Update manager displays updates requiring a restart
Written by lukesandberg the 28 Aug 08 at 01:11. Category: Others. Related to: Update manager. New
One of the nice things in the system update utility for OS X is that if any of the updates require a reboot then it displays an icon notifying the user of this. This way I could always cherry pick updates that wouldn't interrupt my work.

This should be fairly trivial from a UI perspective (i don't know how difficult it would be to implement)

Make .bin installers launch by double clicking them
Written by jonian_g the 26 Aug 08 at 12:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many games come with a .bin file, like savage2, quake4, world of padman etc. But if you want to install them you have to open a terminal, then cd path_to_file and ./filename.bin.
It would be nice if the installer started by double clicking it.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Render "large" SVGs to fit in the browser, like PNGs do
Written by Warbo the 28 Aug 08 at 05:13. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Epiphany. New
When a gecko-based browser opens a PNG which is too big for the window it can be shrunk to fit, with successive clicks on the image changing the size from normal to fitted.

It would be good to have this ability with SVGs, since an SVG is meant to be size and resolution independent anyway. SVGs with large default dimensions are currently annoying to view (for example http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/77/Unix_history-simple.svg ). Implementation in a click-to-change-zoom way would be difficult for interactive SVGs, hence I think always rendering to fit in the browser window is best.

PS: I'd say the question of scaling up SVGs designed to be small is out of scope for this idea. I think SVGs with dimensions smaller than the browser window should rendered with those dimensions.

Make Wubi Distro Agnostic
Written by DanRabbit the 27 Aug 08 at 13:16. Category: Installation. Related to: Wubi Windows installer. New
I know that we want to have a leg up over other distro's in order to "be the best." But, it would a nice thing for the community if Wubi worked for any bootable .ISO

I'm not sure exactly how Wubi works, and if this is even possible. But, if we could do it, it would help spread desktop Linux quite a bit.

"Not planning to do X" should not be a reason to close an idea.
Written by csahin the 27 Aug 08 at 15:56. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
An idea "do X" shouldn't be closed just because "There are no plans to do X." This is the case for idea #525: make thunderbird the default email client.

How can the community describe its wants and needs if the admins close ideas just because Canonical is not planning to change something the community clearly wants.

Share photo's with F-spot
Written by frup the 26 Aug 08 at 08:50. Category: Graphics. Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager. New
F-spot is getting half decent. It's actually one of my favourite apps oddly enough but it has lots of room to improve.

I propose an easy way to share photo's/albums over a local area network for example. This could be done using something like bonjour similar to how frostwire and itunes can share music libraries over the network.

The reason I suggest this is that my brother and I often go places together and one of us will carry a video camera while the other one is snapping photos, instead of both of us having to set up and tag the same photos twice it would be nice for one of us to do it and then both open F-spot on our laptops and easily share, I have tons of photo's of him he would be interested in if only he could browse them.

When you have 6 people in your family all using Ubuntu at different locations this is a small feature that is very desirable.

Fix Suspend and Hibernate   forum

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

There has been a lot of positive talk in the past about replacing Pidgin with a better client that uses Telepathy but now there's one that looks like it's almost ready to do that! Empathy ( http://live.gnome.org/Empathy ) has much more potential than Pidgin since Empathy uses Telepathy ( http://telepathy.freedesktop.org ). Although i don't think Empathy is quite ready for this in Intrepid, it certainly will be for the next release.

(If you'd like to give it a try, don't use the old version in the Hardy repos, look here: http://cass.no-ip.com/~cassidy/blog/index.php/post/2008/04/14/Voice-and-video-c alls-with-Empathy )

The fact that Empathy uses Telepathy to manage all the different protocols it supports is what makes it so great. Why is it that Pidgin supports file transfers on AIM but not Jabber? Why can't i use VoIP to talk to my Google Talk friends in Pidgin?

Empathy will enable more desktop integration, better support for multiple protocols, and a happier user :)

The bottom line is that Empathy has been making much more progress and improving much faster than Pidgin thanks to Telepathy and including it in Ubuntu will only help the process along!

Major Update! Empathy is now part of Gnome-- http://blog.ibeentoubuntu.com/2008/08/gnome-has-empathy-for-you.html

add support for atheros wifi drivers in ibex
Just released linux wifi open drivers by atheros should be included in next ibex version which focuses on better wifi.
http://madwifi.org/wiki/news/20080725/ath9k-atheros-unveils-free-linux-driver-f or
The ath9k driver includes supports for the following chipsets:

* AR5416+AR5133
* AR5416+AR2133
* AR9160
* AR9280
* AR9281
These should be available in ibex as intrepid ibex concentrates on better wifi support.

So I right-clicked on a file and selected "Cut" in the context menu.
So that I later could "Paste" the file into another directory.

Make so that when you select "Cut" on a file, the icon becomes dimmed.
Because right now, there are no visual indication, so you don't know it worked.
In Windows there is a visual notification by the icon becoming dimmed.
In Ubuntu there is no visual notification, the icon does not become dimmed. This is confusing.

Encourage Users to work with Free Sotfware Formats
Written by retj the 5 Aug 08 at 17:28. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.

Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:

- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs

- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.

This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.

FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

Run an application from System Monitor
Written by elmoj the 4 Aug 08 at 16:00. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
the problem: Sometime the gnome-panel hangs...

If I close with the system monitor, it's impossible (for me) to execute it another time.

It's possibly to have a Run Option on System Monitor, like Windows has?

Thanks a lot, and, as always, excuse my poor english.

Make the default web browser, really default
Written by jonian_g the 3 Aug 08 at 01:23. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I do a fresh install of ubuntu the first thing I install is opera web browser and I set it as my default browser.

But still, programs that want to use the browser, use firefox. Even .htm and .html files open with firefox.

So it would be nice when setting a web browser as the default to be default for everything that needs a web browser.

nautilus thumbnailing via network
Written by ways the 5 Aug 08 at 09:46. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nautilus CD/DVD Creator. New
when browsing another machine via the network, nautilus should be able to ask host machine for thumbnails, instead of fetching large pictures, and creating thumbnails itself.

this only applies if host also runs nautilus.

Volume Applet Quick Mute
Written by SelrahCharleS the 5 Aug 08 at 06:40. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
In Gnome the Volume control Applet allows you to raise and lower the volume by hovering the mouse pointer over the applet and scrolling up and down. I find this feature very useful, but I often middle click(mouse3) to mute and then realize that doesn't work. Currently the only way to do that is to right click and then click on the mute checkbox.

I think middle clicking on the applet should mute the speakers. The scrolling for volume adjustment was well thought out, but a quick mute via middle click would make muting much faster and would feel more polished.

make Gnome-app-install more like iPhone's app store
Written by DanRabbit the 14 Aug 08 at 22:27. Category: System. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
Once again, Apple didn't invent anything new (software repos) but they sure showed us how to do it the right way! Not only is iPhone's app store is beautifully simple, it features detailed descriptions, screenshots, reviews, ratings, and more without being overwhelming or cluttered.

It allows you to see the "Top 25" applications downloaded by users at the moment, A selection for the newest applications, and ones that are being specially featured by Apple. And, because of the iTunes account, it's also extremely easy to purchase applications without having to re-enter credit card information or anything like that.

Now, imagine what a desktop implementation of that is going to look like in the next version of OS X. Or, don't imagine it. Build it for Ubuntu first. Take gnome-app-install and beef it up with some of the before-mentioned features. Revise the rating system so that we can actually RATE something. Add paypal support (or something equivalent), so that we can donate to specific projects from our desktops without hunting around their website. And make it beautiful and simple, so that it will be a major selling point for new users.
