Make it possible to mark applications "Disable Compiz when running"
Written by johan the 3 Mar 08 at 21:54. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
This is what I want:

I want to be able to mark applications "Not Compiz compatible" so that Compiz shuts down when I launch a game or some other 3D-heavy application. This is something I want to improve stability and performance for such applications.

Developer comments
This will be automatically fixed with the arrival of DRI2 and updated drivers. There is no point in adding a plugin or workaround like suggested. The caveat here is that the initial support for DRI2 is only for intel's i915 at the moment... maybe with i965 following shortly thereafter.

When the OpenSource drivers for ATI (radeon, radeonHD) and nVIDIA (nouveau) will support DRI2 is still unknown. But the only way to fix the mentioned bugs is via DRI2. There is not much action that can come from our (Canonical) side as we don't have any experienced upstream Xorg developer in our team.

Better Hardware Profile Manager
Written by spyyder the 16 Mar 08 at 18:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A better compilation of the hardware inside your computer/laptop. The current hardware manager is quite complicated looking and doesn't list details in a readable manner. Instead of listing generic names, it should list brand names, hardware versions, etc. On a Mac there is a very nice "About this MAC" that list specific details about the hardware in a computer with easy to understand details and actively updated changes. It also included build information that could list Ubuntu core files, version numbers, dependencies etc.

Simply said, a one stop shop, for a user to see what is in their computer and details of core software. A GUI could show a schematic diagram on how the various part of the computer are connected and work together.

This could be tied to the "hardware compatibility" idea and any incompatibility could be listed in here.

Single login to Ubuntu websites
Written by brm the 3 Apr 08 at 02:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
It appears that one needs to create separate accounts (username and password) for ubuntuforums.org, launchpad.net and brainstorm.ubuntu.com

How difficult would it be to implement a single login?

Update : NOT a duplicate of OpenID idea #9.

Developer comments
OpenID will be implemented as the single-sign-on solution for Ubuntu websites.

Provide a simple interface for labeling partitions   forum
Written by descentspb the 3 May 08 at 13:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This becomes especially useful with Hardy, which gives unrecognizable names to the unnamed partitions like "100 GB media" etc. For example right-click on the partition and bring up it's options, where you can change the label.

Make gnome-panel more beautiful
Written by gmeier the 5 May 08 at 16:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.

There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.

It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.

Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

Wireless Network Access (WPA protected) during the Install!
Written by a49002 the 29 Feb 08 at 02:22. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So far, when installing ubuntu/kubuntu, Ethernet cards are generally detected, as are many wireless cards, but when requesting a DHCP address during the install it isnt able to connect to a wireless Router with password protection in place.

Can you consider adding a facility to connect to a WPA (PSK etc) protected Router during the install so that updates etc can happen without fussy configuration firstly? Most home users have real trouble with the wireless connection side of things. Not being able to see the wireless router in the very first stages of going to install a new OS is quite unnerving.

Protected Wireless Routers (not WEP which is essentially unsecure) at home are becoming the norm now, rather than cat5 cabled Ethernet connections.

All the packages in the software repository should include a URL hyperlink to the official website of the software.

So when you read about the software, you can click on the link to get to the official homepage, for more information.

Developer comments
This is in progress: The latest packaging rules explicitly ask to add the homepage URL of the software to the package. You can already see the homepage URL of some packages in Hardy Heron via the "Add/Remove applications" program.

Fix Flash Crash In Firefox And Other Web Browsers
Written by tdrusk the 29 Feb 08 at 01:14. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
If Ubuntu wants to be a serious operating system they need to fix video playing on sites like Youtube and such. My browser always crashes and it is very annoying having to force quit all the time.

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Fix <title> in brainstorm
Written by pengo the 7 Aug 08 at 00:20. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. Not an idea
The title bar in Brainstorm is not very descriptive, so please fix the "title" HTML tag.

E.g. for

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/latest_ideas/

it should include the words "Latest Ideas". (Currently it is just "Ubuntu brainstorm".)

Like <title>Latest Ideas - Ubuntu brainstorm</title>

So as you're scrolling through you can look up and remember what list it is.

Likewise for:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ideas_being_worked_upon/

etc.

This is a no brainer. Really.

willwill100 look and feel (devianart)
Written by elmoj the 7 Aug 08 at 07:51. Category: Others. Related to: Gnome. New
This is not my idea, is from willwill100 on DevianArt:

He/she make this mockup for Ubuntu and I think is one of the best ever created (my opinion).

He/she doesn't know that I publish his/her ideas here... But I think that if Ubuntu has this Look and Feel, Ubuntu will be better (or best :P)

As always, excuse my poor english.

Standardise the Configuration directories.

Written by Auzy the 29 Feb 08 at 10:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
User directories on ubuntu are easily a mess at the moment. They need more standardisation and more sense to remain clean. If you go to terminal/bash you may discover that your directory looks something like:

/home/auzy/Documents
/home/auzy/.Azureus (Hidden)
/home/auzy/.gnome2 (Hidden)
/home/auzy/Desktop
/home/auzy/.bashrc2 (Hidden)
/home/auzy/readme.rtf
/home/auzy/.Trash (Hidden)
/home/auzy/iffy.rtf
/home/auzy/delete me.rtf
/home/auzy/argggggg.c
/home/auzy/fgdhgfdhd.txt
/home/auzy/Music
/home/auzy/.ooffice (Hidden)
/home/auzy/friendsassignment.c
/home/auzy/friendsassignmentCopy.c
etc.

While you may note that anything with . is hidden normally, what if someone wants to delete the settings for a program? They need to manually unhide it, and sort through the dozens of directories in the home directory to find it. The problems with this is that:

a) Its messy, and certainly not a clean solution
b) Users cannot easily access their settings.
c) Everyones home directory is normally trashed with hundreds of other files, making it difficult to navigate.

Better Support for Multi-Core Processors
Written by spyyder the 18 Mar 08 at 19:46. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.

ok, the default image viewer doesn't display .gifs correctly (they aren't animated). neither does F-spot. ok, we have how many image viewers by default and how many of them work with gif files?? This is just basic stuff that needs fixing. We can do better than this...
