Turn off monitor without turning off computer
Written by loonyphoenix the 30 Mar 08 at 17:36. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Like the title says, I want to turn off my monitor sometimes. With a hotkey. Complete with LCD backlight. Sure, you can usually do it by pressing the power key, but on a laptop you've got to close the lid, and sometimes I want to turn off the montitor without closing the lid, for example, when I'm using the notebook as a substitute audio player. Conserving the energy, yet having access to back/forward/volume/etc...

If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Wireless troubleshooter GUI
Written by zvbxrpl the 1 May 08 at 13:01. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We all know that wireless in Ubuntu (and Linux generally) can be a pain. Most of the time though, devices that won't work out of the box can be made to do so with a little tweaking. The trouble is, there are so many different things to try: use a different kernel module, change parameters, change encryption method on your router, install NDISwrapper, etc. What is needed is some kind of unified GUI tool that can talk users through these various options. It needn't be aimed at the complete newb - maybe someone who has configured the odd wireless devices under Windows but who doesn't know how to go about doing it in Ubuntu.

What I'm suggesting is *not* a souped-up version of network manager, or even better kernel support for wireless, both of which have already been suggested here. It looks like the former will be much improved in the Ibex anyway, and there's not much Ubuntu can do about the latter. What is needed is a separate utility that can be invoked if the user is having problems. Something that could swap different modules in and out of the kernel, download and compile an updated driver from Sourceforge etc., and possibly provide some important information on what driver is in use (e.g. whether it supports WPA).
If using the Windows drivers is the only option, the troubleshooter could act like the Restricted Drivers manager in providing an easy way to download and install Windows drivers for NDISwrapper. The WiFix project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/wifix) looks set to tackle some of these tasks - could Ubuntu get involved in this?

People around the globe that are using/concidering using Ubuntu are afraid that some of their hardware won't work for them. And some are frustrated to buy additional add-on cards to work around unsupportad onboard chips. All this could be avoided with a lookup in an ubuntu Hardware Database Website.

Some problematic hardware can be used with more or less work if helping information is available together with the hardware compatabillity data.

The hardware database can be found at http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

From idea #47: The data should then be available in a format that is simple for users to browse on-line when considering new hardware.

Make people aware brainstorm isn't for bug reporting
Written by YSH the 15 Mar 08 at 16:06. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many ideas on brainstorm are just bugs, and brainstorm is not for bugs, its for ideas. If you got a bug, go to launchpad. Obviously not everyone new to ubuntu knows that, so they post it here as an idea. There should be some warning, most likely when you're submitting a new idea, that that's the way it is.

Automatically Unmount a USB Flash Drive when Disconnected
Written by jdennis_99 the 2 May 08 at 23:07. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
When you plug a USB Flash Drive in, Ubuntu cleverly detects and mounts it for you. Lovely. However, when you disconnect it, Ubuntu can't unmount it. It stays displayed on your desktop as a mounted drive, but can't be accessed. If you reinsert the same drive, Ubuntu mounts it under a different name.

The prevention is simple - manually unmount the drive before you physically disconnect it.

The cure is also simple - use Terminal to do a 'sudo umount' to force an unmount of the 'rogue' drive.

However, this doesn't seem particularly intuitive to me. It would be vastly preferable for Ubuntu to recognise when the drive has been disconnected, and to force the unmount itself.

Don't stop bug fixing!
Written by caligarn the 27 Apr 08 at 14:35. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.

I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.

There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.

What do ya'll think?

Make Linux Libertine the default (serif) Font in OpenOffice
Written by fragro the 19 Mar 08 at 13:49. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Linux Libertine is a very good readable and well designed serif Font. Lightyears better than any other Times* Font.

The most effort is the upper case "ß". (There are only the lower case defined yet)

http://linuxlibertine.sourceforge.net/

I've written my Diploma work with this Font and it looks great!

Add "Get-You" to Ubuntu Sources
Written by Raybuntu the 9 Apr 08 at 19:47. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I found a very smart tool named "Get-You" https://launchpad.net/get-you/
It's for downloading videos from videosites like Youtube, Myvideo, Dailymotion (pivate and public videos), Google Video , Clipfish, MTV.de Video (german), Netlog, Pro Sieben Video (German), Yahoo Video, Sevenload, Myspace Video, daleaplay.com, rofl.to, myubo.sk, holylemon.com, loadup.ru, guba.com, revver.com and so on! (This Sites are next: http://get-you.inmediato.de/index.php/videoportalsammlung.html)
It can convert the vids in mpg or export the mp3 from the Videos. It can be used in the terminal or with a GUI! The GUI is written in Java and can search videos directly without internet browser. The main Homepage is http://get-you.inmediato.de/ (german).

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

UPDATE ! Please read: jaolt does support almost every auction platform and is NOT only focussed on ebay. !
If you do not like ebay, please suggest another platform to integrate, instead of voting down. Thank you very much :)

The Java Auction Organisation and Listing Tool ("jaolt") allows the users to create and organize their auctions for eBay and Auvito (more to come) offline as well as list the created auctions without using a website.
After the auction is created offline you could send it to Ebay or Auvito whenever you want.

Update Pidgin in the repositories - fix ICQ bug
Written by PiHalbe the 2 Jul 08 at 09:28. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Pidgin Internet Messenger. Implemented
Pidgin Version 2.4.3 has been released 2008-07-01, the repositories still host 2.4.1. The current version fixes a serious problem that prevents ICQ from connecting since 2008-06-30.

I bet a lot of users are off-line right now, it is urgent to fix this as soon as possible.

Developer comments
The updated version of Pidgin that works with ICQ is now available via the update manager.

Brew our very own ubuntu beer
Written by Auzy the 6 Mar 08 at 13:27. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Next time you sit back and relax, remember to chill out with an ubuntu beer..

Some ideas were talking about making plushy toys, etc. So why not also rebrand some beer, and hand it out at tech conferences. Ubuntu will be the most popular booth around.

And I know it sounds stupid, however, its a very good way to attract attention. For people who have never heard of ubuntu, it would encourage them to come to the booth and hang around with other diehard ubuntu users (and get the word out there).

Don't discard ideas form which you have no gain
Written by Primož Papič the 24 May 08 at 17:11. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is already in Brainstorm guidelines, but I think sometimes we don't follow the guidelines well enough, or have not even read it.
For Brainstorm users
======================
Some ideas are discarded because you personally have no real gain if it is implemented or not.
Example: An idea proposing that Epiphany's download icon is turned into a bar; I personally have no real gain from it.
I don't use Epiphany I don't even use GNOME. But some do use Epiphany so I should not vote this idea down just because it brings nothing new for me. But I will vote for idea about Konqueror or KDE, which would not bring any benefit to someone that uses GNOME.
Sometimes I got the feeling that us users are forgetting that our default desktop or settings are not default for all.
This also goes in other direction; don't propose idea that only you would benefit from, or if you do try to reason why would be this good for every user not just yourself.
==============
I know this is not an idea but more of a proposal, but you should still consider it and if you agree with it implement it.

Promote the usage of free formats
Written by Primož Papič the 8 May 08 at 20:55. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know it's not really the issue of CANNONICAL or ubuntu, but still.
I'm using kubuntu, but i save all of my files in doc, because
odt isn't supported everywhere, i listen music in wma format
(don't really know why not rather in mp3) because no mp3 palyer or anything like that supports ogg format. I have to write my seminar work in times new roman, because my faculty demands that all the documents to be written in this font.
The idea of free software is lost when the society demands that you use non-free formats...
-----------------------------------
Edited: 13.5.2008:
I forgot to add idea hoe to promote that...
Well as you see I contemplated for a long time and this is what I came up:
As said in the comments sign on going or start a new on-line petition.
Lobby (with whole open source community) at your government to switch from proprietary software to open / free software.
I remember that i once read that Linux is national OS in Chine and some other countries.
Demand that your university adds TNR similar open font as their "demanded font".
And all of us that are citizens of European Union should lobby that EU demands from "mp3" producers to produce mp3 players with free formats support. Also we could even demand that computers shouldn't be sold with preinstalled OS
(usually Windows), so that user can choose to buy or self install OS that they prefer.
(I think the EU could do all of this, because it already made Microsoft to exclude media player from windows and also the whole office suite...)
Hope this gives some idea what you can do to promote free formats

Written by fordplay the 15 Apr 08 at 09:07. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If a users system has hardware that doesn't have a driver installed by ubuntu the system should tell the user, and suggest where to to get the driver.

For example:
This laptops wifi card isn't currently supported by ubuntu by default. You can make it work by using...

This notification should not be annoying and should be cancellable.

Already ubuntu user can connect to internet via network-manager applet, but it lacks some features:
1. There is no visual notification that indicates whether system is connected to internet or not.
2. You can not choose between dial-up connections via nm applet.
