Desktop Presets

Instead of setting up different users to change the way your desktop works for you (layout/window manager/etc) have the ability to setup presets.
For Example:
When using blender if you use compiz, it advisable to turn it off beforehand and use metacity, in which case, you'll probably want to close cairo dock. By doing so you'll probably want another panel in gnome at the bottom screen to manage windows.
Instead of doing this everytime it would be great to just select the Blender Desktop Preset (created by yourself) and the desktop suddenly changes to exactly how you want it laid out.

For the new theme: Ignore the impossible mockup, use the Dust theme

Everyone by now has seen the world famous mockups of what Ubuntu apparently should look like. The problem is that what is shown in those mockups is not yet possible with the current way gnome works.
I worry with everyone clambering for this mythical theme and with time running out before 8.10 ships, what will end up happening is Ubuntu will ship with the same old problematic brown and orange theme that is so hated by a lot of people.
There is a solution though...
The Dust theme
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/DustTheme
The Dust theme has gotten a lot of praises on Digg and is easily as sexy as anything I've personally seen for Linux (and I'm not usually a fan of dark themes), bust most promising of all... is actually possible with the current technology we have at our disposal.
It's time to be bold! Stop defaulting to the same brown and orange and make a big bold change. Embrace Dust.
Yes you will get a few idiots who will say it's too like Vista just because it's black, but ignore them people. The wider tech community will praise Ubuntu for finally ditching its dorky themes and becoming sophisticated and sexy. New users will be eager to try out this Ubuntu thing they have heard so much about.

Launchpad needs a Wiki unrelated to Ubuntu. When we opened our open source project (ubuntu related, in a way) i was uncertain about being allowed to use Ubuntu wiki to fill one (1) page about the project.
I really think you should provide a wiki to every project in launchpad (maybe with the chance to choose to have an external one).
The rationale is:
- having an own wiki requires hosting. Why use launchpad for bugtracking and buying hosting space just for the wiki ?
- Ubuntu wiki is inherently unrelated for many of the projects.
- Launchpad's blueprints require an external site. This shouldn't be necessary

IPv6 support

I think that we must have a GUI for ipv6 configuration.
Other distributions like Fedora or OpenSUSE, OSX and even MS Vista already have it. IPv4 is dying, ISP's are beginning to distribute IPv6 adresses for 2~3 years and DNS root servers have recently switch to v6 too.
Ubuntu should be ready for the Internet of today and tomorrow and integrate IPv6 (fixed, dhcpv6, RA, ...) in the GNOME 'Network Settings' (and the same in KDE) as soon as possible.

Convince id to support (K/X)Ubuntu and Linux with their upcoming game engine.

Hello,
id, best known for DOOM and QUAKE, has supported linux in the past.
Their upcoming new engine idtech5 will be multi-platform, supporting mac, ps3, windows and xbox360. They stated that this engine will make it possible to use the almost same codebase and compile it for each of the mentioned platforms. The ps3 and mac do not support directx, so this new engine must use opengl, like the former id games did.
They have not mentioned linux, so it is not clear if it will be supported.
Dear Ubuntu, Canonical and Mr Shuttleworth,
please appeal to id and ask them to support linux and (K/X)Ubuntu. Support them, if this becomes necessary (i.e. Linux binary through apt/synaptic). Make the ubuntu desktop a richer experience for all kinds of pc users.
Bye, Martin

There has been a lot of positive talk in the past about replacing Pidgin with a better client that uses Telepathy but now there's one that looks like it's almost ready to do that! Empathy ( http://live.gnome.org/Empathy ) has much more potential than Pidgin since Empathy uses Telepathy ( http://telepathy.freedesktop.org ). Although i don't think Empathy is quite ready for this in Intrepid, it certainly will be for the next release.
(If you'd like to give it a try, don't use the old version in the Hardy repos, look here: http://cass.no-ip.com/~cassidy/blog/index.php/post/2008/04/14/Voice-and-video-c alls-with-Empathy )
The fact that Empathy uses Telepathy to manage all the different protocols it supports is what makes it so great. Why is it that Pidgin supports file transfers on AIM but not Jabber? Why can't i use VoIP to talk to my Google Talk friends in Pidgin?
Empathy will enable more desktop integration, better support for multiple protocols, and a happier user :)
The bottom line is that Empathy has been making much more progress and improving much faster than Pidgin thanks to Telepathy and including it in Ubuntu will only help the process along!
Major Update! Empathy is now part of Gnome-- http://blog.ibeentoubuntu.com/2008/08/gnome-has-empathy-for-you.html

add ctrl_alt_esc to kill a window app

Please offer the ability to kill a window app with the key combination ctrl_alt_esc. I was a long time kde user (before I "discovered" Ubuntu Hardy) which has this key combination in the default config, and often ctrl_alt_esc came in my help when X hanged by a window app and we couldn't launch a terminal emulator or switched to a terminal console (to kill the app). In this scenario ctrl_alt_esc should show an icon (in kde appears a black skull) that, placed over the blocked window app, kills it after pressing left mouse key.
If you think that ctrl_alt_esc in the default config could be "dangerous" please add the ability to insert a similar shortcut in Keyboard shortcuts tool (system -> preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts)

I'd like to see some improvements in dragging support:
* Allow alt-tab (switch active window) while dragging
* Allow drag an attachment from Thunderbird to nautilus
* Allow drag files from Archive manager to nautilus
* Allow drag a picture from nautilus into Open Office
* Focus/raise a window on drop (mouse-up) instead of drag (mouse-down)
* Make it easier to drop files in a full nautilus window to copy/move (for example: popup drop target in bottom while dragging)

Logical per-language dead keys (itś hard enough to type ÿes" as it is...)

The current dead keys setup allows any combination of dead keys. In the Other OS (tm) each language has specific dead keys that work, only those that are required for the language. I can easily remember the few cases where I have to type a space after a double quote, for instance, in the Other OS (tm). However, I constantly find myself having to correct myself with things like
itś
ÿes sir!"
I'm (have to type a space after the ' or it won't appear!)
I simply want the dead keys to only do anything for the characters that are logical, and to behave as if theyŕe not there for any other characters. Dutch would allow ' with any vowel, " with any vowel, ` with any vowel, and ^ with any vowel, and thatś pretty much it.

I myself have my icons centered on the panel and I expect many other people have too. It's a lot of work keeping them that way as you add new icons and remove old icons. I suggest 2 new features
a center icons tickbox
a slider to control the distance between icons
This would be very easy to implement.

Cinepaint is a great program, it was even used in some popular "hollywood" movies! But it is not available in ubuntu at the moment... would be nice if it were added to the repositories...
[edit] I even tried to compile it... but I'm no expert, and even folowing the instructions to compile software it gave me a bunch of errors and didin't worked out...

Windows selectors to be same in all workspaces

I love working in different workspaces but there is one thing that should be fixed. First you start ie Firefix in workspace 1 and then a second program, ie Rythmbox, and send it over to workspace 2.
Then you will have both programs still listed in the windows selector list in workspace 1. This is very convenient and if I click on Rythmbox, in order to change a song or so, I will automatically be transfered to workspace 2. However, in workspace 2 there is only Rythmbox in the windows selector which means I can not just as conveniently switch back to workspace 1 again.
Why?

Is it possible to have 2D effects for GNOME like OpenGEU.
OpenGEU uses enlightenment desktop. Cool and Superb effects in menus and wallpapers. All this is 2D.
It will be great if something like this can be for GNOME without the need of full blown compositing.

It would be interesting to add an option to choose between the typical virtual desks and a new cyclic desktop, rendered by compiz fusion, may choose the length.
It's better to understand the concept in the main image:

Already it is a little eye-candy but as option would be great!.

Ubuntu should develop it's own open source game development libraries. This could push for a unified way to develop games on Linux platforms. Fast ANSI C libs that don't act as an engine, but rather as a easy way to gain access to the systems hardware from languages like python,c++,java... Why should Windows attract all the game developers. If a standardized library is developed for Linux it would certainly make anyone Question the need to use Directx.

totem movie player should keep aspect ratio

it would be good to have a option to keep the aspect ratio of the playing movie when changing the size of the window.
by now (feisty for me) there is the option to resize to 1:2 1:1 2:1 and to set the aspect ratio but none which says "keep aspect ratio".
This should work for any aspect ratio the movie file comes with, just keep it.
