It could be dangerous for my stats... but I need to mention that...
In real world 90% of PCs are using Windows, nowadays fewer people use it because of vista, but Windows XP is dangerous..
This idea propose to create a place where the people can tell us, "What things are using, and likes about windows". There, we can see the real things that the people wants, things that Ubuntu does, o doesn't do.
"The Windows eXPeriencie". People like things that are more easy to do, and more beautiful to see in Windows, these things We know, but not all things, simply things that we don't think.
Remember, don´t kill me, be "open", open your mind and remember it, UBUNTU is for human people, then, is neccessary that Ubuntu be easy and intuitive like Windows is for donkeys.
Easy like Windows XP (never Vista XD), beautiful like Apple, someday..it will be Ubuntu.
PD: Ubuntu have things better that Windows, but the people have to say what things they like them, because the people don't know what things have o no Ubuntu and GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu "LiveFLASH" for onboard chips (inside motherboards, laptops)

Some producers of motherboards & laptops are preparing new models with onboard FLASH chip 512MB, containing Linux mini-distribution Splashtop. http://www.splashtop.com
It will be able to boot small Linux just from board, independently external medium (HDD), utilization is for HW examination, dividing HDD partitions and emergency internet acces (browsing web, im).
Example: ASUS Express Gate
http://www.techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?newsid=101513
Let's build similar alternative from UBUNTU - modify and reduce classic LiveCD to "LiveFLASH" 512MB, and moreover to Splashtop Linux, retain a possibility to make full installation of Ubuntu to HDD from onboard FLASH (same way as from LiveCD)!
Let's offer this system to producers (DELL, ASUS, ...).
(Maybe also 1GB onboard Flash chip => full LiveCD ... heureka! )

You might say this is "pie in the sky" idea, but its not.
Plus its something that I kinda know how to do it (I study political science).
You have two major options:
1) Gather as much of Ubuntu community in your country then go to the governing party or party for which you think that its ideology is most similar to ideology of Ubuntu and GNU/Linux.
And propose to that party that when governmental and computers of public services will be change they should not install Windows on it, but instead Ubuntu, also provide them with all the technical help to maintain this computers (you'll even earn money for doing that). You have to present to them that Ubuntu is totally for free and it's simple enough to be used on daily basis even in so important places as government is. Also present them that Linux is more secure than Windows.
2) You don't need to connect yourself with any party just apply your "company" next time the government will update its system. Because you'll be the cheapest you'll probably win. If not you can still complain (as is a big part of our political culture in Slovenia). If you still don't get chosen you probably live in undemocratic or corrupt country and should start demonstrations against government and demand democracy ( :D ).
I know I'll propose that idea on Ubuntu Slovenia forum, what about you???

Enterprise Readiness: Oracle Database on the Server

I work for a rather large corporation and I'm currently taking a look at Linux as an option for our enterprise deployments.
I was surprised to learn that Oracle Databases don't run on Ubuntu/Debian.
This might not be of particular interest to the hobbyist/desktop crowds (yes, I know there's MySQL and all the rest, but this is not the question...),
This will be an important step forward if Ubuntu wants to break into "big business" server rooms...

Whe you click a window, the title bar changes (color, transparency, etc) to show that the window is active. The theme should be able to change the interface the same way
This way, you can do themes that has no diference between the border of the window and the content of the window (like OSX does)
Right now, if you do the border like the content, as soon as you click the windows the border will be diferent

Add user oriented metapackages to ubuntu

This idea would consist in defining user oriented meta packages and add them to ubuntu repositories.
For instance :
we could define a scientific meta package consisting in :
- scilab
- octave
- maxima
- lyx
- R
- (...)
we could define a kids meta package consisting in :
- gnome games.
- educational software (dr geo, celestia, Mr potatoes...)
- a kids adapted gnome look and feels (or more than one, as kids will sooner or later change everything)
- dansguardian.
we could define a graphical designer meta package consisting in :
- Xara
- InkScape
- Blender
- The Gimp
- (...)
a developper meta package, and so on...
a meta package would only consist merely in depedencies (i suppose this is already the case for ubuntu-desktop or edubuntu-desktop, or kubuntu-desktop...), and simply ease the construction of a base system. [....]

Disassociate Ubuntu from "Linux pride"

"Linux pride" in the title is meant in the similar way as "white pride".
I don't mean it in the way: "I'm proud to use Linux"
I mean it in the way: "Linux is from geeks for geeks" or something like that...
--------------
A lot of Linux users think they are better then all other OS users. And some of them even want to secure their "geek" position by demanding ubuntu shouldn't be easy for first time users. I think this is against the Ubuntu philosophy "towards humanity" and "Linux for human beings".
So all of you who are voting ideas down, because they want to make Ubuntu easier for first time users, please don't.
I'm not trying to troll or starting a flamewar, I'm trying to give constructive critics.
This dosen't mean make Ubuntu like MAC OS or god forbid Vista,
it just means make ubutnu the most user friendly Linux, that goes for all of other flavours of ubuntu to.
---------------------------------------------
The fame of Linux pride, "linux is for G33ks go back to Windoze if you don't like it N00b" is what is keeping a large portion of users that want to change their OS.
So let us all promote Ubuntu as new user fiendly OS, and think about ideas how to make it even more friendler as it already is

Right now, Wubi allows Windows users to install Ubuntu and, if they no longer need it, uninstall it. However, there is no way to easily uninstall Windows if it is no longer needed any more.
I propose that an item be created in Add/Remove that allows all Windows components to be removed, including having the Windows boot loader replaced entirely by GRUB, leaving the fully functioning Ubuntu installed on an NTFS partition.

I recently wanted to get more involved in the development of my favourite open source projects (including Xubuntu). But often I found the only way to get involved was a mailing list. When I signed up for the mailing lists I was surprised just how clunky and unintuitive they were compared to internet forums, and how little functionality they had. Plus there is something about communicating directly via email like that which is very intimidating to a new user.
In this day and age of several open source forum/messageboard systems with features coming out of their ears, all with email subscription controls and probably RSS feeds too, why are developers still using the antiquated, frankly crappy mailing lists of old?
It seems like its such a traditional, ingrained thing to use mailing lists if you are an open source developer that they all keep using them even when there are better solutions out there.
I would like to see more projects making use of more modern, sophisticated tools. I am talking about forums here but perhaps it could be something else all together, I'm not really up on what is out there for collaborations and communication, but whatever you use it certainly doesn't need to be a mailing list with it's ugly text email with zero functionality besides getting your inbox filled with conversations better suited to a forum thread.
If it sounds like I am just moaning then you are missing the point, that if you had an attractive, easy to use forum with different catagories for different suggestions and development topics then you would get sooooo many more people joining in.
Ditch mailing lists, they suck!

Help to develop Gnome 3

Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]

time compression and dilation feature for playing mp3's
|

The Windows Media Player has the feature of time compression and time dilation.
With the time compression feature a mp3, wma, or another music file is played faster/quicker.
A music file which normally would take about 3 minutes to play, is than going to play for just 2 or 1 minute.
The time dilation features is the opposite: is plays a music file slower. A music file which normally would take about 3 minutes to play, is than going to play for just 4 minutes or so.
These are nice features for users. I like the features of time compression a lot. Already known songs are just more interesting to hear.
It would be nice if Totem or Amarok or another player is able to do that. Even better: intergrate the feature in a commonly used sound-component, so that every player is capable of time compression or time dilation feature.

Implenment DBFS!

Database-oriented filesystems is the future of file storage & management. These are filesystems, that use tags instead of (or in addition to) hierarchical directory structure.
This is more flexible and rather more natural way of storage and managing documents in the digital environment.
It moves away from obsolete imitation of paperwork and opens great powers of digital environment, that was still covered by society thinking inertia.
It it does not treat digital documents as material objects. It does not accent on document's place, but accents on the document itself, giving user the ways of control documents without unnecessary intermediaries.
Example of flexibility: you have some multimedia file, for example video, that contains music track. In classical fs you need to choose between your music & video folders, or make links. In datsbase fs you just tag it with both, add titles... in result, dualistic nature of that file is no more a problem, but fully reflected in filesystem.
...or if you want quickly browse photos & videos, along with texts, made between 1st July and 2nd August, related to your vacation, but in Rome, not Paris, and about night parties?
And every file with its metadata is portable!
Some you-know-which commercial OSs working in this direction with their "WinFS" & "Spotlight"...
We have a chance to win the race!
dbfs is now in development...
*And it already has a KDE interface!*
So it would be great if Ubuntu support it & help with development!
Further info & "kdbfs" interface is here:

Hire thousand of Chinese programmers

Canonical should hire a legion of tens of thousands of Chinese programmers.
It will be very cheap, and Chinese people are very intelligent and hard workers. Always top A grade students, perfect score on all tests.
In China people work 20 hours a day for only like $2 dollar a day.
We can employ them for only 6-9 hours a day with a great salary of $5-10 dollar per day.
It will be a great deal for them, because they can work less and earn more.
It will be great for us, because we can hire tens of thousand Chinese programmers, a whole legion of them and increase the development rate by a factor of a thousand.

It would be great if there was also a brainstorm.ubuntu.com/videos so that instead of posting just text ideas, developers and users had 1 minute (using youtube), to flaunt their concept over video, to ensure that users could actually see which improvements are brought about.
ADVANTAGES
- Some ideas are better understood over video, where users can see a prototype in action, or flow charts and such with explanation.
- Higher quality of ideas. You will find that only serious users will bother making video's of their ideas. And it helps guarentee that people have a lot more to work off then just their word. You can actually see the idea.
- If Youtube is used as the backend, there is no extra load.
- Humans deal with video presentations with both pictures, text and audio a lot better, then paragraphs. The problem with paragraphs, is that people tune out.
DISADVANTAGES
- All videos would need to be premodded before posting to ensure they aren't porn. However, as only serious users would make a proper video, I doubt that there would be thousands of hours to mod a day, expecially if they were capped at 1 minute.

Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.
There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.
It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.
Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

Personally, I don't like the way Ubuntu installs/uninstalls programs.
I come from using win98, winME, winXP, and microsoft's worst work vista. So I'm used to double clicking the setup files to install. Ubuntu doesn't have that as far as I've seen.
So I think they should add this to Ubuntu or make a tool to allow this.

A Too to Repair permissions

Excuse me for the typo in the title, it's, of course, a "TOOL" ;-)
I actually had a big problem last time I reinstalled: backuping my documents and files on a USB key, I reinstalled the OS.
But when I copied the whole thing on my new /home partition, every preferences folder had its permissions changed, so that no application would actually start.
I had to repair every single folder with its good permissions, which took me at least 3 hours.
Could we have a tool to repair the permissions all over the system, so that this kind of burden would be avoided (and it could probably speed up the system a little, if it repaired everything correctly)
