Volume control (for muting sounds) in GDM
Written by mateusza the 1 Mar 08 at 12:36. Global category: System. Implemented
Having login sound is nice, but sometimes we boot our laptop during the lecture or a meeting and we want it to be absolutely quiet.

There should be a volume control or just a "mute" button in GDM Login window.

Selected solution (#2): Make a checkbox in Sound
Written by dsterry the 20 Oct 10 at 21:49.
I propose that a single checkbox be placed in the Sound applet that would disable System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> GNOME Login Sound as well as uncheck System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> play login sound. The login screen applet requires root privileges to make changes so I expect this checkbox would require the same.

Selected solution (#3): Also resolve Idea #3870
Written by ninjagecko the 12 Jul 11 at 21:11.
This idea deals specifically with logging in; the only possible sources of sound at login are the login sound.

However "booting our laptop during lecture/meeting and wanting it to be quiet" is NOT just an issue with the GDM login. It is also an issue with standby/suspend and screen-locker, and *THAT* issue is addressed in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3870/

GIT support for Nautilus/Thunar (as a extension)
Written by mateusza the 1 Mar 08 at 13:47. Global category: Others. New
Files inside repository should have extra emblems showing if they're modified or added until last commit. Also extra menu items for committing, reverting, viewing history, merging, branching, pulling, pushing should appear when browsing inside project directory.

(Like in Tortoise SVN for Windows)

This could also be done for Subversion, CVS, Mercurial and others.

Selected solution (#2): Use .exe's icon, but put a Wine emblem on it
Written by Endolith the 17 Jan 09 at 22:40.
I think we should have the full-size icon be the icon extracted from the .exe, but also add a Wine emblem to show that it will be run through Wine.

Here's a mock-up of what I'm imagining:

Then if the .exe is associated with some other helper application, like CrossOver, it could have an emblem for that instead.

Selected solution (#3): This is already done and working, include it Ubuntu!!
Written by qb89dragon the 20 Jul 09 at 03:39.
Here is an easy step-by-step guide to make nautilus show wine icons.

http://www.objectnetworks.net/wiki/index.php?title=Exe_icon_for_Gnome

Ubuntu devs, please make this gnome mime-type be included by default. It has nothing to do with wine and everything to do with nautilus, it's install footprint is small. Just do it!

Network Manager plugin for WvDial connections
Written by mateusza the 6 Mar 08 at 23:05. Global category: System. New
Some people ask for "any type of connection", but my idea is to simply allow user to start a predefined WvDial connection from NetworkManager menu.

Checking MD5 sums from GNOME file properties dialog
Written by mateusza the 1 Mar 08 at 12:05. Global category: System. New
Why not expand GNOME file properties dialog to include field with file's MD5 sum? For big files (in example >1MB) this may be computed only on demand (pressing a button).

Windows users have http://www.beeblebrox.org/hashtab/

Solution #2: Show checksum in file properties window
Written by srippon the 7 Jun 09 at 02:47.
Calculate and show the MD5 checksum (and other checksums) in the file properties window.

File properties window with checksum info.

On the 'Basic' tab under the 'Modified' information have a dropdown menu that contains different checksum algorithm names.
Depending on which algorithm is selected the non-editable field will populate with the checksum value.
If the calculation takes a little bit of time some text should display in the field to say something like "Calculating...".

Selecting checksum algorithm.

By default Ubuntu should have whatever the most popular algorithm selected. Would this be MD5?

The system should also remember if the user changes to a different algorithm so that if they report that (or another) file's properties that algorithm will be displayed.

Under the checksum field have an input field with a label 'Compare with:'.
If the clipboard contains a value in it before the properties window is opened automatically paste this value into this field.

Checksum vales match.

Checksum vales dont match.

If both fields are the same show a green tick to the left of these two fields to indicate they are the same.
If they are different show a large red cross to the left of these two fields to indicate they are not the same.
The tooltip for the tick and cross could be:

The two values are the same.
The two values are not the same.

If the values are not the same some text should also appear under the two fields to suggest what is wrong. For example:

File may not have downloaded/copied correctly and may contain errors.

Local Maildir and mbox support in Thunderbird
Written by mateusza the 8 Mar 08 at 11:59. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I'd like to access my local Maildir-style or mbox-style mailboxes directly from Thunderbird, without using any IMAP or POP3 wrapper.

Why?

1. Accessing by POP3/IMAP means having copies of messages somewhere in TB's profile directory.

2. Accessing by POP3/IMAP needs providing password to account I'm already logged in!

3. Sometimes we have backup of mail from server and want to read it without moving or coping it to local mailbox.

Billing feature for WvDial
Written by mateusza the 6 Mar 08 at 23:11. Global category: System. New
Give WvDial billing feature for logging connection times and bytecounts and store it in some text file or SQLite DB. Allow user define tariffs and billing rules to estimate costs of dial-up and radio packet connections.
