downthemall program has been here for a long time now. It is a magnificent free download program which I have experienced, works even faster than download accelerator. So far it can be used as an addon to a browser. But from experience I know it works with Mozilla closed and the bin running. Therefore I think this project can be integrated to the OS when downloading any program as the OS 'Save' default.

Ok, I admit this is a bit of a fantasy idea, but I think it's possible and could become a killer-app for Ubuntu/linux. Basically I think it would be very cool to be able to pipe commands from one program to another using a gui. I know this is possible via the command line, but imagine if a non-techie user could use a gui to tell ubuntu to monitor a divx download in firefox and when it's finished ubuntu should tell gstreamer to convert the file to ogv and then tell nautilus to burn it to a dvd or email it to a certain address. Or maybe use piping to automatically synchronize data between several programs e.g. once an hour/day/week the piping program opens evolution exports the data, then it opens thunderbird, sunbird, addressbook etc and syncs them with the new information and then it connects with an online pim like gmail/google calendar or your blackberry server and syncs the data there. All of this could be done with a GUI in a similar way to Yahoo! pipes. I think this could open up a whole new way of computing for ordinary people.

Optimizing memory usage

Create a system that allows programmers force to use swap memory for any data that will not be used much over a program, it can assist in the performance of ubuntu in general since many systems become slow when they start to use for swap Data read / write continuously while others are stored and used every minute or more and saved in the real ram memory (Dependent on the dataflow)
This should be done by creating a function in C to be more call for example swapalloc and used as alloc
In systems with little of ram or when we run a lot of programs that would be very useful since it would organize our data in the memory necessary to expedite the power system.
In addition, a good option would be to force load programmes in the RAM and not in the swap as possible (as long as there RAM available), and these would be used much flow

Ubuntu is great but when it comes time to develop php apps we rapidly miss some extensions. Mandriva for example have almost all existing php extensions as separate package you can install and keep up to date easily.
For example have readline and/or libedit extension without the need to recompile php by hand would be greatly appreciated.
Php-gtk2 will be a good thing too (now that there's a stable release out there)

Merge installer CD with alternative installer

Right now we have two installer CDs. The normal one, and a separate alternative installer.
They both contain the same packages, the only difference is the installer.
I think we should merge the two CDs, so that you can run the alternative installer from the normal CD.

Ability to select an idea as being an "Alternate Solution" to another idea

I've noticed that alternate solutions to ideas are going in "Duplicates" or in the comments.
Both places are bad for an alternate idea to be on a level playing field.
There should be a list of alternate ideas on both the alternate and original idea's page.
We have the option to do:
[Report a duplicate and merge its votes to this idea]
I think there should be one that says:
[Report a alternate solution and post it to this and the other idea's "Alternate Solution List"]
A little long, but I think that it can be shortened :)

Ensure distrobution upgrades run smoothly

My experience with distribution upgrades (7.04 to 7.10, 7.10 to 8.04, etc) is that they "Just Don't Work". This is very unfortunate considering Ubuntu's otherwise outstanding level of usability. Ubuntu must ensure that distribution upgrades either run smoothly or fail gracefully.
When I upgraded from 7.04 to 7.10, I received a few esoteric error messages. Worse, before completing the upgrade my screen went completely black. I had to use tab and space to blindly cycle through all dialogs until the computer eventually restarted.
While upgrading to Hardy Heron, I again received error messages. After the update was complete and the computer restarted, I found that I could not install Firefox 3, and Firefox 2 would not work anymore. I am by no means a beginner with Ubuntu, but it took me significant effort to solve this issue. See these ubuntuforums discussions for more information - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4786850#post4786850 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=746362&page=2
As I said, Ubuntu is highly praised for its emphasis on usability. As long as these and similar problems continue, users will be left with a level of uncertainty and distrust after every upgrade.
If only this upgrading process can be improved to the point where it is on par with other features of Ubuntu, Ubuntu as a whole will be almost completely seamless.

It would be good if it were possible to install an uptodate LAMP stack on your desktop via "add/remove programs".
When installed, it should install all the latest versions of:
MySQL
Apache
PHP
on the desktop and automatically set everything up.
It would be even better if it auto installed cgi with perl, python, c, and c++ so cgi would run from the browser.

There's some little things that annoy me in the Ubuntu Menus :
- some icons don't have any picture in it, like Kde apps in the gnome menu (in the "others" menu in particular). There shoud be an icon displayed in each menu entries
- When you edit the menu, there's some application entries that are there twice (one checked to be shown, the other unchecked). This kind of things must disappear ...
Note : this is NOT A DUPE (not #4709)

Make third party developers involved in brainstorm

It would be good if we could make developers of third-party software (such as firefox) to at least gaze through this site every once in a while as many of the ideas being presented here concerns software that is not directly developed by the ubuntu team.

Nautilus "open with" needs some revisiting

In Nautilus (Gnome default file manager), right clicking a file and selecting "Open with... other application" brings up a dialog with the following issues:
1. The application list is not consistent with other application menus, e.g. the one on the panel
2. Some applications are not listed (these apps are added to the other menus though)
3. The non-modifiable behaviour is to set the "other application" as the default for that file type so an option to "use this as the default application for this file type" should be added
Example for #3:
- I have a PDF file
- I want to open it with PDFedit
- It is not in the open with menu
- Select it through open with other application
- It now becomes the default however I still want evince to be the default PDF viewer
- I have to repeat the above to open with evince to make that the default again

Have a centralised sudo-gui command

Currently, there is no way for users or developers to select their default sudo command, because they all have different command names. For KDE, there is a command like: KDE-sudo. Not sure what gnome uses, but its probably another random command, and for terminal, its "sudo"
By creating a symlink from /bin/sudo-gui to the preferred sudo program (terminal or GUI), developers can easily take advantage of the preferred sudo program by running "sudo-gui". Otherwise its kinda brute force for developers. ie, Try KDE-sudo, if it fails try gnome-sudo, if it fails try bsudo, else, do via terminal based sudo. The user should be able to choose the sudo shell they want to use by default! Some gui based sudo's have security advantages over terminal based, or otherwise (ie, the gui ones may disable keyboard hooks and VNC whilst logging in so keyboard sniffers wont work, and you cant do that to the terminal sudo command or SSH becomes worthless for admins),
It just helps standardise commands for developers, and makes customisation easier for users. It may also provide future security advantages.
If this is already being done, please comment and let me know, and I'll mark this idea to be deleted. I've only used sudo from command line, none of the programs I have written have ever needed to escalate their privileges, so if this wont work, let me know too.

Better Splash Screen transition

The splash screen that shows after you login always has an orange background. This doesn't really fit with my customized theme. I think if the spashscreen was shown above a screengrab of the login window, it would be very professional, even when you have changed your theme.
Also, if compiz could load in the background of the spashscreen, it would look much smoother than what it is now (Splashscreen, blank orange, desktop)
That way, the desktop would be completely loaded once the splash screen goes away.
