Currently, the progressbar in usplash is updated by the initialization scripts.
Although this works ok, the progress effect is very ugly because the bar moves in huge increments and then stops for an undetermined time until it moves again. Besides not being beautiful, this provides no information to the user about the time remaining for the boot or shutdown process.
I suggest that the usplash progressbar be time-based, pretty much like the progressbar in MacOSX.
Since the booting and shutdown times do not change drastically from session to session, we could save the time the computer spent to boot and to shutdown, and use it to guide the progressbar the next time. This would provide a beautiful and smooth animation of the progressbar, and an accurate remaining time, increasing the usability.
This can be already implemented using the current usplash code without modifications whatsoever, and a working solution is already available.

Currently the Eclipse packages in Ubuntu lack heavily behind other distributions like lets say Fedora.
The packages in ubuntu are outdated and so are the eclipse language plugins like CDT or Pydev.
Properly supporting this top notch IDE should give new linux developers an easier start.

Peter Chabada, on March 21, 2006, created a page with 40+ Suggestions for Better Desktop which you can find at http://chabada.sk/better-desktop/ . Some of these ideas got implemented, but many did not. It would be nice to have 95% of these ideas in Ubuntu. With our preference of features in the order he listed his suggestions.

Offer a version of Ubuntu that comes "bare." Eliminate large, non-essential applications such as Open Office, Ekiga, Rythmbox, Evolution, Pidgin, Gimp, etc. Doing this would allow users to pick and choose the applications they wish to use. It would also be great when HDD space is limited, such as Solid State Drive based laptops.
Alternatively you could allow users to choose which applications are installed by letting them customize it during the live install.

A GUI for creating and using encrypted partitions. Should be for regular partitions and especially removable media partitions.
Developer comments
Indeed that's a long-standing open issue. DeviceKit-disks can do that, so it's a matter of packaging/using DK and DK-disks. I'm interested in working on this (although I'm not sure whether I'll manage it for Intrepid.)

Could there be a way to mark an idea as "favourite" in brainstorm.ubuntu? To star, or bookmark an idea so I can find it more easily later on and see what people have commented?

You are now able to bookmark ideas by clicking on the grey star next to the title!
To consult your bookmarks, go to your dashboard.

So the user can schedule things to be done with the GUI.
One time tasks: At
Recurring tasks: Cron
And make them share the same GUI frontend.
For one time tasks, it'd be ideal if the user can optionally turn the machine off or sleep or log off after the task.

Currently samba sharing is (in my opinion) broken, since you can't share your folders through the GUI. Instead, you have to resort to the CLI in order to create a samba user which pretty much defeats the whole purpose of a GUI.
My proposal is to modify the samba share dialogue so that it allows to create samba users:

Mark ideas that have already been taken seriously and been implemented.
There should be different states:
Considered for implementation
Scheduled for implementation
Currently in implementation
Already implemented
You can list these states like "Latest ideas" and "Most popular ideas".
Possibly there could also be an additional ranking/voting round for ideas that have been considered but not yet scheduled.

Since I don't think many people would be scared of an extra button to configure their selected screensaver, it would be really nice if it could be included (like it is in xscreensaver-settings).

Currently, each time when my Ubuntu install is messed up, I have to reformat my partition and reinstall Ubuntu. Next I have to set up everything again. That's very annoying. Other OS'es (Windows, Mac OS X, yes even SUSE, ...) have a "Repair existing system" option. This allows to reinstall the OS without having to reformat. All it would have to do is to manually check and repair dpkg/apt-get, next it has to reinstall every package present on the cd. Very easy, not too hard to implement, many users that would be very happy. Why not do it?

I think it is important for the update notifier to be color coded to stress the importance of security updates. Red updates could signify that there is an important security updates while all other updates could stay the original orange color.
Developer comments
A red exclamation mark is shown instead of the standard orange icon if there are security updates.

Ubuntu Brainstorm should make it possible to vote for idea deletion

The reason for this is to unclutter Ubuntu Brainstorm.
Some ideas submitted are not applicable, or are already existing although the poster didn't know about them.
It should be possible mark an idea for deletion instead of just voting it down, but it should be well distinguished from voting down an idea. Perhaps users must click on the idea to be able to mark it for deletion.

Give Ubuntu it's own calendar

It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?
The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.
Thanks for the oppurtunity to be heard.

Different wallpapers on different monitors/workspace
|

I've got two monitors, and right now if I use the wallpaper settings in gnome it stretches the wallpaper across the two monitors. It does this even for the default ubuntu wallpaper. This can look really bad depending on the image. In order to get around this I had to get two wallpaper images and join them into one large one with the GIMP and set that as my wallpaper.
There should be a way in gnome to set a different wallpaper for each monitor.
==== Merged with ideas of a similar scope: Different wallpapers on different workspace ===
Many workspaces option in Linux allows you to separate your work, why not allow users to have different wallpapers on each workspace. This allows for easier identification of which workspace you are on.
When used with compiz-fusion you can rapidly switch between your workspaces and the different wallapaper will allow you to quickly recognise what desktop you are on.
Currently this is natively available in KDE but not in Gnome. In Gnome you can't even let Compiz take over the wallpaper control because Nautilus doesn't allow for transparent backgrounds.
Other solutions like Wallpapoz are slow and when switching between desktops it takes too long to switch WP.

This feature is a Google Summer of Code 2008 project.
Follow the development of this feature on the student's blog:
http://gsocblog.jsharpe.net/
Update: it seems his code didn't reached Gnome 2.24, thus this feature won't be present in Intrepid.
