Add group authorization support to PolicyKit. (right now only users are supported) So you can e.g. give the whole group "pupils" certain rights.

Ubuntu needs an smart apt-get with the following options:
1. apt-get func-upgrade (upgrades packages with new features)
2. apt-get secu-upgrade (security upgrades)
3. apt-get perf-upgrade (replaces with optimized packages)
4. apt-get usab-upgrade (replaces with better usability packages)

Can it be done that the services have a partial sleep mode. ie. for example, bluetooth services will stay disabled until a bluetooth device is actually plugged in. Many desktop users do not have bluetooth and the service has to be manually disabled in some cases..

Synaptic should install downloaded files while others are still downloading

Synaptic can take a while to download everything (if you select dozens of packages) and it's annoying that you have to wait for everything to download first before it starts to install. To make the process quicker, synaptic should install the packages that have been downloaded (providing their dependencies are downloaded too) while it is downloading other things. This would speed up the install process for everything - including updates!

Auto-magically configure Ubuntu installation

I could not install Hardy Heron on my old laptop with < 256 MB RAM
I think Ubuntu should auto-magically install the most suitable Desktop/WM depending on the system resources as explained in
http://wiki.dennyhalim.com/ubuntu-minimal-desktop
# sudo aptitude install jwm
# sudo aptitude install fluxbox
# sudo aptitude install lxde
# sudo aptitude install fvwm-crystal
# sudo aptitude install icewm
# sudo aptitude install xfce4
# sudo aptitude install gnome-core
# sudo aptitude install kde-core
# sudo aptitude install kde4-core
#
* generaly, i try to sort them with their memory usage. if you have absolute minimal ram (64meg) use the first (jwm/fluxbox only)
* at most bottom, gnome-core, kde-core and kde4-core is the heaviest. avoid them if you have very small ram (

My point here, is that the default startpage should be more robust than it currently is. At least, provide means to configure it in order to have direct access to their GMail or Yahoo mailboxes. Publish some interesting info about Ubuntu on it. Make users want to keep this page as their start!

Better differentiate the "Install" option on the Live CD

Currently, on the Live CD for Hardy, there are two options you can use to install Ubuntu, "Start Ubuntu without any change to your computer" and "Install Ubuntu". Both of these start the same services. The only difference is that the "Install Ubuntu" option only starts the installer. First of all, do we really need to start all the services that the normal startup starts, like Bluetooth? The only services that we should need to start in the "Install Ubuntu" option are HAL, a stripped version of Gnome, hard disk services, and (very) basic networking. That might make getting to the installer faster.

Recognize multiple batteries on laptops

I have two batteries for my laptop. The original one with very low capacity and a new one with good capacity.
When I swap the batteries, Ubuntu doesn't notice the difference and predicts the wrong "time remaining", because it thinks the old battery is still in there.
There sould be seperate predictions for different batteries.

Let us invest in Ubuntu: 1 to 100 USD monthly plan

We all love Ubuntu, but most of us can not easily participate or just lack the time. So to give Canonical extra speed, I would love to invest 1 to 10 USD a month. With the power of millions of investing users, the money invested could give a push that we can not have today. What about adding 500 chinese or indian low cost developers to the mission? Ill pay. Especially if I could get some return on investment. And, switching users just got a new dimension - then it´s called sales - building up our collective product.
I don´t know if it has to be stocks in Cannonical. There are quite smart people out there that could find other ways I am sure.
