Ubuntu speed ups
Written by lowen the 10 Nov 08 at 16:51. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
There are many things that can speed up Ubuntu . Such as Gnome menu speedup , sawppiness and others that I probably havn't heard of . It would be nice to have an entry in synaptic or somewhere that would optimize Ubuntu for speed . That way it would just be a couple of clicks to get the speed that a lot of people want , but they are not experienced enough to use a terminal to get it .

Choose which network to recieve internet from
Written by Squichie the 22 Oct 08 at 05:59. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
On my laptop, I am always connected to two networks:
> A Wired Network where I host a fileserver, where 2 other macs are accessing my files.
> A Wireless connection to which I use to connect to the internet

I can have both of them connected at the same time (in Intrepid), however, if I am connected to the wired network, I can no longer access or surf the Internet, presumably because the computer is trying to receive the Internet off the wired network, to which has none.
This is a big headache for me, because whenever I need to surf the Internet, I have to disconnect my wired connection, which of course causes heck for the computers connected to my file server.
I think a prompt should be presented when the computer is connected to 2 or more networks, asking which it should receive its internet from. Either that, or have it auto detect which network has the internet.

In the meantime, could someone help me out with this. Networking with macs is painful enough, without having to do it over and over again.

Add an easy option to crop video in totem
Written by amrhassan the 22 Oct 08 at 16:25. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
Like in vlc, an option in the drop down menu to zoom in the video to change it's aspect ratio by cropping off the sides.

It's very handy if you're watching a widescreen movie on a 3:4 screen.

blur (reducing contrast) of the background of a transparent object
Written by yzarc the 12 Oct 08 at 19:49. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
transparent objects are very nice and it's always present in mockups end new themes. Unfortunately, when we are using transparency, the text in the foreground is often messed with the background(part that would be hidden if the actual element was not transparent). Sometime it's impossible to understand what there is.
it can be solved by reducing the contrast or blurring the background (only under the transparent part). my suggestion is include wherever the transparency is used the option to blur the background on compiz. even more sophisticated effects can be taken to blur.

Have lots of color schemes based upon the Human theme
Written by maybeway36 the 24 Sep 08 at 19:22. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Right now, the Human theme comes in brown only, unless you customize it. But what if there were several color schemes, like sky blue or red? Try changing the GTK theme to Clearlooks while keeping the Human window decorations:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5325/skyyy1.png
I propose making alternate GNOME themes for Human in different colors, with GTK engines and icon sets (and maybe even wallpaper) to match.

Samba shares limited to IP/MAC
Written by Auzy the 20 Sep 08 at 00:46. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It should be possible to limit some samba shares to specific IP's or MAC address only.

This would add an extra layer of protection, as we could then automatically prevent the samba port being open at all to people who shouldn't be able to access the shares.

An example where this might help is going is if someone does something dumb like connect an unprotected Wireless access point to the network (and yes, I have seen this done on a enterprise network before). Samba might contain a flaw that allows root access. However, if only 1 IP should be able to access the share anyway, you could possibly lock the ARP entry on the router (never did a CCNA, so not sure if you can bind it to a port too), and this would make a secure connection. Samba would also appear invisible to everyone else, so even if it had a security flaw, an outsider could not break it.

Empty root trash
Written by gaspard.leon the 6 Apr 08 at 22:48. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I just discovered that the folder /root/.Trash contains everything I ever deleted while using a root nautilus window to manage root-owned folders...

Suffice to say it wasn't empty... ;)

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-empty-root-trash.html

Perhaps with all the "Better trash bin" type ideas, this might have already been mentioned...

We need a button or link next to the empty trash button that says something like "Empty root trash" or even "View root trash" with a gksu prompt when pressed...

Or, this could be integrated into some sort of "Disk Cleanup" program.

When listening music, disable mouse-over preiew.
Written by vojvodic the 27 Aug 08 at 19:33. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
When music player is working, preview on mouse-over of mp3 files should be disabled. Lets say, you open folder with mp3 files. Clicking on some of the files will open song and play it in Totem (or some player), but when you move your cursor over some other mp3 file is starts playing that song along with the first one. Then you get one annoying sound.

put Brainstrom Ideas on your blog !
Written by medya the 10 Sep 08 at 08:47. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think there should be a way that you can easily put your Favorite Brainstorm ideas on your blog or in your forum signature , so more people come and vote for "the ideas" if they also like that.

perhaps you can make a RSS version of Bookmarked Ideas of each user.

Make Ubuntu T-Shirts collectables
Written by softsaurus the 1 Sep 08 at 07:09. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Hardy Heron T-shirts were absolutely fabulous!

I really think the T-shirts could be produced as sort of a collectable (or series) of shirts, releasing quality shirts upon every release and make it have a sort of "gotta catch em all" spin to it.

You could compare it to Hard-Rock Café wich has collectable shirts from every single HC around the world. Some people made a real sport out of getting their hands on all of those. Thus spreading the word on Hard-Rock Café (almost like a viral marketing campaign).

Ubuntu could do the same if they keep up the quality of the Hardy shirt (please no more stretched out monkeys guys :P).

Hope you like the idea!

Make ubuntuhcl.org easier to find for people looking for hardware
Written by airplanesrule the 24 Aug 08 at 22:31. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that there should be an easy-to-find link to either https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/ or http://www.ubuntuhcl.org on the ubuntu website (or somewhere easy to find) so people can find out what hardware is easy to setup, or requires no setup easily before they buy

Right click menus as pie menus instead of drop down menus   forum
Written by g2bandrew the 18 Aug 08 at 18:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You know how games like the sims 2 have pie menus? If you don't, here's some pictures:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c237/syberspunk/TS2%20mods/vamprocillindpieme nufix/vamprocillindpiemenufix5edit.jpg

http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/images11/MTS2_506375_mike_1102_PieMenu1.jpg

Now, the subtle (yet vital) difference between ubuntu and the sims 2 is that the sims 2 is a game and ubuntu isn't. Pie menus do appear in other games but i've never seen it outside a game and i think this would work very well in an operating system like ubuntu, especially if they're trying to improve the GUI and make themselves different from windows and mac.

On those pictures, you will see options which have "..." at the end. Thats for those options which, had you been using a dropdown menu, would have an arrow on the end to signify that the option leads to another menu. In the sims 2, it leads to another pie menu. In ubuntu, it leads to another dropdown menu.

So, this idea is a bit different but i think that this could work. Obviously it would have to have a different design to the sims 2 one, possibly having cut, copy and paste icons (amongst others) to help users find the one they want fast.

Magic Folder   forum
Written by bulletprooflama the 8 Jul 08 at 14:22. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
My idea for the Magic Folder is based on a widget for the Windows sidebar: http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=0ed6a06a-6782-41a7-b68c-2753fad4 12a5&pl=1&bt=1

Most users like to keep their desktops as clean as possible. After a while, though, it gets all cluttered up with things that go into different places. Rather than take the time to figure it all out, this little folder saves a lot of time by acting as a virtual dustpan for your desktop and distributing everything wherever you want it to go.

This should be made for Linux. it could sit in a panel just like the Recycle Bin does. The idea has already been discussed here:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=508955

Evolution sync with Google
Written by nelson.blaha the 7 Aug 08 at 23:13. Category: Office. Related to: Evolution Mail and Calendar. New
Google contacts and calendar present an open, non-evil way to store calendar events and contacts in the "cloud" for backup and easy access anywhere. It would be impressive if setting up a gmail account on evolution also synced google calendar and google contacts.

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME
Written by droetker the 25 Mar 08 at 21:19. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo

...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

Resize Many Desktop Icons
Written by dry_carton the 28 Mar 08 at 13:12. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You should be able to resize several icons at the same time in Ubuntu so you can more easily (and faster) get the same custom size on them.

Very very easy way to share files over the internet: Tubes
Written by zoubidoo the 28 Mar 08 at 22:05. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Imagine a folder on your desktop, when you drop a file in it, the file is transmitted to your friend anywhere on the internet. Transfer is asynchronous so if the person is away, then it's postponed until the next time they are online.

The folders are called "Tubes"

Tubes can also be more sophisticated to allow multiple people to be on the receiving end.

The idea is already implemented on Windows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubes_%28software%29
I like the name Tubes and hope it is not trademarked. Actually, I thought of the idea and name before them from pneumatic tubes which I think are a brilliant invention!

Add "Update from Local Network Server" to Adept package sources list

Written by apogee the 4 Mar 08 at 14:18. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have 4 Linux machines on my local network: 2 Kubuntu machines, 1 Xubuntu and 1 UbuntuStudio.

They use packages common to all, and they each have specific packages. When an update is available, I have to download the same update 4 times on a single day. That wastes my bandwidth and reduces my productivity.

Via Google I did locate a page that explained how to set-up a server and link networked machines to first update from the network server, if not found then update from web. But that was incredibly difficult for me to follow (kinda newbie / GUI lover.)

Should any of the networked machines download an update first, it stores it and makes it available for the other machines to update without having to download again.

For instance, when I plug my lap-top into the network in the morning, it updates from the already updated desktop machine first instead of directly from the web.

Once all machines are satisfied that they are properly updated, the .deb files can be marked for removal to free up space again.
