A faster way to assign emblems to items
Written by Aphoxema the 8 Nov 08 at 04:17. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently to assign an emblem to an item you have to open the properties of the item(s) then go to the emblems tab and select the emblems you want to add or remove.

Emblems might be more useful if there was a faster way to assign them, like having them in the context menu or holding right click or middle click a second shows an emblems menu.

Show which Ideas have been selected for Ubuntu Developer Summit for version 9.04
Written by Ubun2ideas the 10 Sep 08 at 05:15. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brainstormers should see which ideas are being considered for, and/or will be represented at the upcoming Ubuntu Developer Summit for Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope.

According to the recent announcement outlining sponsorship requests for UDS
http://www.jonobacon.org/?p=1278

The first step in applying for summit sponsorship is:

"Go to Ubuntu Brainstorm and pick out a bunch of ideas on there that you are interested in working on for the Ubuntu 9.04 release. Remember, we expect all sponsored participants to lead at least one discussion for a Brainstorm idea, but we also expect you to attend a number of additional sessions. Note down the brainstorm ideas you are interested in."

The Brainstorm website should be linked with the application site, so that Brainstormers can see which ideas are being considered and/or will be represented at the summit.

Synaptic needs to be indexed
Written by fazillatheef the 23 Jul 08 at 11:41. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
After adding new repositories and clicking reload,Synaptic downloads lists from servers. And after that When I search for an application in synaptic it takes to much time to find me the package.Actually its looking into the list that was downloaded.

I think indexing the package name and description after reloading the package list can improve synaptic performance.

easy way to create private secure encrypted folders through nautilus

Right-mouse-click in nautilus should have an option to create a private secure encrypted folder (for example in your home dir or on your usb stick). All files and folders in this special folder should be automatically encrypted and still be usable like normal files (after providing a strong pass-phrase to unlock the folder).

In this way people/organizations/companies/governments who want to secure their usb sticks don't have to buy expensive usb sticks but can use average cheap usb sticks.

Developer comments
This is half-implemented : there is now the possibility to create a private encrypted directory in your home directory, but it's only available in the alternate CD installation, and from the command line in an installed system.

Do not use Black Screen screensaver during installation
Written by webhamster the 18 Apr 08 at 20:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it is very confusing that during installation, the screen suddenly becomes black. It would be much better if there would be at least a simple image, so that the screen does not look like the computer just crashed.

delete desktop entry "Wine Windows Emulator"
Written by natureflow the 27 Apr 08 at 10:17. Category: System. Related to: Wine. Already implemented
Use binfmt_misc instead .desktop!

Please delete the desktop entry "Wine Windows Emulator" (/usr/share/applications/wine.desktop). Wine Is Not an Emulator and you do not need this desktop file. After deleting this file you can easily execute an windows file without beeing confused because the "open with Wine Windows Emulator".

Developer comments
The .desktop file is staying (it's also needed for .msi files), however the text has been changed to "Wine Windows Program Loader" and translated

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection

Written by Alan Pope the 28 Feb 08 at 13:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Welcome tutorial for new Linux users
Written by MK the 4 May 08 at 20:51. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Even though things are simple, Windows uses get lost. These are some points the tutorial could cover...

____How to configure internet connection (Typing “sudo pppoeconf” in the terminal is easy but not intuitive, it should to be written somewhere)

____Where are the Windows files

____How to set up restricted drivers

____How to configure screen resolution

____How to install and uninstall programs (there are many ways to install programs in Linux: add/remove, synaptic, apt-get, and GDebi... it can be confusing in the beginning)

____Setting tracker indexing on (once you install Ubuntu and search for your files it simply doesn't work and nothing tells you need to set the indexing on)

____Automatic mount hard drives on startup (unless there is some technical reason for not doing so. If they can't be automatically mounted then there should be an item indicating the need to mount the drivers before accessing them)

____Where to solve problems ( links to support sites in the Firefox favorites could help...)

These are some ideas for the tutorial... everyone can contribute with other ideas or reject some points.

Prevent duplicate bug attachments
Written by Auzy the 13 May 08 at 09:01. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Every 2nd post here seems to be attached to "Bug #1: Microsoft has a majority market share"

It was HAHA funny to begin with, but now its gotten out of hand, and people should actually be filing PROPER bug's/feature requests anyway.

In fact, I'd imagine that it actually screws up the status system too.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)
Power Management

Sorted Fonts
Written by taron the 10 Apr 08 at 18:01. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is more a thought than an idea, because I'm not sure how it can be implemented in all applications.

The thing is, there are very many fonts. You can see a preview of them in the Font menu (of OOo, GIMP, ...), but especially when you've downloaded fonts from the internet, you should be able to let the fonts be sorted or sort they manually. Of course it would be just an option, default would be alphabetically sorting.

I thought of sth like that:
**Fonts
*Serif
Times
...
*Sans-Serif
DejaVu Sans
...
*Handwriting (Block)
Comic Sans MS
...
*Handwriting (Cursive)
Palace Script
...
*Foreign Look
Old Romanian
Sovjet
German Fracture
German Sütterlin
Greek
Pseudo Saudi
Shanghai
Hirosh

Printing that just works
Written by dmk the 29 Feb 08 at 10:40. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Printing has come a long way in linux recently (automatic printer recognition, better support for full printer options, etc.), but there is still a long way to go. I wish I had a penny for every time I asked to print a PDF document with evince in A4 and it comes out US Letter or chopped or not at all. How about asking to print something double sided or two pages per sheet? These things fail as often as they work. And why does every application seem to have its own printing architecture? And how about trying to print photos? Don't get me started on that issue. Inevitably, I end up using proprietary applications like acroread or even switching to Windows for printing because they just work. I know historically why Unix has printing issues, but the time has come to fix the problem.

Fonts in OpenOffice are horrendously rendered and look thin and 'scratchy' (Times New Roman in Writer being a good example) and additionally there is no sub-pixel anti-aliasing even when the rest of my desktop is using it.

Some horizontal strokes such as on the small letter 'p' are actually invisible - there appears to be not enough weight in them and makes the document look like it has been photocopied too many times.

Currently this is not an application I would like to spend much of my day using (and thankfully I don't have to) - but if Ubuntu is being touted as suitable in an office environment, this could be a serious problem.

I am pushing for Ubuntu to be used in our company but this sort of thing does not help my case.

File Dialogs need option to filter by extension
Written by lee_connell the 7 Mar 08 at 02:25. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When opening files, it would be very convenient to filter files in a folder by extension. You would be familiar with this functionality in windows.

You can type *.pdf in the location box and you will stay in the current directory with only pdf files showing. It makes it much quicker for finding specific files.

So I right-clicked on a file and selected "Cut" in the context menu.
So that I later could "Paste" the file into another directory.

Make so that when you select "Cut" on a file, the icon becomes dimmed.
Because right now, there are no visual indication, so you don't know it worked.
In Windows there is a visual notification by the icon becoming dimmed.
In Ubuntu there is no visual notification, the icon does not become dimmed. This is confusing.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Show dead chess pieces

Written by Eldmannen the 19 Mar 08 at 03:08. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I play chess in real-life with a real chess board, then after we kill a chess piece, we move it away.

Like, if I kill my opponents chess piece, I move it to the left.
If he kill my chess piece, he move it to the right of the board.

So the dead chess piece stands outside the chess board, but on the table.

So I can see and get an quick overview of which pieces I have lost, and which he have lost.
So we can keep track of it.
And we can compare who has taken out most chess pieces, and who has taken out the most valuable chess pieces.

In glChess, after you kill your opponents piece, it just disappears.
I propose you make it so you can see the dead pieces, outside the board.
