Prompt user to enable automatic security updates

We should prompt the user as part of the Ubiquity installer and ask him/her whether they wish to enable automatic security updates or not.
Currently, Ubuntu, and Linux in general, have few real viruses in the wild.
This will change with time, as all systems, no matter how well designed, cannot be made perfect.
When problems are found and fixed in Ubuntu's security, they are signed and released into the repositories.
Currently, the default is to not update automatically. This makes sense, as we shouldn't do such things without a user's permission. However, many users are not aware of security updates, and do not know that the update process can be automated, as the option is hidden away in Sys>Admin>SoftwareSources.
Prompting would allow the user to better protect himself, and the user would be able to choose from
* No automatic
* Download and notify
* Download and install
The system will not reboot without the users permission, no matter what the user chooses.
Non-security updates should _never_ be automated, and should require user intervention (this is the current behavior).

Ubuntu needs more promotion...

U know what? When Apple decided to release the OS X Leopard, they created a great promotion... Even I decided to buy a mac because of it's magnificent ads... (U know the mac ads with Justing Long in it..) It makes me want to use the OS...
It didn't stop at just that... After I bought the apple, they frequently (weekly) created a podcast of how to tricks.... How to use the system to it's greatest potential...
I think the ubuntu - Linux community can also do that... Create podcast or a web page with frequent tips and tricks of using ubuntu... Promote that it's easy to use ubuntu... promote that ubuntu is somehow better to use than windows or even mac... Make people believe that ubuntu Linux is simple... How can we make people switch from Windows or Mac if we didn't promote the system in an intuitive way...
After all, ubuntu is Linux for Human Being right? Show it to them... Show and spread this ubuntu way to others...

Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.
I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.
There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.
What do ya'll think?

Center right-click context menu under mouse instead of two the right.

Users almost always move the mouse toward
the center of a menu before continuing. This is a strategy in menu browsing,
and eliminating the need for it could subconsciously make the interface feel
more usable. Why not center menus under the mouse rather than the traditional
method of drawing it right of the mouse? The one exception for this of
course, would be if centering a menu under a mouse would interfere with the
visibility of the menu.

Brainstorm: Restrict idea submission

Currently anyone can post ideas on Brainstorm and unfortunately some *useless* ideas clutter the view for voters and sometimes get high ranking.
For example some ideas about miscellaneous things(such as replacing the Example folder, show network transfer speed and others) have more votes than other ideas which are concerned with the usability/compatibility/etc of Ubuntu.
one way to fix this is to add some restrictions on posting ideas(not anyone can post, only people with certain *credibility*), I feel that people need guidance on when to promote or demote an idea.
May be one solution is to publish a list of possible future enhancements and bug fixes(by Cannonical) then users can vote on those.

Intergration with Suprasphere

SupraSphere should become a key piece of Ubuntu because it has key conceptual attributes that will allow Linux to innovate and leapfrog other approaches. These attributes are these four general areas: services-oriented desktop (web os/desktop), end-to-end security, database filesystem, and virtualization.
Because no one knows what it is yet, here's a summary: it's a universal remote for personal data in the cloud. you can host all of your data in one place on one server, access it securely, and share it as you wish. It incopretates multiple message types including threaded IM, bookmarks, email, and rss feeds, as well as a full mozilla based browser.

Pidgin should have a Send button in message windows

I know it's easy as hell to just hit enter to send a message, but sometimes I'm using hotkeys or something that makes it easier and more convenient to be able to grab my mouse and click on a Send button. But there isn't such a button in Pidgin message windows, so I keep finding myself reaching for the mouse then having to go back to the keyboard just to hit Enter. It may be a small thing to have a button, and not probably everyone wants one, but I'd love to be able to have the button to use or not use.

Better info for Ubuntu Desktop Edition
|
|
Written by zerng07 the 24 Mar 08 at 11:23. Category: Brainstorm.
Related to: ubuntu.com.

I think that the info of Ubuntu Desktop Edition( http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition )is not attractive for newbies, because the info there is quite nothing!
For example, "Desktop simplicity". Have you ever seen a complicated desktop by default install?
And " Ubuntu 'Just Works'". It is not the point! An operation system just should work! What we care about is HOE GREAT it works! So,it should be changed as "Ubuntu 'Works Amazingly'!" or something like that.
Then "Quick and easy updates". Which modern OS can't do that nowadays? As far as I am concerned, all the OSes on the market can do this. That's not attractive at all! The point is EVERY SOFTWARE you have installed from our repos can be upgraded easily with few clicks.
We should renew it!
In my opinion, the idea one is like the page of Apple, Get a Mac( http://www.apple.com/getamac/ ). It is more clear, appealing and interesting!
For example, "You can make amazing stuff." or "Still the most advanced OS" etc. is quite attractive, isn't it?
Furthermore, Security and the choices of Freedom are the the most powerful weapon of Ubuntu. We can put more emphasis on describing that.

Single click option should affect entire system

First of all, this is not quite a dupe of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/39/
it is close, however.
I would like to see the "Single click to open items" option in Nautilus affect the entire system (open file dialogs especially, some thing in Java, if possible). As of now, it only works for Nautilus. Perhaps it would be a good idea to put it in the Mouse preferences instead of Nautilus, as then it would affect more than just Nautilus.
This would be especially nice for those of us with tablet PCs, as double clicking with a stylus is difficult at times.

Currently, Ubuntu cannot autorun CDs with Windows software using wine (by clicking 'Run' in the dialog window) when Wine is installed (error occurs). It should be as easy as in Windows. Autorunning Windows CDs should work also in Ubuntu.

Recycling (old) Hardware

Hello, everyone
I've got an idea to recycle hardware somewhere in England or perhaph in other points too and get a reward for it, like when you bring your old cellphone to the
mobile store and get 10 euros for it.
I propose to make a price list
printers $20
scanners $10
...
This way, costumer gets more money to buy new one until someone writes drivers for his old (for example, an unrecognized printer).
Old harware is important too imo.
I just sketched it all up in a big picture, If you like the idea, don't forget to comment.

I think ubuntuforums.org should have better design. Now it is a bit confusing and should be simplified. A new user is disoriented by the large amount of different information and settings.
