Firefox EULA
Written by tacone the 14 Sep 08 at 19:21. Category: Installation. Related to: Firefox. Not an idea
In the nearing Intrepid release, Firefox display an EULA to the user the first time it is started.

This raises a number of concerns:
- the EULA refusal doesn't prevent the user in any way from using Firefox, therefore EULA's is just noise added to the user experience.
- the EULA agreement would make firefox a non-free application which should be moved to multiverse.
- refusing the EULA would (legally) leave the user without a browser in the default install.
- EULA approval on first start would make firefox less usable when using the Live CD.

So far the options are the following:

- Keeping firefox as it is, even with the EULA.
- Switch to Epiphany as the default webbrowser.
- Adopt IceWeasel from debian (which is firefox, with logo and brand replaced)

You can find the full discussion here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/269656

*** If you'd like to vote for keeping firefox as it is, vote this idea. ***

if you preferer to adopt IceWeasel vote this idea:

if you prefer to adopt Epiphany vote this idea:

Normalize system libraries by funtionality
Written by mangar the 19 May 08 at 13:55. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
clean boundaries between libraries, and normalized APIs can contribute a lot to the consistency of linux/foss development.

we can use the "kit" convention, as it seems like the general
direction things are going.

suggestion for kits:
webKit,
policyKit,
packgeKit,
consoleKit,
audioKit (

Use Thunar-thumbnailers in Nautilus
Written by erlend the 12 Apr 08 at 12:34. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
I maintain Thunar-thumbnailers (http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/thunar-plugins/thunar-thumbnailers) for the Thunar file manager. Thunar uses a very simple system to register new thumbnailers with the file manager, this is described: http://thunar.xfce.org/documentation/C/customizing-thunar.html#thumbnailers

A lot of brainstorm ideas mention the speed problems in Nautilus, particularly about thumbnail generation. There are some asking for more formats to be thumbnailed (such as OpenDocument). A lot of this has already been done in Thunar-thumbnailers: look for example at the supported formats on the link I posted.

Also, Nautilus is very very slow at generating thumbnails of JPEG images, because it reads the whole image and scales it down. Thunar just extracts the digital camera's thumbnail from the image and uses that.

An example of this speed difference is (benchmarked on an Intel core 2 duo), per thumbnail:
nautilus took about 2-3 seconds,
thunar did the whole directory faster than I could blink (it you want a number it's less than 1ms per thumbnail).

I think if everyone used and contributed to the same set of thumbnailers, a lot of effort would be saved and quality would improve.

Mozilla-firefox-adblock should be replaced by Adblock Plus in Ubuntu's repos.

Mozilla-firefox-adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/1865) should be replaced by Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)in Ubuntu's repositories because the Adblock isn't developed anymore (since 2004).

Commercial driver support for linux
Written by loki the 12 Apr 08 at 15:01. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Drivers must also be created by the hardware manufactures. Have you an idea to get this done?

Driver support is real good in linux these days. Onnly I can't help thinking this is only because the linux community is working hard to get it this way.

Don't get me wrong, I love Opensource and working on it at regular basis. But shouldn't the companies deliver their own drivers? even if they are not opensource? I mean, this way we keep running after the facts.

When buying a new product I always send an request for a linux driver to the sales department. I know this is not the right departement and they don't have a driver, but I think this is one way to remind them of linux. This way it gets around in the organisation.

Any suggestions how to get this done? (Reminder: This is a brainstorm section, no stupid ideas exist here).

Option to blank CD-RW's in Nautilus Burner
Written by lszanto the 3 Apr 08 at 10:16. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have found that whenever I am trying to blank a cd I have to go through all different programs to do so, I know Brasero is included in 8.04 which has this option but it would be a nifty feature to be able to quickly blank a cd in the nautilus burner.

Don't display "lost+found" folder in nautilus
Written by jonas_lindeloev the 3 Apr 08 at 08:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I propose to hide the folder in nautilus, when not in super-user mode.

On every partition ubuntu creates a "lost+found" folder for the purpose of recovering broken files during disk-checks, which happens very rarely. Nautilus won't let you browse the folder unless you are logged in as super-user. So all in all it's pretty useless (and actually quite confusing!) to the everyday user.

Update: thanks for comments. It seems that making "lost+found" a hidden folder by default would be a good solution to this problem. Continue voting :-)

Add Google Ads to Ubuntu websites to get marketing budget
Written by orvils the 4 Apr 08 at 08:35. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Let's add Google ads to Ubuntu websites so that we can get some additional money for marketing of Ubuntu. Advertising is not bad, it is everywhere and if these ads are unobtrusive usability and user experience will not suffer. But some additional money will definetly help the cause. Imagine free ubuntu stickers, T-shirts for the community or LoCo teams or profesional advertisments in TV. First we earn the money and then let the community decide how to spend it best.

All applications can use all file formats
Written by Eldmannen the 29 Feb 08 at 21:41. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
GIMP can open lots of file formats.
But Eye of GNOME can open less, why?
This is dumb.

I propose some kind of framework or library in the system that applications can use to access file formats.

This would make all applications be able to support all file formats, and would make it easier to code application software, because it would require less time and code since the developer wouldn't have to use different libraries and write support for file formats manually himself.

All audio software can handle all audio file formats.
All graphics software can handle all graphics file formats.
All video software can handle all video file formats.

Then I can download an update for the system library which adds support for new file formats, and suddenly my old applications gained support for new file formats without I even have to update them.

It would be good if will be themes for children and old people with big visible fonts and icons in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

If you add somehow most simplified panel and and menu view for most important things like web browsing and gaming, we will not need think how to configure it.

Ubuntu is linux for human beings, it means for everybody. None of linux distributions has this feature, let Ubuntu be the first who has it.

Addition: 1. Big cursor with big clicable area setting
2. Disabled keyboard repeating? When one presses a key, reaction might not be good to enter only one letter - it's not useful.
3. Big fonts, big icons and widow decorations.
( 4. A RADICAL idea: home directory set as the desktop - $DESKTOP=~ - all files of old man or child are on desktop, and there is no need to click on 'home' icon)

Don't have to drag the playhead to move position when playing media
Written by belovedmonster the 12 Mar 08 at 20:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One thing that drives me potty about Totem and Rhythmbox is that unlike all the other apps I've used (on windows) you can't simply click anywhere on the "timeline" to move to that portion of the song/video instead you have to actually click on the moving playhead marker and drag it where you want.

So if I want to skip to the last 30 seconds of a song I can't just click near the end of the timeline, I have to actually drag the playhead all the way across to the end.

Which do you think is easiest? ....

Click
or
Click + drag + release

I'll give you a clue. It aint the the process that takes 3 steps!

Shut down computer when update complete option
Written by bogdan_5844 the 13 Mar 08 at 17:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I hate it when I have to do a lenghty update(such as when first installing Ubuntu)but being in a rush and not having enough time to wait for the PC to update in order to shut it down.

I suggest a "Shut down computer when update complete" option in Ubuntu Update Manager.

The cover art plugin is great, but sometimes I have it download wrong cover arts.

There should be a way to remove the wrong cover art- possible an "X" button that shows up when the mouse is over the cover art image.

The aMule's "Incoming" directory must be more explicit
Written by ricardo the 1 Mar 08 at 20:29. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
aMule is a very popular P2P client, equivalent to the Windows eMule client.

It's difficult for the newbie to find out the Incoming directory of aMule, because it's inside the hidden directory ".aMule".

There must be (in the adecuate place) a symlink to the aMule's "Incoming" directory, i.e. "~/.aMule/Incoming". Several posible places are:

- The home directory (/home/user/Incoming)
- The user Desktop (/home/user/Desktop/Incoming)
- A more general "Downloads" directory (/home/user/Downloads/Incoming)

Kernel + Iptables + layer7 + PP2P
Written by Siarom the 28 Feb 08 at 17:55. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu should have layer-7 PP2P modules compiled with the Kernel and iptables a long time ago. This resource would be a wonderfull tool for network administrators, because the lack of efficiency in controling the network nowdays.

The documentation on the instalation is incomplete, and full of errors. I believe this is a major interest of everyone in the comunity, and this boosts up the proccess of migrating a server to Ubuntu.

Non-stop online P2P localization and helpdesk
Written by OneByOne the 29 Feb 08 at 10:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is what I want:

When I install new software, I want right-click some strange new word in menus for example and click "translate", asked "What language?", find it from dictionary and write it in finnish. Then the new translation is added automaticly to P2P-database of translations and automaticly polled against other suggestions as translations. I can get from database translations what others have done, and if I'm not satisfied with some translation, I can write my own one and again make automatic vote for that one.

Same for "Help". Right-click some button or field, choose Help and get from database what other users have written as explanations for that place or if there are open "Questions", write your own help and share it with others.

In matter of days, if popular software, you can have it fully translated and explained for your language. And all you have done is translate some words and write some explanations as help for some workings of software.

symbolic links to window partition my documents

there should be a shortcut to my documents on your windows drive on the ubuntu desktop or in the home folder. This could all be done through options on the live cd.

if people have spent a lot of time using windows they will have a lot of stuff in their my documents folder. people are not going to want to copy this across (or they cant due to space limitations)
so lets give them easy access to their old data with symlinks (which can of course be instantly deleted if the user wishes).

i would go futher and say symlink to their old my music folder either as a replacement for Music in ubuntu or probably (as ubuntu developers would prefer) inside the music folder (ie ~/Music/Windows Music or something). the same for pictures and videos .... or anything else that windows has now. Then when they open rhythmbox, the new music and the old music are both there, same in fspot. seamless migration.

[ i would preferable choose symlinking ~/Music itself etc. automatically to the windows equivalent, so that people can switch between windows and linux and have their files follow them. New files put in music folder in linux are easily available in windows. but that is just me ]

Perhaps someone can come up with a better idea.

the ubuntuforums thread show that people want one home folder, although the way attempted in the thread is the wrong way
check out the blueprint (not made by me)
