First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)

Allow alt-tab while dragging (and other drag&drop improvements)
Written by bslagter the 10 Mar 08 at 17:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see some improvements in dragging support:
* Allow alt-tab (switch active window) while dragging
* Allow drag an attachment from Thunderbird to nautilus
* Allow drag files from Archive manager to nautilus
* Allow drag a picture from nautilus into Open Office
* Focus/raise a window on drop (mouse-up) instead of drag (mouse-down)
* Make it easier to drop files in a full nautilus window to copy/move (for example: popup drop target in bottom while dragging)

Thunderbird as default email client
Written by cmayoros the 29 Feb 08 at 02:34. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
While both Evolution and Thunderbird are great applications, Thunderbird should become the default email client available on Ubuntu.

Developer comments
There are currently no plans to move away from Evolution at this time.

Improve the "Save as..." and "Open file" Nautilus mini-browser
Written by fde the 29 Feb 08 at 09:54. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you want to open a file, or save a file from an application, you have to use this mini file browser. It is tiny, not easily usable, and particularly frustrating when searching for an image, since you can't have a thumbnail of them.

It should be bigger by default, and it should be possible to choose the view of the file (list, details or thumbnails).

Put more effort in polishing GNOME (hire more programmers?)
Written by mati the 29 Feb 08 at 15:32. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"The only other major gaps in Ubuntu's functionality are the result of weaknesses in the GNOME desktop environment. As I mentioned in my recent GNOME 2.20 review, GNOME's file dialogs are still woefully inadequate, lacking support for multiple image thumbnail display and basic file operations like delete and rename. GNOME's feature-anemic file manager also lacks many of the more powerful user interface features found in KDE alternatives like Dolphin.

Although Ubuntu isn't directly responsible for these problems, the distribution still suffers from the defects. The Ubuntu developers could help to address these issues by encouraging upstream developers to revisit some of their design decisions. Canonical could also potentially invest some resources to resolve these problems upstream by contributing the necessary fixes. At this time, Canonical still isn't nearly as involved as Red Hat or Novell in upstream GNOME development. Usability improvements are an area where the Ubuntu development community would really be able to bring something useful back upstream."

Include Avant Window Navigator (AWN) by default
Written by CydeSwype the 28 Feb 08 at 23:59. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In much the same way that Compiz got included as part of the default install (and got a lot of attention) AWN should be included (for those who can run it) as it adds an additional level of polish. Would help woo some Mac users probably too.

Orange/Brown theme should not be the only one
Written by bourlas the 2 Mar 08 at 23:35. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Orange Brown theme should not be the only one included
There should be color themes based on all the basic
colors e.g. blue theme, yellow theme, red theme, black theme
green theme.

Better Screenshot Manager
Written by spyyder the 16 Mar 08 at 01:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Screenshot program that can:

1) Draw Rectangular box
2) Screen shot of an individual window (or content in window)
3) Draw Custom shapes
4) Capture full motion (screencap)
etc...

Merge with a multi-image clipboard, ability to upload directly to web or transfer to other program.

Additional file formats .bmp, .jpg, .gif, (.flv, .mpg for screencap) etc...

Program should be native, not part of Compiz.

Written by deadowl the 3 Apr 08 at 04:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Or at least do as good of a job as possible (please)...

This is for everyone on the Ubuntu desktop that uses Amarok and other KDE programs.

This is for everyone on the Kubuntu desktop that uses X-Chat and other GTK+ programs.

gtk applications need an advanced/unified printing dialogue
Written by kernelOfTruth the 3 Mar 08 at 15:19. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
gtk applications especially openoffice, mozilla firefox, mozilla thunderbird, ...

need an advanced & unified printing dialog which is comparable to the ones offered by microsoft's windows' printing drivers

they at least should include support for several pages per sheet (4 pages on 1 paper; 2 pages on 1 paper, duplex, etc etc)

apps like evince already support it but it's definitely missing on openoffice & firefox (where it obviously is needed the most)

a good example for offered printing options is kpdf

sorry if that functionality is already planned for the next upcoming versions of the mentioned apps

thanks ! =)

Make Gnome vector grapics like KDE/OSX/Vista now!

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.

I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!

Further work on Intel Driver   forum
Written by eggplant37 the 29 Feb 08 at 11:07. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've one of the Dell Inspiron 1420n laptops with Ubuntu factory installed that came with the Intel X3100/GM965 video integrated on the motherboard. I cannot afford to simply toss this aside and buy a brand new machine. What I'd love to see is more work done to improve the xorg Intel video to support this chip and actually be able to play some games on it, namely World of Warcraft. I know that if I were to reformat the drive on it and install Windows XP, the thing would scream on Warcraft. Why can't the xorg Intel driver support the same performance on this chipset?

it's so awesome. :] I think it should at the very least be in repos, but I think it'd be awesome if we could include a theme using it as an option in the Appearance dialog.

Actually that is the feature that I'm missing more in Ubuntu. To be able to preview the content of the documents is very usefull for those who use OpenOffice.org.

GEdit should work with remote files the same way as with local
Written by oleksiy the 5 Mar 08 at 09:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At present if you have opened local file and you press Ctrl-O to open next one gedit will correctly change to the directory of current file. This is correct. But that doesn't work with remote files (ssh, ftp, etc). Each time you open next file you will need to repeat directory browsing...

Also file browser in the sidebar doesn't work with remote filesystems.

Evolution Calendar - Drag&Drop Appointments
Written by sessorbsed the 8 Mar 08 at 22:18. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Implement the drag & drop action on appointments between days.

Ex : We are monday, I click on my appointment at 10AM and drag it on any day in the calendar on the left to move it. It will appear that day at 10AM.

Really really handy.

Like in Outlook :'(

Wireless Drivers Patched for Injection
Written by mexlinux the 11 Mar 08 at 15:47. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Wireless Drivers should come patched for injection in order to make it faster and easier to use tools like aircrack.
Having a patched driver won't afect a user that does not need injection, and will make life much easier for a user that needs it.
That would also convert the Live CD into an Network Security Tool, just like wifiway.

It would be nice to be capable of having multiple side bars underneath each other. Such as having the 'Places' menu, then underneath having the 'Notes' menu. I would be interested in using the 'Notes' bar, but not at the expense of having to keep switching between that and the 'Places' menu, so being able to have them both on together would be great.

Keep the Human Theme!
Written by Folk_Theory the 3 Mar 08 at 22:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
the Human theme (namely the oranges and browns and yellows) are what make Ubuntu unique and different in look and feel to any other OS. don't change it!

if we switch to a blue theme we'll look like every other distro out there and even like the Windows!

Thanks.
