Dual Head: Use keyboard to move active window between screens

This is something for dual head Gnome (and KDE I guess) users.
There is a freeware app for Windows (MultiMon Taskbar) that enables moving active window between screens using Ctrl+Alt+left (or right) arrow key. Absolutely brilliant and I miss it every time I boot Ubuntu/Gnome.
AFAIK there is no similar function available in Gnome, you can move windows between desktops, but not between screens on the same desktop. You can "walk" windows between screens with Alt+F7, but I want to "jump" windows between screens.

Cursor should become invisible when one starts typing

I think this is a very useful usability improvement. When I highlight a particular field and start typing in it, I don't want the mouse cursor blocking my view. It would be really nifty if the cursor just became invisible for the period of time that the keyboard is being used.

brainstorm: Hating other users

Won't implement
|
|
Give users the ability "hate" other users. When you "hate" another user, you automatically vote against anything posted by that user.
I think that allowing users to "love" other users would mean encouraging the creation of fictitious accounts that automatically support each other, so I am not suggesting it.
Developer comments
Let's not do this. Instead we'll add a 'report spam' button and repeat offenders posting spam or abuse will be visible there and can be banned by admins.

Seriously. This shows you how scared people are of Linux rising in popularity. When someone resorts to vandalizing a website, they have to be pretty upset.

Create Simple Wireless Mesh Networking Software

This is what's being used in the OLPC's, which allow small villages to essentially build their own wireless mesh networking infrastructure that works and shares traffic overhead (IEEE 802.11s). You could imagine having a little utility on your Ubuntu PC that would scan for such wireless mesh networks, allow you to connect, act as a server/client node, share files, chat, and the sky is pretty much the limit from there. People could begin hosting their own webpages from their PC for free, using nothing but radio waves.
If you utilize the bandwidth and full-duplex potential of 802.11n wireless networking, you could create large decentralized mesh networks that could be very fast, much faster than cable Internet access.

Switch my Monitor from Landscape mode to Portrait mode on the fly.

I would like to switch my Monitor from Landscape mode to Portrait mode on the fly. Say by right clicking on the desktop like I do in MS Windows at this time.
In any of the Linux's, I have to edit the xorg.conf file to make this change and it's not on the fly.
Thanks

Post-install windows migration

Whilst it's possible to use the "migration" tool in Ubiquity (the live installer for ubuntu) during the installation to migrate settings over, there seems to be no way to do this _after_ the system has been installed.
It should be possible to pick the migration functionality out of Ubiquity and make it a standalone application which a user could run over and over (as necessary) to migrate the current setup on their Windows partition into their Ubuntu partition.
A further useful feature would be a "delete windows" option which makes it easier for people to fully migrate from Windows. It should find the Windows partitions and (after confirmation/checking) delete them, reformat them and add them to Ubuntus storage. Either via LVM, or by massaging the partitions, or even adding the space under some mount point.

I love the fact that I can plug into my already-existing scanner and start scanning. What I don't like is the lack of OCR capability to convert text images to text data. From the support forums I understand that there are OCR possibilities out there on the internet, but for someone who is not a programmer, they are not usable at all.
(Also, for whatever reason, the XSane program is no longer working since my upgrade to Feisty Fawn.)

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.
Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Most business laptops and some of the end user ones too now include a fingerprint reader.
Those are perfectly possible to use on Linux either by using thinkfinger (IBM/Lenovo) or fprint (HP).
The various PAM modules for those should be installed by default or at least be easily installable and integrate correctly in the default desktop.
GDM, gksudo and the gnome screensaver would have to be modified in order to correctly support fingerprint readers.
That way the user would be able to login either by entering is password as usual or using his fingerprint.

Pidgin is a good program to chat on all protocols, but a webcam plugin is still missing.
The developers aren't decided to code webcam support, but having this in Pidgin is very needed.
Or why not code this plugin for emesene? But you can only use the MSN protocol at the moment!

Bluetooth support is still a mixed bag in ubuntu. Ubuntu needs to do a better job of making sure bluetooth devices work with the operating system. Headsets are still an arcane science and Nautilus still can't browse a BT device.

Easy way of backing up/moving your documents and settings

At the moment, if someone wants to backup his documents or prepare a migration from a computer to another there isn't much more than file-roller to create a backup.
Ideally, the user should be able to run a graphic software which would ask what the user wants to backup and where (tape/usb key/remote).
Then the same tool would be able to restore the backup.
It would be useful for both backups and migration from a computer to another.

In many cases, I can't configure my webcam or I have problems with the microphone. Now I can use my webcam but only with V4L2 and only 3 programas detect my webcam. It's a good idea can use my webcam in all programs as camorama.
Developer comments
That's pure driver issue in the first place. A big plus is to recommend UVC-based webcams to users, since it takes a lot of work off the shoulders of driver-developers. On the
integration-side proper support for v4l/v4l2 in webcam-related applications needs to be solidified. The ideal application to polish up is cheese of course.
