Basket Note Pad or OneNote for Ubuntu (Advanced note-taking)

Ubuntu needs an advanced note-taking software similar to Basket note pads (KDE) or Microsoft OneNote. Such software should be able to conveniently integrate text, urls, graphics, pdfs, etc in an intuitive manner. The available tools in Gnome are text based and have limited flexibility.
There are a lot of posts on forums looking for such software.
I could use the KDE version, but it requires the installation of a whole host of KDE apps which I do not need at all (even to run the other KDE apps that I use).

Nautilus (Mac OS9 Feature) addition

I love this on particular feature of Mac OS 9 and would love to see it in Nautilus:
In OS9 you could take a folder and drag it to the edge of your desktop where the folder would turn into a tab (named with the title of the folder) on the edge of the screen. When you click on the tab the folder would "Slide"(Although the animation is unnecessary) out and allow you to preform normal folder operations. When you clicked on anything other than the popped out folder it would turn back to a tab on the edge of the screen. These tabs could be dragged to any location on the edge of the screen. Even though there are multiple virtual desktops, I believe that this would be useful as long as someone does not drag the folder past the screen edge (which would cause it to drag on the next workspace). I seem to recall that you were even able to color code tabs. I have never encountered a more useful file manager addition as this and would love to see it replicated to make Ubuntu great.
I'm sorry i couldn't find an adequate screenshot of this feature, if u see it please reply with it.

Brainstorm: New selection - "Ideas I have not voted on"
|
|
Written by gazilla the 29 May 08 at 04:38. Category: Brainstorm.

I want to be able to methodically go through each of the Brainstorm ideas and vote on them. I am a recent arrival (to Brainstorm, not Linux), and so there are many ideas I have never seen. Among these are good ideas, bad ideas, and a whole bunch of ideas on which I have no strong opinion either way.
Currently in the "Random Ideas" selection, those ideas I have recorded a vote for are no longer displayed. Despite the large number of ideas now in the system, I have had the same idea crop up several times because I didn't want to vote on it. I wanted to abstain as it concerned a section of the OS that is irrelevant to me.
Another "problem" with Random Ideas is that continuity between ideas is lost. Later ideas often refer back to earlier ideas, modifying and restating a problem (just like this idea does). This is fine if the first idea you see is the "later" idea. The other way around you are only getting part of the picture.
So what I want is this...
1) The ability to record an abstain (zero) vote.
2) A list of ideas I have not voted for, latest first.
In an attempt to fend off the "abstaining does nothing" comments, The only reason I want the abstain vote is to record that fact that I have seen the idea, understand the idea, have made a decision about it, and no longer wish to see it again IN THIS MODE (and perhaps Random Ideas). In other modes (e.g. Latest comments) the idea would still appear, but the voting arrows would be greyed out.
Elements of this idea have been proposed before. I have read each of the ideas below (and all their comments) and believe them all to be related, but probably not true duplicates:

Now when you use the Human theme, you're stuck with brown.
You should be able to pick a color of your own likening so that you can choose blue, green, yellow, white, orange, black, gray, purple, teal, pink or whatever you like.
Check this awesome artwork that I made!

* http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7682/colortheme2ls1.png
* Steel
* Rainbow
From idea #9139 (merged):
Currently the theming is all over the place and changing one place does not affect any other. Although that kind of tweakability is great, most users just want different default colors. (pink, blue, brown, black)
What we should be having:
A: wallpaper - changes every release
B: color-theme - human (easily configurable by user!)
C: splash-canvas - human (we need to create this)
D: gtk-engine - clearlooks with B as default colors
E: kde-engine - oxygen with B as default colors
F: icon-theme - tango with color-filter using B
From these we could generate:

Play startup sound only after ready

After you log in through GDM, the startup sound usually plays before anything else starts, so sometimes you hear the sound even though the desktop is not yet ready i.e. you're still staring at the brown screen and the panels haven't come up yet.
Changing the time that sound is played to right after everything is ready would be a much more useful thing, it would actually indicate when you can use the computer.
From Squiggle in the comments (a much better idea):
Play a loopable sound (8 bar blues, etc) until loading is done then when things are loaded finish with another sound indicating all is ready to go. This is the sort of thing that games do well.

Synaptic should not clear the package search history after modifications

Actually it should not clear that history until told so.
Example: Monday I was tampering with compiz, trying to enable the unofficial and unsupported plugins. I open Synaptic, I serach for "compiz fusion" and I get the list of results. I check and uncheck a couple of things, do other searches and other selections and then I apply.
It all goes well but I do not get the results I hoped for, so I have to go and tamper again with those packets, but the "searched categories" in the left panel were cleared so I have to search them again (and remember what I searched, I know it's stupid, but still...).

Start An Official Ubuntu Online Driver Resource

Have an online resource such as 'drivers.ubuntu.com' where users can submit, vote or comment on drivers that they've used to make their hardware work properly. This would negate having to search through multiple forums to find help on getting a particular compenent to work. You can search for drivers by manufacturer, device type etc, then download and install by following install directions or tips from previous users.
Check http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/drivers/ or driverguide.com or windrivers.com for ideas or examples of how this would work.

Firefox multi-dictionary select

Firefox should be able to select more than one language at same time. This would save the hassle for people that write in multiple languages saving the hassle of having to change it all the time.
By being optional, this feature WOULD NOT affect similar languages since user can simply disable one of the languages selected. A good example that different languages wouldn`t affect each other is that many language are way too different from each other in its alphabet, such as, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Glingon or Elvish.
So if Firefox dictionary finds the word it should be correct cause Japanese characters won`t have similar in Russian and vice versa.
The other case would be to select multiple dictionaries of the same language.

(from http://www.webilder.org/ :) Webilder delivers stunning wallpapers to your Linux desktop, directly from Flickr and Webshots. You choose what keywords (tags) to watch for, and photos are automatically downloaded to your computer. Webilder can also change the wallpaper every few minutes.
The author has released packages for up to feisty fawn, but hasn't provided any for gutsy or hardy. Can this utility be included in the ubuntu repositories.

The CeGCC software available at http://cegcc.sourceforge.net/ is very useful for developing native Pocket PC applications without having to run Microsoft's development software on a Windows Machine. It would be useful to have an ubuntu package available to make installation of this development environment easier.
Upstream, the CeGCC team appear to prefer releasing their packages as i386 (RPM) binaries, as "The sources of CeGCC are also available, but they're big. We believe that those who want to build from source are probably the same people who will want to keep up to date, so they will not mind accessing our SVN source repository"
Given this, it would be especially useful to be able to just apt-get installl cegcc to get everything across easily. At the moment, the easiest option appears to be installing the RPMs using alien (howto here: http://jabasite.ej.am/blog/2007/12/31/installing-cegcc-on-ubuntu/ )

This comes in as a requirement these days for two things. One is when mounting and using windows partitions, viruses could spread. The other is, VirtualBox can run a windows os, hence letting in viruses. F-Prot is a no hassle antivirus, free for single users. Updates regularly too.

An example:
I am using the German ubuntu and if I open the Systemüberwachung (system-monitor), there is no way finding out the name of that program for using it on the command line. It needed some time to find out it is the gnome-system-monitor.
So please just mention the cli-name somewhere, thx.
