It would be nice if the volume and mute buttons on our multimedia keyboard would work even when the screensaver is locked. Or at least make an option for this.
When listening to music around the house, usually the screensaver comes on within a few minutes. Its password protected because we have a five-year-old. If we get a phone call and its up too loud that means we have to input a password just to turn down the volume so we can hear the phonecall.
This would also probably be a good idea for an office environment if someone leaves their desk unattended and their colleagues need to turn their system volume down for some reason.

As a web developer I'd love to see an easy way to mount FTP drives. For Windows XP there is NetDrive, which makes life much easier for me.
I know it's possible to mount a FTP drive by installing some packages and editing fstab, but I haven't been able to successfully do this. Even though I've tried several howtos.
I'm pretty good with computers, to my humble opinion, so if I can't get it to work there must be more people wanting this...
A real monospaced console/terminal/system-like font.
A real hard-core ASCII hacker font. So when you open GNOME Terminal or something, you can have the same font as Ctrl+Alt+F2.
Very good, clean, easy to read font, good for programming too.

When I start the Ubuntu LiveCD and my keyboard or mouse isn't detected that is very annoying. We cannot expect people to know shortcut keys to start a mouse, or how to turn the on-screen keyboard on.

Right now when an application is installed in Synaptic, all the dependencies of the application are automatically installed. However, when the same application is uninstalled, only the application itself is uninstalled by Synaptic; all the dependencies of the application that were automatically installed by Synaptic are left intact.
The only way to remove the automatically installed dependencies is to run sudo apt-get autoremove from the command line.
Synaptic should provide an option to remove the automatically installed dependencies that were installed with an application when that application is being uninstalled using Synaptic.
Having a user drop to the command line to achieve this is not acceptable especially for new users.

Currently, you can only put in a static ip when you have manually entered the SSID, etc. You should be able to have a static ip while being able to select which network to connect to in wireless mode.

Won't implement
Give users the ability "hate" other users. When you "hate" another user, you automatically vote against anything posted by that user.
I think that allowing users to "love" other users would mean encouraging the creation of fictitious accounts that automatically support each other, so I am not suggesting it.
