Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

It would make ubuntu much less intimidating for windows server admins if there was a gui which allowed configuation of common network services such as:

web
ssh
mail
database
vpn
dhcp
ldap
dns

Some of these are easier than others but I have seen very little work on this front and I think it will help win over windows admins.

There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.

And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.

**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :

1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.

2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.

3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.

When a user currently boots into the 'recovery mode' from GRUB, they are presented with a command-line interface with complete root privileges and no introduction. This is just not user-friendly by any definition.

With the introduction of bullet-proof X in 8.04, it should be possible to launch some sort of gui no matter what, so how about creating a guided recovery app (in the style of 'ubiquity-only') that goes something like this:

Welcome to the Ubuntu Recovery Helper.
-If you booted into this mode because booting Ubuntu normally doesn't work, press continue.
-If you have booted into this mode by accident, you can reboot your computer and choose the option to load Ubuntu normally.
-If you are an advanced user and would like to go straight to the command-line, press Advanced.
[REBOOT] [ADVANCED] [CONTINUE]

If they press continue:
-If you know approximately what is wrong with your PC, select it below and press Continue.
-If you don't know what is wrong, press I Don't Know.

Selecting Graphics Card or Monitor would launch the X.org configuration utility, with the additional option to 'Autodetect any display hardware changes' (runs "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xorg-server" or whatever the exact code is). Selecting I Don't Know would launch the same prompt that the hardware database thingie uses, and when an error is reported would go to the appropriate item from the list above.

I'm not going to go through the entire thing, but I'm sure you get the idea. At the moment, Windows recovery mode is just an admin desktop, and Ubuntu is command-line. We're currently behind, but implementing something like this would put us years ahead. It would also make a great 'important feature' for 8.10 (like compiz-fusion was for 7.10).

Currently it is very difficult to setup and control access to shared folders without editing conf files and reading detailed instructions on all the variables. I propose that sharing (specifically Samba) be given a well worked GUI and some real TLC to bring it up to standard with the experience on Windows or OS X.

For example, by default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

I propose the Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.


Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Here's a mockup I've done, based on the ideas from this thread and a couple of my own. Tell me what you think.

The top progress bar shows the total progress, two buttons beside it pause/cancel the entire queue.

The cancel buttons may have confirmation they pause the queue/item, ask you if you're sure and than either stop or continue the process. For the brave crowd, they immidiately stop the process :)

Folder button opens the destination folder.

Only one process at a time unless forced to start.

Up/Down arrows reorder the items based on priority, the higher ones get processed first.

Clear button clears all the finished jobs.

Currently, pictures are organized like this:

Everyone organizes their large photo collections by full date because
1) this is how the pictures are taken (in events that typicaly fall on one date)
2) this is how typically other photo management programs group them (see Vista Photo Gallery, Picasa, etc.)
3) you need to be able to get at the folders from outside of the application. This is critical for backup/recovery, passing to friends, etc.
4) Having the folder marked as day only makes it not practical to add a description to the folder name

What I'm talking about is that on import, f-spot should by default create folders such
Pictures/2008-07-01
Pictures/2008-07-05
This is the best starting point, since 90% of the time, each album is separated by day. The date should be pulled in from exif data. I actually organize my albums by year, then date + description. For example,
Pictures/2008/2008-07-01 Birthday Party
Pictures/2008/2008-07-05 Camping
This should be configurable as everyone has their own preferences. Yes, even this format should be supported
Pictures/2008/07/01

but it should not be the default.

You should be able to edit the folder name from within F-Spot as well as from the file manager. F-Spot should be able to recognize the change and not loose any categorization for the affected photos.

a lot of times, text is not copied. even if i cut, the selected text disapears in firefox and isn't pasteable in pidgin. sometimes the clipboard is an older version, if i paste.

The Gnome panel needs the ability to lock the entire panel like objects on the panel can be locked to the panel.
This would prevent accidentally deleting or moving the panel.

The xsane frontend is the most feature-complete gui scanning program, but the interface is complicated and difficult to use.

There are a ton of buttons for adjusting contrast and gamma and resolution etc. that most users don't need. And there's the histogram window, which is just plain confusing

Would it be possible for a simplified version of it to be made with the more complex options visible only under an advanced tab? Just do something to make it less scary-looking.

There are a lot of requests on Brainstorm to include packages by default, and a lot of them are good suggestions that would make the desktop experience more enjoyable. I suspect that the reason that many of them are not included is that either the CD cannot hold them all, or a desire to keep the size of the default installation down.

One solution would be to create an ubuntu-free-extras metapackage similar to the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, but that incldues a bunch of free packages that make the ubuntu experience better. Certainly this wouldn't install every package in the repositories that wasn't on the CD, just some that would be nice to have installed, but that didn't make the cut when it came time to make everything fit onto the CD.

This package could include everything from tools to themes. I'm sure that I'm missing lots, but a few off of the top of my head are:

Developers should post their own ideas for future Ubuntu releases so we can vote on them.

That would be a way for them to say "We are thinking about including this new feature and we would implement it this way" and get our feedback.

Of course it could be a new category or section or whatever.
