Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

This is being worked on in upstream GNOME: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48034

HD Video - GPU acceleration
Written by X-MATRIX the 21 Aug 08 at 09:38. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Processing of HD-Video (Playback) should done by GPU to reduce CPU Usage. On older Systems a HD-Video Playback isn't possible under Linux.

Wine could import real Windows files from an original Win CD/DVD
Written by XVIIarcano the 31 Aug 08 at 15:30. Category: System. Related to: Wine. New
This might be a stroke of genius or an utter idiocy, you judge.

I seem to understand that the major shortcomings of wine are with the dlls because not all the libraries are emulated and not all are emulated seamlessly (no guilt whatsoever, I realize that the wine guys are doing their best).

So here is the idea.
When installing wine, or from the libraries configuration menu at a later time, there could be an "import original libraries" option, I choose it and I supply an original Windows cd/dvd that I have lying around (we probably all have a couple, even if we just use them as glass coasters).
Then wine runs trough the cd, borrows what it needs to run smooth with direcx and everything else and configures itself.
Final step, playing that damn brand new game or that damn cad application we need so desperately.

It would not exactly be the ideal solution to bug #1 but for somebody it would be way better than dual-booting.

Like it?

P.S. I do not even know if this would be completely legal, if not perhaps it could be implemented as a separate script.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts

Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)

SYNAPTIC DOWNLOADS ( PAUSE,RESUME)
Written by blaz_boy the 25 Aug 08 at 00:53. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
i use synaptic as a front end for apt-get but there is an important thing synaptic don't have it's pausing the download and then resuming it ... in such cases :

1- i was downloading 100MB and my bandwidth is too low (6Kb/s) then it'll be downloaded in 5 hours , the electricity has been cutoff and the pc is off then i have to download it from the start

2- the user downloading large package and he used accidentally the sudo poweroff command then synaptic here starts over from the start of the downloads and ignore all the progress it made

3- the user want for any reason to pause the downloads of the applications , maybe he needs internet bandwidth for now and will resume the download later ... then now he can't do it

4. Download Packages and install them later : User want to download Packages now , but should for any reason leave fast the PC and shutdown it , and by the next Start user want to install the Packages.

but if the SYNAPTIC do that it'll be a very useful thing

Ubuntu currently doesn't upgrade the kernel, it just keeps adding newer and newer kernels to the system.

Currently, the list of kernels installed on a Ubuntu system grows over time. This takes up additional disk space and adds clutter to the boot loader.

Ideally, older kernels should be removed automatically.

Maybe leave current and current-1, but not _all_ of them...

Password asking when you move/copy files to protected folder
Written by gio91ber the 10 Apr 08 at 17:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Mac OS X when you try to copy/move a file in a protected folder appears a pop-up that asks you to insert admin password.

In Ubuntu the same thing become very difficult, especilly copying multiple files: you have to access to the terminal and write a command. This could be really stressing for a new user.

Could you implement the same function seen on Mac?

"Administrator mode" for Dolphin/Nautilus
Written by droetker the 20 Jul 08 at 12:00. Category: System. Related to: Dolphin. New
ATM it is very uneasy to edit system files as root with a GUI.
E.g. if you want to edit files in /etc, /boot/ etc... you have to go to the console, get root and edit the files either with nanno or with "sudo gedit" (GNOME) or "sudo kate" (KDE).

It would be a good idea to integrate a "Administrator mode" button or something like this with policykit backend into nautilus/dolphin.

I think for nautilus is something lika that underways, but for dolphin not.
To access root-only directories a question while entering the dir would be ok, but for editing files e.g this is not enough.

Other solution would be - every time I don't have the rights to do something (save /etc/samba/smb.conf e.g.) the systema asks me for the password.

Include "Screens and Graphics" in [System]-[Preferences] menu   forum
Written by ahickey the 8 Aug 08 at 11:42. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Having 'Screens and Graphics' in the menu will make it easier for people with unsupported montior/graphics card setups to more easily get their correct resolution set up. It has good generic options and a very extensive list of actual monitors.

I installed Feisty, Gutsy and Hardy and in each case it came up with a resolution of 800x600 by default eventhough my display is LCD and supports 1280x1024

I ended up hacking xorg.conf to fix the problem. Then I saw in the forum that 'Screens and Graphics' is available in the Applications menu if you add it. I have also seen in the forum that this mainly affects new users who may not be comfortable editing config files or even understand what they have to do.

By having 'Screens and Graphics' in the Preferences menu I expect more people will be able to fix their display resolution problems on their own.

ndiswrapper
Written by elmoj the 8 Aug 08 at 00:06. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the most annoying thinks to my migration from windows to linux was the usr5421 usb wifi installation. I know all the stories about the drivers... it doesn't matter, but I think:

1.- Ndiswrapper must be included by default (as other ideas says)

2.- The Wifi driver installation MUST be easy (or with a device manager, detect the device, ask for drivers and if don't have it, ask for ndiswrapper solution)

3.- Please (I don't know if it's always, cause my experience is not so big), don't want to modify manually files to do an automatic wifi support to start using it.

In my case I have to modify a 25-rules-etc.... with a big, large and strange command line) to get it working since I get login in the system.

Please think about it. The users want to have an easy system and this get hard to migrate from windows...

Thanks a lot. I hope I explain my idea succesfully but my english is from spain... :P
