Ubuntu without slowing the repository servers and producing a Denial-of-Service effect.

Moreover, BitTorrent has many advantages over direct downloads. For instance, the more people downloading at the same time, the more sources and lesser the wait. In addition, it ensures file integrity because it uses hash functions, that is, files cannot be corrupted (modified). Not to mention that transfers can be resumed if the connection is broken.

Therefore, BitTorrent downloading should be included in the Get Ubuntu page ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) with a succinct but clear explanation on how to use them.

The fact that this idea hasn't been implemented --despite all the votes in favour-- clearly shows a neglect and reluctance from Canonical decision-makers to do what is best for the community. The worst thing is that they aren't giving an explanation. I hope good ideas in this site don't come to die here in a puzzle of bureaucracy :(

The reason Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution is because developers listen to people. Let's keep that "humanity towards others" alive.

We do actually have a BitTorrent tracker and support BitTorrent downloads; you can see the .torrent files on releases.ubuntu.com, and every release features people eager to provide seeding.

I think the reason the torrents aren't prominent on getubuntu/download is that there are a lot of problems with the server-side tracker software; particularly around release time, it has to be restarted manually rather a lot as new files are made available, taking ages to reinitialise each time, and this makes our sysadmins unhappy. Our webmaster also wants the download page to be as simple as possible, and each option does add a level of complexity to the process.

That said, BitTorrent certainly can help to scale back server load (although so can using mirrors other than Canonical's - there's a reason there's a period before release when the images are available on our servers but we ask people to restrain themselves from posting links to them, and that's to give mirrors a chance to fetch the images first).

On 3 June, our webmaster added a note to the bottom of http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download on how to retrieve images by BitTorrent, which I believe was in response to this item. This ultimately takes you through to the releases.ubuntu.com page from which you can get the .torrent files.

Bearing in mind some of the constraints involved that lead to something of a compromise, I'm interested in whether that resolves this item.

Make Ubuntu perfect and run on all computer
Written by yekcim the 26 Apr 08 at 18:59. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The title is an example of idea i think Brainstorm have to hide : Some ideas are too logical.

Examples :
- Add software 2.0 and not software 1.9
- Support acpi
- Speed Up boot time
- Better wi-fi support
- ...

In fact, these ideas are good ideas and everyone will vote for. But little ideas but good ideas are hidden because can't obtain same scores.

We can vote "for" or "against" an idea. We could clic on a "too logical" button and if "too logical" have a important score we hide this ideas. A visitor could watch all ideas, but by defaut done and "too logical" should be hides.
