Make OpenOffice Sexy, port RedOffice   forum
Written by Liam McDermott the 3 Jun 08 at 01:23. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A fantastic front-end to OpenOffice has been developed. Currently it is only available for Windows, but will be ported to Linux shortly.

As this new front-end will be available under the GPL we should use it in Ubuntu (or see if upstream would be willing to include it).

OpenOffice is often accused of looking archaic, not only that but we need to catch up with the interface of Microsoft Office 2007. Something you might not notice at first glance are the new templates, they're far nicer than the ones OpenOffice ships with (shouldn't be difficult to remove the Chinese symbols if required).

It's time for Ubuntu to get on the ball with FreeNX. FreeNX is an extremely fast and powerful screen sharing server which far surpasses any similar technology Ubuntu currently ships with.

FreeNX allows for super fast remote sessions, even over dial-up connections. FreeNX has tightly-integrated printer, file, and audio sharing. FreeNX is so light on bandwidth that it would allow for fast LTSP clients even over wireless bridges.

NX was designed with remote users in mind. It's not a technology developed for occasional remote computer desktop access. It built for everyday use.

Ubuntu should completely support and integrate this technology by the following:
1. Include it in the software repositories. (ensure that it works with all Ubuntu variations and all NX clients)
2. Set FreeNX as the default remote desktop server. (develop ability to connect to existing sessions first)
3. Integrate NX connection abilities into whatever remote desktop client is set by default.
4. Replace XDMCP with FreeNX server/client in LTSP. (see http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5848/)
5? Creating an "access my pc from anywhere in the world" service using FreeNX.

Keywords: Dynamic remote desktop feature, SSH, X11, VNC, Free NX, XEPHYR

Easier "printer connected to the client" support in Edubuntu/LTSP
Written by gdrouillard the 4 Mar 08 at 17:44. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Having to setup shared printers in cups is time consuming.

For example each teacher in a classroom has one printer and one terminal. I would be nice that when they log in that the attached printer is the default printer automatically.

If you right-click on a folder, and go to "Share" tab, an ugly icon appears on the top left corner:

http://www.box.net/shared/coos9xu880

I think this can be replaced by an icon in the native human icon theme -- "/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/filesystems/gnome-fs-share.svg":

http://www.box.net/shared/79r57kxyc4

So the whole thing will look like this (edited using GIMP):

Follow old Ubuntu installation
Written by JYC the 30 May 08 at 04:36. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubiquity can find old Ubuntu partitions for their old profile and data, but what I can't understand is why it can't follow the old settings (language, keyboard, time zone)? Maybe it should go like this:

1) Welcome
2) Partition
Find and load old Ubuntu partitions
3) Popup to use old settings if any, including profiles, lang., keyboard, timezone, etc.
--Uncheck stuff you want to change.
3+ or 4+) Go thru stuff you want to change, or all of it if there isn't a old Ubuntu install
Lastly) Done!

TTY : change default resolution for high resolution monitor
Written by ax the 30 May 08 at 12:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
English :
-------------
Yep,
Most monitor allow resolution higher than 1024x768 and now in wide.
If Xorg detect default resolution higher than 1024x768 it should be good to set default tty resolution to 1024x768 for nice use/view.

if it was, sorry for my bad english =)

Francais :
--------------
Yep,

Take a look at my ideas

Have Update Manager warn you if an update requires a reboot, BEFORE you update.   forum
Written by Catsceo the 29 May 08 at 19:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I find it very annoying when I update my Ubuntu box, only to find that after the update I need to reboot. I suggest a solution similar to Apple's software update*, where the update has the reboot icon located next to it to signify that a reboot will be needed or a reboot icon on the panel, similar to the way the new red down arrow in hardy signifies an important update.

Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository
Written by unimatrix the 30 May 08 at 13:00. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

Let's help open source achieve another great victory!

Developer comments
This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

add a "view in english" button to all error messages
Written by briceparent the 30 May 08 at 09:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.

Thanks

Brice

Repositories MUST be updated, otherwise some packages are useless
Please backport warsow 0.42.dfsg1-1 from Intrepid

bug

For example, I noticed that Warsow (shooter online game) is in version 0.32 in the repositories, and the up to date version is 0.42. It would not be a very big problem if the program would still be usefull, but in this case, as the game is online, needs to conect to a server and this directly depends on the version that is installed. So, this package in the repositories is useless because nobody will be able to play as they arent players in the servers for this version.

Everybody does not realize that the version is old, so there is people that is going to think that the game isnt playable and this affects very negatively to the users experience.

And I guess that warsow is not the only package with this problem.
If something in the repositories is useless, there must be a change: update it or remove it, both options are better than having the wrong idea of why something doesnt work. It is better to think that the problem can be fixed easily.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I want to clarify something: I am not talking about the packages that are still useful even if they are not updated. Of course, they should be updated, but the main problem I am pointing out are the packages that are useless if they are not updated because I think that these are more urgent than the others. It seems logical for me, as the other packages still work and have a practical function while these are completely useless.
As sidney said in one of his comments, maybe this packages that I am talking about could be reduced to the ones that depend on internet, but not necessarily and they dont have to be games necessarily either.
So, I would bet that there are lots o packages that have no reason to exist if they are not updated and and we need a deep revision, update and cleaning.

I hope to have clarified the idea completely now.
Leave a comment if the vote is negative, please, so I can improve something.
---------------------------------------------------
There are some very good ideas in some comments (for example, Auzy's, ru7hl3ss's or mp3phish's), so read them and take them into account too, please.

Dolphin with tabs
Written by Square87 the 17 Apr 08 at 06:48. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi.
One of the major lacks in Dolphin (the file manager for KDE) is given by: there isn't the support for tabs.

Tabs are very important, all new softwares have them.
It's quite ugly to have to open many windows.

I know that in the SVN for KDE4 dolphin has tabs.
But the version installed for Hardy (with kde 3.5.9) doesn't have tabs.

Thanks for attention.
Bye

Clean up KDE Menu
Written by DJBomberman the 24 Apr 08 at 12:53. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Clean up the KDE Menu and sort the packages into the right "folders".

SuSE made it very nice, because they sorted it very well!
f.e. there are 2 folders:
K-Menu->games->arcade
K-Menu->games->card games
and in the folder games, there are some card- or arcadegames too, so why don't they put it into this folders???

Add " Most popular " section to synaptic and set it to default
Written by tienm the 21 May 08 at 19:49. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A lot of the 24817 currently listed apps in my synaptic I'm not interested in. It is very likely we are all searching for the same set of extra apps.

Let's have a "most popular" list of let's say 200 apps, where you can easily browse through. This will help the novice user as well as the experienced user to install their fav. apps.

This list can be compiled on a monthly basis, based on the number of full downloads on ubuntu servers for example (only when a method can be found where users are not able to cheat).

Firefox - offer to kill firefox instead of restart the system
Written by wladston the 22 May 08 at 17:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes, when I try to open firefox, I get this error

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

I propose to change that, including a button - "Close firefox now" :

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process. [Close firefox now]

Browsing a document in OpenOffice is not changing it
Written by azimout the 22 May 08 at 15:00. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I open a document with OpenOffice (e.g. a .ppt presentation), I browse through it and decide it's not the one I was looking for. When I close it, OpenOffice will ask me if I want to save or dismiss the changes. If you open 5-6 documents like this, it can be quite annoying...

OpenOffice should ignore the fact that I'm closing the document at a different page than the one it opened to...

Please push this idea upstream to the OOo developers...

Use all (or nearly all) available instruction sets
Written by ethana2 the 22 May 08 at 05:48. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
..set up a distributed cross-compilation system if you need to. If you don't trust that, build in redundancy and checksumming.

The fact of the matter is that, as illustrated here,
http://mssaleh.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/ubuntu-804-lts-vs-windows-xp-sp3-applic ation-performance-benchmark/
constantly catering to the lowest common denominator in processor instruction sets is getting our butts kicked on performance even by /windows/ in many cases.
I don't want to waste my hardware's capability on i386 code, and I don't want to gentoo users laughing at me.

I want to go to the ubuntu site, pick my general type of machine (preferably using pretty pictures) , and have two choices:

-- Just give me something that works
or
-- I want to make the best use of my hardware

The latter option should let me download a utility that would examine my CPU and create a file (or something to that effect) that could be returned to the ubuntu site and used to choose the right disk image (with the right repository set of course) for my machine.

Promote Edubuntu in K-12 Schools
Written by tromboneman the 27 Mar 08 at 13:25. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
BACKGROUND:
Schools should be the first place any operating system company/community promotes their operating system. Microsoft figured this out a long time ago. They practically gave away copies of Windows to K-12 schools. Schools said, "It is almost free of cost. That is all that matters to us." The students that used these Windows computers grew up, and had to buy a computer. Windows is what they learned on, so it is what they purchased and used.

WHAT DO WE NEED:
What we need to do (as an Edubuntu community) is to set up a site similar to the abandoned Schoolforge.net designed as a meeting place for everything regarding Edubuntu and Free/Open Source Software in schools. It would provide reasons other than cost as to why schools should switch to Edubuntu and Free/Open Source Software, as well as resources for anyone who wanted to get involved.

WHY US:
Edubuntu is by far the greatest educational GNU/Linux distro on the planet. It is our job to show off this amazing distro. On the Edubuntu site, there is no information whatsoever on the advantages of using it over Windows or Mac. Ubuntu already has a huge community backing it, making it the perfect candidate to start something like this.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
If we want to instill the values of openness in students, promote the use of Ubuntu around the world, and create the GNU generation, we need to make a site serving as a hub for educators and those promoting the use of Edubuntu in schools.

Consistent Website layout for different editions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.)
Written by Cryophallion the 6 Mar 08 at 15:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right now, the Ubuntu main page looks the most professional oriented and polished, the Edubuntu is close to that but has a few layout differences, and the Kubuntu looks like the main page to a wiki with two dragons (one for kde4).

All 4 of the edition website should like very similar (different color themes and such of course), with consistent navigation to wikis, documentation, etc.

There should also be screenshots on the main page of each (or at least an link that stands out to them).

That will make the brand seem more unified and professional.

education on ubuntu website
Written by emir_n the 6 Mar 08 at 23:25. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The main reason why 90% of world's population is using windows is that they are afraid of Linux.
Increasing market share is possible by explaining people that Ubuntu is not only for geeks.
Therefor on Ubuntu website should be:
-e books
-tutorials and even video tutorials explaining how to work in different programs.
