I don't want to modify always my ubuntu systems so they send their host name (and their client identifier) to the dhcp server. This is really nasty. Please enable that feature by default. Anyway it doesn't work with network manager 0.7. Workaround: manually set your MAC as Client ID in NM.

VirtualBox Networking Too Difficult to Setup
Written by muecker the 20 Jun 08 at 15:58. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I recently tried to set up a VirtualBox VM. One of the primary reasons for creating the VM is to connect to remote systems via Windows networking protocols (MS VPN, Cisco, Citrix, Nortel, etc.). I already have a VMWare VM but I wanted to use VirtualBox because it is better supported in Ubuntu.

I immediately ran into issues with the default NAT network and tried to set up bridged networking. I broke the networking on my host machine and spent a couple of hours without being able to hit any remote networks. I finally was able to back out the changes and get it to work again. Since then I have all but abandoned the VirtualBox VM I set up.

VirtualBox should be as easy or easier to setup than VMware is to setup. There I specify to create a bridged network when I install it and I can switch between bridged, NAT and host only networking while the VM is running. Even that could be easier because I have to run a command line script to create the network the first time and I have yet to make it work with wireless.

MAPI support to support Exchange 2003/2007

I think one of the biggest showstoppers for Ubuntu is the lack of support for Exchange 2007. As much as I hate it, I'm forced to use it at work. Today I have to use Outlook 2003 in VirtualBox/XP to work around the problem.

There is an ongoing project to add MAPI support to Evolution which would remedy the problem but the development isn't going that fast and doesn't seem to be a priority.

Microsoft Exchange 2007 was released late 2006 but still we have no support in Evolution/Ubuntu.

Need better support for printing graphics   forum
Written by muecker the 20 Jun 08 at 14:52. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess I'm just old school, I occasionally like to print photos to put on my wall either at work or at home. Recently I tried to do that in Ubuntu and ran into all kinds of problems. F-Spot doesn't support setting the paper size so you end up printing full-size to your printer. That doesn't work at all when I specify the photo tray on my printer. The version of Gimp in Hardy seems like it might do the job but I need to try it again.

Other things I would like to be able to do with photo printing is print multiple photos per page, either the same photo or different photos so I don't waste paper printing a 5x7 on a full-size sheet.

I posted this on the forum expecting that it as more of an FAQ than anything and have not received a single response yet so maybe it isn't something that can be done at this time.

Since I don't think many people would be scared of an extra button to configure their selected screensaver, it would be really nice if it could be included (like it is in xscreensaver-settings).

I'm constantly frustrated by applications stealing my focus. There should be some way for me to ensure that when I begin typing somewhere, an overzealous application will never pop up in front of what I'm working on.

If an application needs my attention, it's task bar button should simply pulse so I can turn my attention to it when I'm ready. Pidgin does this; why not everything else?

On Mac OS X, Growl provides a system-wide way to notify the user that something has happened without getting in the way. I'd very much like to see Ubuntu adopt something like that.

I think more Windows users would try out Ubuntu if they could just double click an .exe file instead of going into a command prompt, browsing to the folder and then typing "wine *.exe" to install the program.

I like how Ubuntu adds shortcuts on the desktop and the "start menu" after you install the program making it easy to run but installing Windows software needs to be easier.

An Alarm to user remember about some important events.

Evolution have an alarm, but it is a big and fat program and many people don't like use it just to have a alarm.

I found these Alarm programs:
http://gnomefiles.org/app.php/Alarm+Clock
http://alarm-clock.54.pl/

Maybe other more simple Alarm can be included.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

This is implemented! See the Gnome 2.24 release notes.

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

Possible solutions and further explanation:

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.

Add feature to save installed packages in Synaptic and Adept
Written by k.y the 29 Feb 08 at 15:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A feature to save a list of all the installed packages would be nice. So if you reinstall the system, or upgrade or whatever you could just load that file and Synaptic or Adept install all the packages listed.
I think it's quite a pain to have to search for all the packages everytime I install Ubuntu. A copy of sources.list into that file would also be nice.

How about a "For Windows Users" doc
Written by homerhomer the 5 Mar 08 at 07:02. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The "Examples" should include a How-To for Windows users. I imagine it will cover the basics that most windows users get snagged on and be geared for the average user.

For Examples

Section 1
* A Windows user in Linux Land
* Common application (winzip, Word, Itunes, Internet Explorer)
* How do I defrag? Where is my Anti-Virus?

Section 2
* Setting up a printer
* Connecting to Windows Computers
* Listen to Music and Watching Movies

Section 3
* gaming in Linux
* and so on

Better wi-fi support

More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."
