Ubuntu is not (imo) the best looking OS out there, not even close to. I have som ideas to make Ubuntu look great.

Ideas:

* SVG icons.
* A theme that apply to EVERY application.
* More then just human theme.
* Better menus. Like the KDE4 or OpenSUSE menu.
* More then just a brown wallpaper included.
* Fresh up the look of synaptic, make it look like "Install or Uninstall programs", maybe a Apple influenced theme.
* Just one activity bar, like in Windows.
* Not just a blank activity bar, make it look more like Windows or at least make it look better.
* Stop making the screen flicker when starting up, like in Fedora ( think it was called X11 fst or something like that)
* Nicer icon theme, like Crashbit on gnome-look.

Well that just a few of my thoughts about how to make Ubuntu look better.

3. convert the zoom button to a slider, move to buttom left
4. move view mode to the left of the slider, convert to buttons.
5. add "eject" button next to removable media.

Create a banner for a Myspace page that has a link to the Ubuntu website!

This is a cheap way to promote Ubuntu to all your friends in Myspace!

Many comments said it would be better if we would not be able to vote for our ideas.
believe it or not, but I wanted to post that long time ago, just thought it's not the best idea. Now I see that there are lot of people that agree with me.
I usually don't vote for my idea at the get go, but do vote after some time when it's still on 0 or even on -1.
I still have not voted on some of my ideas, and I voted one of my ideas down (fully consciously).
And that 1 vote really doesn't make a difference if idea is bad it's still bad it just have 1 plus vote and 50 minus votes.
BTW: I didn't voted for this idea

I don't know of any open source PDF reader plug-in for any browser. So I installed adobe acrobat, which I think it's not open source or is it?
There are good open source PDF readers like Okular or XPDF, so
I think it wouldn't be so hard to make plug-in at least for Firefox if not for all other browsers..

Firefox extensions are a pain to maintain in the repositories, and very often lag behind when updating them. They should be removed as they are EXTREMELY easy to install from Firefox itself.

Ubufox may be an exception due to its nature though.

OpenOffice is one of the most important OpenSource and Free Software and it's vital part of Ubuntu.

I suggest to create a ppa repository for OpenOffice 3.0 development version in order to test it thoroughly before the final release.

Similar ppa repositories for AbiWord 2.6 and many other smaller projects have already been created for Ubuntu.

Sometimes when I click the little notification icon for the update manager it takes a while for the app to launch. Not sure whether I actually clicked the icon I click it again. This usually leads to that I have something like 2 - 3 instances of the update manager running.

From a user point of view It would be better if Ubuntu disallowed multiple instances of the update manager and other apps where there is absolutely no need to have more than one instance running. The same goes for add/remove and others.

title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.

Today I find myself in this position:
My Kubuntu System was roaring and terrible slow. I was wondering: “Did something go wrong during the upgrade?” One look in “top” thought me it was a daemon a “pinot” daemon. An other Search tool.... I just deinstalled “Strigi”! Many people will not look up what is using their resources they just will say: “ubuntu is slow”. People who want to use a Search Tool are able to activate it! So:

Please do not activate Data Crawlers per default!

Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.

There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.

It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.

Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

I'd like to see a way to pledge a donation amount towards a project (even month or so).

Like a lot of us pay a subscription fee for Cedega. Instead of paying USD5 to them per month though, I'd rather pay Wine USD5 per month and have more control to be able to list the priorities on what they should code in terms of gaming.

We should work together with projects to set up a Donation pledge type system, with various projects, and votes (approved by the project) for different targets. (So that people are a bit in control as to what their donation works towards doing).

I bet a lot of people would be willing to pay $5 a month for 6 months if it meant flawless X-FI support for instance.


Some example targets people could vote for on Wine may be: Improve Internet explorer support, Improve support for copy protection in morrowind, EAX support for games

And some examples for openoffice may be:
Decrease loading times, Start coding compatibility with iWork.

And some for the Cups team may be:
Improve support for latest HP series printer, Investigate Fab_at_home 3D printer support

Some ideas need to be generic, but some are so jokingly generic or obvious, it doesn't help developers at all. One example is the oldskool idea "Better hardware support".

Well, Everything in the hardware category is a dupe of that. It got over 1000 votes, yet it does not help developers at all, is obvious, and it cannot be fulfilled. "Better webcam support" is a tad more specific, at least people can mention exactly which webcams they are having issues with. Better would be to say "support UVB webcams out of the box".

Any comments in "Better hardware support" will be so broad, it wont help target specific hardware

There must be a way to stop this sillyness. Ideas marked as requiring more info or obvious should notify the author, and close the idea. Otherwise we end up with unattainable ideas, that get us nowhere, and dent future development.Mods should have the last say so the system wont be abused.


Otherwise next idea I post should be "Make ubuntu more user friendly". Yeah, that will get me to most popular ever. But it shouldn't!

Both Apple and Microsoft have a website dedicated to dispelling myths of their platforms (and in apple's case such as with viruses, lying about a lot of things). http://www.apple.com/getamac/

We need to offer a way to show people when visiting the main website why you would buy a Linux computer, and the benefits.

Apple's website has garbage like "114,000 viruses? Not on a Mac." Surely we can compete with garbage like that.

We have our own strengths, and as Ubuntu proceeds, we should emphasise them to people, and show them why they need linux. Because at the moment, you go to any website, and it shows you all these features (which is all good), but what makes them better?

Some things may include:
Its free, largest selection of high quality free programs, commercial and widely available free support, easily managed via Canonical Landscape or free solutions, Plays better with Windows and Apple networks then they do, etc.

Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.

I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.

There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.

Similar to XP, for many users it would really help to see which users are 'available' and then to just click and enter the password. Although it is perhaps a little less safe, it would greatly enhance usability for the users. Also, it would be easier for XP users to get used to the Ubuntu look.
