The voting feature is being abused at the moment, as its a feature that everyone sees the first thing, and are click-happy. It would be better if we were allowed to vote only when we also comment.

Make Ubuntu perfect and run on all computer
Written by yekcim the 26 Apr 08 at 18:59. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. New
The title is an example of idea i think Brainstorm have to hide : Some ideas are too logical.

Examples :
- Add software 2.0 and not software 1.9
- Support acpi
- Speed Up boot time
- Better wi-fi support
- ...

In fact, these ideas are good ideas and everyone will vote for. But little ideas but good ideas are hidden because can't obtain same scores.

We can vote "for" or "against" an idea. We could clic on a "too logical" button and if "too logical" have a important score we hide this ideas. A visitor could watch all ideas, but by defaut done and "too logical" should be hides.

Focus on 64-bit desktop system
Written by evil the 5 Mar 08 at 14:35. Global category: Hardware support. In development
Make installation of 64-bit on desktop easier. There are many obstructions such a Flash, Opera, Skype etc. And many MANY others...

Many users still use 32-bit Ubuntu just because they scare - complicated setup of 64-bit means less users > Less desktop users means less topics at support phorums > less help > more (unsolved) problems for new 64-bit users.

All new computers are 64-bit (Intel/AMD). Be more oriented to new "standard" desktop computers and take the advantages!

Yes, it's a 64-bit world ;-)

Selected solution (#2): Install 64bit kerner and libraries on supported architectures
Written by dermoth the 19 Aug 09 at 17:05.
The 64-bit version of Ubuntu should be dropped or used as a 64-bit only architecture. 64bit for normal users should be part of the 32bit distribution.

64bit main advantage is the ability to address much more RAM, OTOH x86-64 architectures runs 32bit code natively. 32bit code for most application if enough, and often better since the memory requirement is lower (64bit code makes pointers twice as large).

Therefore users installing the 32bit Ubuntu on a 64bit machine should receive a 64bit kernel and toolchain with most of the userland running in 32bit (plus basic 64bit libraries). Some demanding applications like audio/video encoders or database could install in 64bit by default whenever possible to allow using faster 64bit instructions or addressing more RAM.

Solaris on SPARC has been doing this for many years, and Fedora recently took that direction as well.

Ubuntu Brainstorm for each country. The other non-English-speaking.
Written by nq6 the 2 Mar 08 at 01:41. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. New
That the Ubuntu Brainstorm was a fantastic idea nobody doubts, the more it is accessible only to people who speak English. I think every parent, or should have yours. China, Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, Arabic, Greek, and other non-English-speaking countries.

That would be great, because everyone could participate suggesting their ideas without the limitation of language. It would also be very good for Canonical know what users think of each country.

If the Ubuntu distro wants to be an international, and be dedicated to all with simplicity. It should eliminate this barrier.

I suggest that initially the countries below has its own Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Brazil
Russia
Japan
Greece
Italy
Spain
Germany
China
Korea
France
Netherlands
Arab Countries

Solution #2: Delegate Language-Local Brainstorms
Written by pubsbin the 5 Apr 09 at 09:08.
I propose to create, for every language, an "special local brainstorm" similar to this one.

This "local brainstorms" would not be at the same level of the central one, this one. Instead, they would be delegate branches of the main brainstorm for the users of one language.

Every LB would have a set of local administrators who, from time to time, would translate the most significant ideas from the local branch to the global brainstorm (that would remain written in English).

Therefore, the ideas in a local branch would never be global ideas until a "local administrator" creates a new idea, as it is actually done, in the global one. Also, it could be desirable to say "how many users of this language approve that idea".

Similarly, "local" ideas would be linked to those "global" ideas that represent the same feature-enhancement.

Solution #3: Auto translate
Written by Gerwin the 8 Apr 09 at 09:28.
Let something like "Google translate" translate the website, And if someone hovers over the text in his or her language it will show the original,

This way everyone can propose a idea in there own language and read all ideas in there own language.

And if there is a open source implementation of something like 'Google translate" lets use that. So we can improve it. Allow people that speak the original language of the idea to propose better translations. This way The translating will improve over time.

Solution #4: Volunteer Translators
Written by pcgaldo the 16 Nov 08 at 01:06.
Create a new Brainstorm section to publish untranslated ideas, arranged by languages. Once an idea has been translated it can be transferred to the English Brainstorm main page.

Solution #5: make brainstorm multilingial
Written by dinar the 10 Jan 10 at 12:44.
i write this after i read http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3150/ and have written a comment in it and write that comment as idea solution.
you can make both join focus in one site and other languages this way: make it multilingual, with checkboxes to filter and show ideas in several languages that user understands and do not see which he do not understand. users that know 2 or more languages can report duplicates. i think solutions and comments to idea must be in same languages as main part - rationale and header. then may be implemented more complex way: ability to add translation of idea and solutions to other language and make possible comments in that other languages and ability also see only comments in selected languages or see all but highlite comments in understandable language.
(i have written this as idea, it has been marked as duplicate and now i write this here.)

Solution #6: Dynamic Translation
Written by ChrisB the 23 Feb 10 at 20:31.
When browsing the forums/brainstorm (as a logged in user) the website should know your native/preferred language.

All text will then (if needed) be translated in to that language. Any text they write/post can be written/posted in their language, but when viewed by a user with a different native/preferred language, the post will be translated in to their language.

This should be done at a server level (with preferably an open source translation tool). A web interface should also be available to switch individual posts automatically translated between the translation and the original.

This will remove the need for posting rules regarding language and make ubuntu more available to users of all browsers and languages.

Microsoft Office 100% Compatibility
Written by etniesbmx the 29 Feb 08 at 01:17. Global category: Office. Not an idea
Although there are great alternatives to Microsoft Office such as Open Office, sometimes when viewing/editing documents between the two programs, the formatting and other small details do not match exactly.

When I am working with someone who only uses only Microsoft Office, I want to be sure that we are looking at EXACTLY the same document. MS Office is very widely used, and therefore I think that 100% compatibility between MS Office and some word processor (or wine) on Ubuntu is important.

Column view in Nautilus (Finder-like)
Written by claudiodsf the 13 Mar 08 at 15:24. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
In Mac OSX Finder, this view displays the hierarchy of the file system in a series of left-to-right panes: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Tiger/Using_the_Finder#Column_View

I find it terribly useful when you have a deep structured directory hierarchy, especially when you want to move a file several levels up.

Solution #3: Only as plugin
Written by lootic the 27 Feb 10 at 14:39.
Nautilus works fine and have a lot of features as it is, tabbed browsing and the way the address bar is now is more than enough for many users, adding stuff slows down in general and nautilus already happens to be kinda slow. Having features you don't use is a con. Thus only as plugin if implemented.

Support MP3 and DIVX on default installation
Written by dennyxx82 the 1 Mar 08 at 09:58. Global category: Installation. Implemented
That could happen after installation of ubuntu does not have an internet connection, I find it very annoying not to have software that reads divx and mp3. We could install VideoLan default or Gstreamer plug-in
