gksudo if I try to do an action I don't have access to

This should only apply if the logged in user has an entry in sudoers..
If I try to create a new folder, and I don't have access it should prompt me for my password (gksudo), and preform the action. This should occur for copy/paste, and all sorts of other functions that instead we have to drop to the shell..
I mainly 'sudo nautilus .' when I need to do this, but its a little clunky, don't you agree?
Developer comments
To be honest, I really don't like this idea. The clear separation between "user data/permissions" and administration is a very strong point in Unix/Linux, and we should keep it. Providing a button for "give me a super-power nautilus" is too blunt, and subverts
(a) our efforts to provide the necessary administrative bits through appropriate UI (like NetworkManager),
(b) our efforts to provide more fine-grained privileges (PolicyKit) and eventually get rid of gksu, and
(c) leads into the Administrator madness Windows users have to endure.
I'd rather collect use cases why users need to run nautilus as root in the first place, and eliminate those.

I can't find an ODF printer!? I have used PDF printer for the last 10 years, and find it very handy.
If you want people to embrace ODF, i think this would be the first step to fix.
(OS independent of course!)

Remove Ebay from default search engines list in firefox

Based on idea 5321, by Eldmannen (about removing yahoo).
We should remove ebay from the default installed searches, because:
- It reduces competition with other auction sites.
- Recently there was a uproar about changes in ebay which make in some case make it unfair. I agree!
- Ebay VERY heavily pushes Paypal, which is acknowledged by many to be very dodgy. A lot of people know someone who has been screwed by ebay. And here in aus, I had to upgrade my account because they had a bug which prevented me accessing my money (which is very unprofessional). The freenet Project owner was also screwed by ebay (and it demonstrated they don't research at all claims made against customers), and another friend of mine was charged 2x the amount he was supposed to be receiving because someone used a stolen credit card against him (so seems they profit from illegal credit cards).
- If ebay was a bank, they would have a 24/7 riot outside their building by customers who were screwed.
- Ebay doesn't exactly listen to feedback. If are a typical large company, where you have no way of providing feedback (if you scream at them over the phone, maybe they will let you speak to a manager). But they clearly dont care much (no forums).
Its to our advantage to promote competition within the auction sites. More competition means lower costs for us, and better payment methods. We should try to encourage the development of a world wide auction site that is more consumer/seller friendly, that actually promotes active feedback and improvement.
There is nothing stopping a patch being applied to the firefox code to prevent ebay being a default search engine (and it shouldn't be hard to do).

Allow install from broken CD/DVD.

If the OS figures out that the installation CD is broken (ie: cannot read from a particular sector), it should give the option to download the parts that are unreadable from the internet (it will download the parts of a .iso that are needed, not the complete .iso) and continue the installation (or use of the live CD) seamlessly.
Of course, the CD has to have the kernel and some userland tools readable (such as ftp) and a usable connection to the internet.
If this is done correctly, the amount downloaded could be quite minimal, so long as the CD doesn't have many errors on it.
Another option would be to scan the CD and give an estimation of how much has to be downloaded before the process is begun.

Remove Mono and dependent applications from default Ubuntu Desktop CD. Mono occupies a significant amount of the valuable space on the live cd that could be used for translations and other things. Applications using mono use much more memory than their non-mono counterparts. Functionality can be provided by other applications that are just as good.
This will NOT remove Mono or any of the applications from the Ubuntu repositories, just the default Desktop CD. (Although removing them from the CD may mean they don't need to be in Main anymore)
This affects two applications included by default: tomboy and f-spot. Tomboy can be replaced by either sticky notes or zim and f-spot by gthumb.

I want regular updates of the lastest versions of the applications should be in the Ubuntu backports repositories.
I know is for the security of the system, but i want for example: new drivers updates, VLC, VirtualBox-OSE, rtorrent, alien, and others applications which long time ago are with last stables versions and in the repositories always are the old versions of them; besides some applications launch its latest version for bugfixing security vulnerabilities and giving more stability of the system

1) A customizable installation (with checkboxes o something similar) you will be able to choose what packages do you want. You will can select or unselect the programs that ubuntu install as a default, if you dont need an email client you will can unselect it...
2) Integrate in 1 DVD unbuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu... you need only select what desktop do you want and what packages (see nÂș1)
"Ubuntu should be available as a live/install DVD that comes with Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and perhaps other desktop environments. Ideally, it would have equal priority to the CDs that only come with one, which would include being released at the same times. When booting from the disk, users should have an option of which environment to use. When installing, users should be able to chose which environments to install, and have options for installing additional packages designed for those environments (like the gnome and kde packages).
This would allow multiple people who prefer different environments to use the same installation disk. It would be more convenient for people who want to have e.g. both KDE and Gnome. It would make it easier for people new to Linux to learn which environment they prefer. It would make it easier for lesser used environments to gain new users. It would put all supported desktop environments on a more equal ground, rather than sanctioning one as the only "real" and "official" desktop environment for Ubuntu."

I think it is a very useful thing to have something like that by default... Formating pen drives, external HDDs...

WHITE LISTS AND BLACK LISTS FOR SPAM

Hi,
I think that there should be a SPAM program or a simple plugin to be included in Evolution and Thunderbird, which would include 2 buttons (besides the spamassassin or spampal methods): One button to add the e-mail addresses to the White list and another button to add the e-mail addresses to the Black list for SPAM.
So the email addresses included in the Whitelist won't go to the SPAM folder, and the other way around for the blacklisted email addresses.
In other words, thus the user rules over the automatic classification of emails made by the spamassasin or spampal methods.
This is very good way to quickly and securely moving the Junk mail to the right folder, while keeping the jam mail in the incoming mail.
Much like Spamfighter or Spamaware do.

Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!
WHAT THE HELL!
Who need that amount of screensavers?
I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?
Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?
For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Boot to turn Harddisks into an AoE drive or external fw drive

Apple have designed macintosh hardware in a way that it is trivial to access data on another mac, as if it were an external Harddisk. So the computer doesn't need to be opened, and you can install programs directly onto it without network protocols.
Apple's method of doing it is:
1) Turn on the computer you want to treat like an external harddisk and hold down T on the keyboard.
2) Plug in a normal 6-pin firewire cable between both Mac's.
3) All mounted devices (USB memory sticks, inserted CD's and HDD's) will appear on the other computer, as if the computer was a external drive.
4) You may boot off the external drives as if they were internal, and use them as normal.
Some potential uses of this technology are:
1) Easier to service the computer. If the software is dodgy, you can easily determine this because the computers data will still appear on the other computer. This means that you can also copy data off even if it wont boot.
2) Boot off a remote computer. If the video card is faulty on a computer, you can simply put it into target disk mode, start up the other computer, and it will be as if you were on the other computer.
3) Easy migration of data. Many computer manufacturers such as IBM's or Dell's will not allow you to open a computer within the warranty period, so it is not easy to migrate the data over. You cannot just take the harddisk out and put it in the new computer. With this, since the computer can be made to appear as if it were an external Harddisk, it is effortless to program something to migrate the data over.
One problem however is that Apple implements this via EFI or Open firmware. While many PC's are now getting EFI support, its not that common.
One method we could use to deal with the lack of EFI, is to simply include a modified kernel which instead of mounting the directories, etc, acted as a block device over firewire/ATA over ethernet so that the harddisks would appear on the other computer. Loading the kernel would be done via grub on LiveCD (so the harddisk is not in use)

Make soundjuicer fat32 compatible

Some special characters are not supported by fat32, which many mp3 players use. By default soundjuicer doesn't change names of songs or albums, so you'll have to change names manually if you want to add them to your mp3 player. The solution for this problem in soundjuicer is to strip all special characters, which means everything except standard characters from the alphabet gets replaced by _. "Hey you" becomes "Hey_you" "Is there anybody out there?" becomes "Is_there_anybody_out_there_".
There should be a second option to just drop the special characters, like this:"Is there anybody out there", the character ":" could be replaced by"-". This would make it easier to use soundjuicer with mp3players.

Pause keyboard input if window appears while typing

One thing that's always bothered me, no matter which OS I've been on, is the way I can be typing in one window when another program tosses up a notification or error which immediately gets closed because I just pressed space or enter. I propose a mechanism be developed by which keyboard input is temporarily paused or halted if a window appears when more than X number of keys is being pressed per ten seconds.
I realise the difficulties inherent in this; a daemon or service would eat up unnecessary CPU cycles, it's impractical to patch every program in existence to follow this behaviour, and most other ways of doing this have one argument against them or another. However, if this were presented as an opt-in behaviour, I believe it would benefit a fair percentage of people for a relatively small amount of coder output.

Instead of having separate distros for GNOME and KDE versions of Ubuntu, there should be one centralized version. When a user goes to install Ubuntu,(s)he should be prompted about which desktop environment to use. Because many new users have no clue what this means, there should be a box that says "I'm not sure", which would select GNOME (if this is what the community wants). This would help unify the splintered Ubuntu and Kubuntu communities and would without a doubt send Ubuntu over PCLinuxOS on DistroWatch.com b/c currently Kubuntu, with 35% of Ubuntu's collective users, is counted as a separate distro.
