Email GPS coordinates of stolen computer with GDM
Written by Auzy the 19 Sep 08 at 09:00. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many phones these days have GPS built in, and as the cost of chips drop, it becomes even more likely that gps will be built into peoples laptops (or offered as a custom option).

I propose that in the case an incorrect password is typed in, the GPS coordinates are emailed out to a designated email address. This would be done discreetly, as not to arouse suspicion, and would allow accurate enough information for the laptop to be recovered (especially if the laptop has a 3G wireless card built in).

This idea is an enhancement of Take webcam pictures of failed logins. Brands which have GPS chips built in would also quickly become well known as not being "robber-friendly".

Give new life to symlinks.
Written by vexorian the 3 Mar 08 at 17:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I really hope for a day in which Nautilus, Konqueror and Thunar would have a good interface for making up your own symlinks, if you ask symbolic links are a very useful unix feature, specially if you are running out of space in one partition, make lending space easier, and some times you do need duplicated versions of the same folder in different places.

Just a "symlink" command in the "new" submenu would work, you can make it only work with folders if you want. Symlinks are SO useful, still in the GUI era, take a look at icon themes, for example.

Xubuntu should use xfmedia, not gstreamer
Written by psquared89 the 6 Jul 08 at 16:48. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Xubuntu. New
Currently, the only multimedia apps installed by xubuntu are brasero and totem. Totem is only a movie player; while it can play mp3s, it's not designed to function a music player, and is not easy to use as one.

Xfmedia is a true media player, and can handle both music and movies. It's part of the xfce desktop and is lighter weight than totem. I don't understand why it isn't part of the xubuntu install.

A popular idea seen on brainstorm a lot lately is keeping ubuntu, especially xubuntu as lightweight as possible. Using xfmedia would go a long way towards achieving that goal.

Make xubuntu more lite
Written by alpikat the 5 Jul 08 at 22:25. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Xubuntu. New

I think Xubuntu, despite being the lite version of ubuntu is too heavy, I think it could do still more light, for example, could use a theme that does not consume so many resources, not to use default background image, a special version of firefox, openoffice, gimp .... just for this distribution, it would be a tough job but I think that with the help of the entire community and eager to do them and get Xubuntu is the best choice for pc little ones.

Disable font hinting by default
Written by zarlino the 28 Feb 08 at 13:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If you're not a graphic artist, you probably don't know what this means. To be short: the practical effect is that you fonts look smoother, like the Mac OS X fonts.

Also, most fonts look very bad with hinting enabled, virtually only Vera/DejaVu has acceptable results, while most other fonts are not usable.

This is very easy to implement: it is just a true/false value in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
You can also set it per user in your ~/.fonts.conf by pasting this snippet:

false

(Affects only newly started applications)

Artists and eye candy people, make your voice heard!

Integrate Update Manager, Synaptic, and Gdebi into one interface
Written by tebibyte the 13 Jul 08 at 23:36. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Ubuntu has 4 different GUI applications that manage packages. Each provides similar but different functionality. These utilities should be combined in a unified interface to eliminate the appearance of bloat, while providing an all in one center for all your package managing needs.

If you want to update the system while installing new software, you can do them together. Gdebi packages can be easily installed with other software from the repositories. Users won't have to open multiple interfaces for similar tasks, streamlining operation in Ubuntu.

Remove Xubuntu as obsoleted
Written by Ape the 25 Apr 08 at 18:51. Category: System. Related to: Xubuntu. New
According to my tests Xubuntu is now slower than Ubuntu. In the newest version(gutsy and hardy) Gnome has reached the lightness of Xfce and it's now even faster. In the addition it's very hard to do things with Xubuntu.

No one should use Xubuntu anymore. It's old, it's not good. Xubuntu should be removed from the official Ubuntu variations as obsoleted.

Vintage-Windows*
Written by defaulter the 22 Aug 08 at 15:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

Sincirely Yours, Defaulter

hottest ubuntu girl contest
Written by nerfle the 22 Aug 08 at 02:54. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Randomly I'm thinking about some Digg article about having hot girls associated with firefox and other software to make that software more appealing to use. Then I thought about another article one Digg talking about a lot of the girls on Digg are fake.

So I was thinking there should be a hottest ubuntu girl contest! With girls who are NOT fake and actually USE ubuntu! I guess that would be hard to figure out if they truly use ubuntu or not but just thought it'll be an interesting idea.

Perhaps associating ubuntu with a hot chick will attract a bit more people. Just thought it'd be an interesting idea. Plus I'm curious to see the results ;) ...Or frightened.

To Include the plugin "IE Tab" in Firefox 3
Written by catalania the 21 Aug 08 at 00:18. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Firefox. New
Hi! I ask to include the plugin "IE Tab" in Firefox 3 in Ubuntu 8.10.

https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/firefox/addon/1419

Reason? IE is a bad web explorer, but our politicians do not know it. Why? because in my case, in Spain, the Public Administration ONLY work in Internet Explorer, when I want to watch my personal information in the University, I need IE, when I have to send information (form) by the website of the ministry of X (jod, culture, education, industry...), I need IE!!! oh my good!! WHY??? WTF!!! Firefox doesn't work well, o directly, doesn't work.

If we want that everybody (at less in Spain) install Ubuntu in their PC, and they can work well, we need this (a lot of people don't know that this plugin exist!!).

Totem should remember where the movie was interrupted when it is reloaded
Written by antistress the 3 Mar 08 at 01:53. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I really like GNOME functionalities that allow me to begin again where i left before.

For instance, when i load a PDF file in Evince, start the reading, close Evince and reload the PDF file, the document shows the page where i stopped the reading and not the beginning of the document.
Same with OpenOffice documents, Tomboy...

But Totem, like Dory in Finding Nemo, doesn't remember what it was doing before !
Load a movie, watch one hour. Close Totem. Reload the movie in Totem and you will restart from the begining... too bad!

Totem should remember where the movie was interrupted when the same movie is reloaded

Right-Click a file in Nautilus to select 'burn to disc'
Written by xVx the 9 Aug 08 at 10:13. Category: Others. Related to: Nautilus. New
This is a very useful feature i know from Mac OS X. You don't need to startup a burn app or add a disc first. In Mac OS X you select the files you want to burn, then the window tells you how much space you need on the disc.

This is a feature that I had to google to know how to activate it! It really looks good and is not needed too much resourses (My PC has 8mb on the video card and runs just fine) for those who wants to try it,open gconf-editor: apps/metacity/general/composite manager. This feature shoul be activated by default.

Use the notification area to really notify...
Written by ploum the 14 May 08 at 08:23. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The notification area original goal is to notify the user. Sadly, a lot of applications abuse it and use it as a simple icon dock (like under Windows).

This is a violation of the HIG ( http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/desktop-notification-area.html ), makes the notification area clutered and a lot less useful.

For people with no prior Windows experience, it also seems to be completely counter-intuitive and non understandable (why are some application there and some other in the panel).

I suggest to consider each abuse of the notification area a bug and that, by default, application use the notification area according to the HIG. (Gaim for example, can use the notification area only if you have a new message, which is the way the HIG recommands to use this feature).

Progressively eliminate binary blobs
Written by Eldmannen the 10 May 08 at 17:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Binary blobs provide us with short-term convenience.
However, in the long run they are bad.

We should strive to progressively eliminate binary blobs. One blob at a time.
The inclusion of binary blobs are sending the wrong signals. It is not something we should encourage.

If the amount of binary blobs grow then I think that is very dangerous.

* Blobs cannot be supported by developers.
* Blobs cannot be fixed by developers.
* Blobs cannot be improved.
* Blobs cannot be audited
* Blobs are specific to an architecture, thus less portable.
* Blobs are quite often massively bloated.

Blobs can contain malicious code and backdoors and you may never know. You cant trust them.

Inclusion of blobs are sacrificing our values.

It is giving up essential freedom to purchase a little temporary convenience.
Pleasant in the short-term but bad in the long term.
