I suggest using some orange black tones for kubuntu for a professional look and feel and more ubuntu-ish, so kubuntu wouldn't look like a generic kde distro.

Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.

How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.

Take a close look guys. This could save us time for the bulk tasks we do!!!

Currently one can add/remove to Nautilus Sidebar extra folders as 'places' that users select as current folders or drop files.

Why not provide after the 'places' and extra list with applications so the user can do bulk tasks with just drag and drops files or folders to them.
For example if one wills not to do the default operation of a file of folder(cut/copy/paste) but to do something else, he has to open the appropriate application, do the dragging and dropping there etc.

For instance if someone has selected lets say 10 mp3's and doesn't want to play them in the default mp3 player but wants to burn them to brasero. He has just to drag and drop the selected files to the brasero that is placed in the Sidebar. Imagine the same for pdf's, txt's etc.

Another usability??? What if one wants to not open a file with the default app??? He has to right click on it, select the appropriate app(if it is on the open's with list) , etc.
If the applications list exists in the Sidebar and the right app. is placed there, a drag and drop onto this app. is enough...and effortless.

Sidebar could have by default under the 'places' the most frequent used and/or opened applications and users could add/remove applications like they do with folders to 'places' right now!!!

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

There has been a lot of positive talk in the past about replacing Pidgin with a better client that uses Telepathy but now there's one that looks like it's almost ready to do that! Empathy ( http://live.gnome.org/Empathy ) has much more potential than Pidgin since Empathy uses Telepathy ( http://telepathy.freedesktop.org ). Although i don't think Empathy is quite ready for this in Intrepid, it certainly will be for the next release.

The fact that Empathy uses Telepathy to manage all the different protocols it supports is what makes it so great. Why is it that Pidgin supports file transfers on AIM but not Jabber? Why can't i use VoIP to talk to my Google Talk friends in Pidgin?

Empathy will enable more desktop integration, better support for multiple protocols, and a happier user :)

The bottom line is that Empathy has been making much more progress and improving much faster than Pidgin thanks to Telepathy and including it in Ubuntu will only help the process along!

Everyone by now has seen the world famous mockups of what Ubuntu apparently should look like. The problem is that what is shown in those mockups is not yet possible with the current way gnome works.

I worry with everyone clambering for this mythical theme and with time running out before 8.10 ships, what will end up happening is Ubuntu will ship with the same old problematic brown and orange theme that is so hated by a lot of people.

There is a solution though...

The Dust theme has gotten a lot of praises on Digg and is easily as sexy as anything I've personally seen for Linux (and I'm not usually a fan of dark themes), bust most promising of all... is actually possible with the current technology we have at our disposal.

It's time to be bold! Stop defaulting to the same brown and orange and make a big bold change. Embrace Dust.

Yes you will get a few idiots who will say it's too like Vista just because it's black, but ignore them people. The wider tech community will praise Ubuntu for finally ditching its dorky themes and becoming sophisticated and sexy. New users will be eager to try out this Ubuntu thing they have heard so much about.

Now I know there has been a brainstorm idea suggesting to put Opera 9.5 into the repos but that was before 9.5 was out. At one point Ubuntu had Opera web browser in it's repos I think it was like a year or year and a half ago. But now it's not in the repos...considering Ubuntu 8.04.1 is an LTS it would be nice if this program was added to the repos as I am a web developer and I like to test my site that I code for on all three major rendering engines.

I also know I can just go to Opera's web site and download the program but by adding it to the repos that will eliminate that step. One of the reason I like Ubuntu over Win XP is almost all the programs I use are just click away in Add and Remove, unlike in Windows I have to go the appropriate site and download the .exe file. ;-)

http://www.getdeb.net/ is a very nice website that provides software in .deb packages for ubuntu, it is a very useful thing for many obvious reason, it would be nice if it was officialy supported, or at least, helped by Canonical, and made even better...

I would like to see support for Shoutcast Internet Radio stations added to Rhythmbox.

This is currently my favorite feature in Amarok, Rhythmbox's KDE equivalent. Rhythmbox's Internet Radio selection is rather pathetic in comparison and the current configuration forces me to hunt down the address of and add each of my favorite stations individually, rather than searching the entire station listing internally as with Amarok.

With proper MTP support being added with Hardy, I am finally able to use my MP3 player with Linux again. I have switched back to Rhythmbox, but find myself missing this feature. Perhaps this could be handled in a layout similar to the LastFM plugin?

like today i saw the Dell online shopping and they are still using Ubuntu 7.10 on their computers! Im soon going to buy one and it will just be bothersome to download Ubuntu 8.04!


PS: about 40 more days until i buy my new laptop with Ubuntu! So yea please make this work i know it has been like a day since it cam out but yea!

Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

I think some of the screenshots on www.ubuntu.com are outdated.

For example, the menu screenshot on this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu is not the menu we see in 8.04.

Also, some text is outdated as well. For example, this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/kubuntu says "KDE version 3.5.5 is the current stable release".

There are lots of other examples on the website. I think to use up-to-date screenshots is very important. They would give new users a better and more accurate impression of Ubuntu compared with old screenshots.

I think that is useful to have a calendar/appointments reminder (an electronic agenda) that is a separate program from evolution (like mozilla lightning or google calendar)
that can interact with gnome and alert you when you have appointments, anniversary, etc etc)

The best is can you access it from the clock/calendar gnome applet.

I have several HP laptops and one of those had 7.10 installed and I was able to use compiz. After installing 8.04 beta compiz is no longer working.

Again, on 7.10 it worked. On 8.04 it does not.

The error when I do a compiz --replace is:

Checking for Xgl: not present
Found laptop using ati driver
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

I can't figure out for the life of me why Canonical disabled this. This needs to be addressed before the 8.04 for fear that, with the massive number of bugs in Ubuntu that this will become forgotten. Forgotten just like the fact that using the auto login feature causes the sound engines to set the system in overload with near 100% constant cpu utilization, or that the wireless on most HP presario class notebooks from 2-3 years ago just refuses to work, no matter what, even with ndiswrapper.

So, before these laptop issues become lost forever, please address these new bugs you have are introducing.

It would be a great idea to not disable working features.

Many times I see a new exciting or simple version Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, Etc. out, but I know it will be forever until it shows up in the repositories.. Sometimes until a new version of Ubuntu comes out.

I believe Ubuntu should have a team of people which do not much more than make sure as much of the extra user software is up to date with what's coming out..

So when Firefox beta 5 comes out (say, in the morning) it should likely be in the Repos by the second night if not sooner..

Create a way for users and software creators to contact the team with a simple Instant Message or E-mail stating they have a new update.

Include driver for Creative X-Fi sound cards in restricted drivers repository. It is still beta but many people prefer hardware working with bugs instead of not-working hardware.

The flock web browser (www.flock.com) is a great example of social networking tied into the mozilla backend. photobucket and flickr integration, wordpress blogging, gmail, online bookmark sites, facebook, youtube, and twitter. All in one tightly integrated package.

Having this browser as a standard option in the repos will, in my opinion give a better desktop experience to those interested in that sort of thing.

With the success of digg, facebook, and other social sites, making it easier to use a package like this (rather than going to a place like getdeb) and deploy it will only make our repos better and our platform more fun for new users.

In older Ubuntu versions you could easily see what you system is doing on bootup by seeing this below 'the' logo

I really like this because if I could see that something failed I didn't have to ask a question on the forums because I was able to fix it myself. In newer Ubuntu distributions this has been removed (too bad I really liked it) I don't think it's ugly I think is look nice to see that your system is actually working and still nog seeing a traditional cli booting process.
