If you want to install Ubuntu in an LUKS-encrypted drive, you have to use Alternate Install CD. It's an annoyance and it limits the use of one of the most interesting thigs Linux offers.

Selected solution (#1): Include support for LUKS/LVM in default install
Written by KEsse the 4 May 10 at 12:09.
During the partitioning give the user an option to install to encrypted LVM(similar to this in alternate CD). Include lvm and cryptsetup packages in LiveCD.

Selected solution (#2): Include, and make it more usable with USB authentication
Written by TheFinePrint the 6 May 10 at 22:21.
Offer USB keyfile authentication alongside conventional password authentication.

For several years I have been using LUKS/LVM together with a USB-stick to unlock the boot. The method is already fully developed (proving that there is a demand). What's missing is an elegant and integrated way of generating the USB-key without the terminal.

Selected solution (#3): /home encryption is already offered
Written by jbicha the 8 May 11 at 07:02.
For nearly all users, full-disk encryption provides no benefit and significantly interrupts interoperability in dual-booting scenarios. Many users may need encryption of their /home partition; this is a prominent choice in the Ubuntu installer so I would mark this bug as FIXED.

Oh no, someone will steal my laptop and find out I have installed Chromium!

Remember that every single option in the installer has a real cost.

Use HTTPS for all Ubuntu websites (like brainstorm.ubuntu.com, ubuntuforums.org)
Written by micah the 28 May 11 at 23:53. Related project: ubuntuforums.org. Not an idea
I often like to use Ubuntu's websites when I'm on untrusted networks (like at coffee shops), but I don't like logging into websites of HTTP and sending my password and session cookies in plaintext.

Launchpad.net does a great job with this, but the rest of Ubuntu's websites should do this as well.

brainstorm.ubuntu.com should be accessible from https://brainstorm.ubuntu.com, and ubuntuforums.org should be accessible from https://ubuntuforums.org.

Ubuntu One Force Sync
Written by Hugh971 the 19 May 11 at 21:49. Global category: Others. Not an idea
It would be very useful in Ubuntu One to be able to force a sync. At the moment to do this you have to disconnect and reconnect.

Generating grub.cfg several times increases update times
Written by fluteflute the 24 May 11 at 08:29. Related project: Update manager. Not an idea
When I'm updating (through aptitude for me, but I'm sure this problem happens whatever you use to update with) then a new grub.cfg is generated several times.

For me today, during one update, this happened three times. It only needs to happen once! It is a time consuming operation.

If you look at the terminal output for this you can see the problem. Look at lines 278, 301 and 361.

Solution #1: Only update grub once (at end of the update)
Written by fluteflute the 24 May 11 at 08:29.
I don't know the technical details of packaging, but I think there is/should be some way for packages to mark that they want grub.cfg regenerated.

Then once all the packages are installed, the package manager looks and says "oh look, this package wanted grub.cfg updated, let's do it". This way if multiple packages request for grub.cfg to be regenerated it only happens once.

Allow the user to clear the recently used files from Unity
Written by dan7196 the 9 May 11 at 23:31. Related project: Unity. Not an idea
Just because you recently opened a file does not mean that you always want those files hanging around. I understand that it's less commonly used but Gnome used to allow you to easily clear recently used files, Unity has no such option on any panel that I can see.

As of now I had to re-login into classic to clear the files (unless I felt like running scripts). Having some middle ground between this scripting solution and being a prominent menu option is desired.

Solution #2: Add system-wide option to disable recent files
Written by tenchi39 the 13 May 11 at 07:42.
I don't use recent files, I don't even want to see them. I don't want to waste recources to display them.

Solution #3: Enable editing of history in Activity Journal
Written by joerlend the 15 May 11 at 12:45.
The Activity Journal has great potential. It doesn't seem to work well in 11.04, but that's a different issue. We need an application similar to that, where you can edit your history. Not only the recent files, but your favorite applications (that may change as time goes by), GPS coordinates if they're in use, etc.

Solution #4: Present Activity Log Manager under Settings
Written by dulbirakan the 21 May 11 at 16:34.
There is a nifty piece of code that allows the users to specify folders or file types that they do not want logged as well as deleting specific activities. Bundle Activity log manager with Ubuntu More information in http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/05/activity-log-manager-for-zeitgeist-lets-you- blacklist-files-and-apps-delete-your-history-more/

Solution #5: Sollution 1 + 2
Written by dreamwanderer the 13 Jun 11 at 19:18.
Some people don't need recent files, some just don't want something logged. Having the ability to clear recent files(for 1,2...hours/days, ar all of it) + the ability to turn off the history(either temporarily or permanent) would satisfy most users.

Another Brainstorming Search Order
Written by jsatkanpak the 29 Feb 08 at 20:39. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. New
"Most Popular Ideas" is not necessarily the most useful search. It could be that these ideas have been around a long time, so have had more votes.

I would rename the current "Most Popular" to "Most Voted For" and make the "Most Popular" list report the order in (# of votes over time listed). This would allow very recent posts that are getting a lot of votes to appear at the top of the list.

Otherwise, the newer posts seem to slide into oblivion on the "Latest Ideas" search, regardless of actual user interest.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #1800
Written by jsatkanpak the 29 Feb 08 at 20:39.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #1800 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!
