Usability is inversely proportional to the number of USER clicks for the desired
Written by known the 1 Jul 08 at 21:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

How many mouse clicks you need to find out the CPU type of your laptop?
In XP it is 3
In Ubuntu it is 4

You will find a rational and coherent discussion on this topic at http://digg.com/microsoft/Why_I_Still_Use_Windows_Despite_the_Peer_Pressure?t=1 6396532#c16404645

I request Ubuntu team to prioritize the USER desired features and Profile the number of mouse clicks required for those features.

Auto-magically configure Ubuntu installation
Written by known the 4 Jul 08 at 09:43. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
I could not install Hardy Heron on my old laptop with < 256 MB RAM

I think Ubuntu should auto-magically install the most suitable Desktop/WM depending on the system resources as explained in

http://wiki.dennyhalim.com/ubuntu-minimal-desktop

# sudo aptitude install jwm
# sudo aptitude install fluxbox
# sudo aptitude install lxde
# sudo aptitude install fvwm-crystal
# sudo aptitude install icewm
# sudo aptitude install xfce4
# sudo aptitude install gnome-core
# sudo aptitude install kde-core
# sudo aptitude install kde4-core
#

* generaly, i try to sort them with their memory usage. if you have absolute minimal ram (64meg) use the first (jwm/fluxbox only)
* at most bottom, gnome-core, kde-core and kde4-core is the heaviest. avoid them if you have very small ram (

Ubuntu needs an smart apt-get with the following options:

1. apt-get func-upgrade (upgrades packages with new features)
2. apt-get secu-upgrade (security upgrades)
3. apt-get perf-upgrade (replaces with optimized packages)
4. apt-get usab-upgrade (replaces with better usability packages)
