A way to create custom spins of the live CD/installer images from the scratch

I've encountered this issue before several times, and every time there's some vocal people who say that there is no need for customized Ubuntu live CDs as there's no demand for this. Well you know, if you don't have the need to customize Ubuntu live CDs, it doesn't mean nobody is missing the feature. I am, for instance.
Even this brainstorming project as at least two similar requests [1], [2], so the demand is there. However, I don't want to be able just to remaster the official images, I want to be able to _create_ my custom images using the same tools that are used to create the official images.
As far as I know, Ubuntu is about free software and ideas behind this. So I see no reason why the tools used by Ubuntu internally are kept as some kind of a secret. I would like to be able to improve the tools, and contribute the changes back, and if they are liked, they would get incorporated to the official tree, just like with any free software project.
I think Fedora is leading the way in this matter [3]. They have developed a tool for this, pungi [4]. I'm not suggesting that Ubuntu should start using this tool as image creation tool since the pungi codes is probably coupled quite tightly with Fedora/RPM infrastructure, but similar project for Ubuntu would be very nice to have. Of course, if pungi or some other existing tool would be feasible for the task, using existing code is of course a good thing to do.

Command line hints on GUI interaction.

When working on my Ubuntu box I sometimes performing actions in the GUI of which I would like to know the command line version. This will and cannot go for all actions however a lot of tasks, simply tasks have a one or two line command line equivalent.
For example, changing the permissions on a file from a GUI could have a button/tooltip/?? message of the chmod command that will do exactly the same.
Changing the IP of your NIC could have a button/tooltip/?? message of ifconfig.
You should be able to turn this a button/tooltip/?? globally on or off so that users completely not interested in the command line versions of actions are not bothered by this option.
The reason for this request being:
- There are a lot of users working in both GUI and command line environments and like to quickly lookup command line operations.
- Users can experience new ways of interacting with system in a quick and good manner, the system becomes the manual itself.
- Users will be able to copy the button/tooltip/?? message, edit it and run it the way they like it in a terminal.
Adoption of working with the command line will become more widely spread and command line operations will be considered less threatening by new users. Also knowledge about the system will grow for users who have the button/tooltip/?? option enabled, knowing how something works makes accepting it easier.
Just my thoughts on this subject.
Regards,
Johan Louwers. [....]

It's all about the (retro) games

This is one for the folks at Canonical, I guess:
The number one cited reason for your average non-techie or only slightly-techie user not coming across to Ubuntu, or any non-Windows distro, is that the backlog of games that they have invested in over the years won't play on it.
(well actually, the main reason is that most have never heard of it, but amongst those who have, this is the reason)
But it's not about the latest and greatest, mention Elite, Dungeon Master or even some old spectrum game to a grown man and you might just glimpse a tear of nostalgia in his eye.
Would it not be in everyone's interests for the companies who have a vested interest in linux (Canonical, Novell, etc) to get together and buy a few licences for some retro games that everyone else has forgotten about and then open source them?
This can then maybe lure in folks who can't play these games on windows...

Improve IRC support

Newer users entering the IRC channels for
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu need to get answers to
their questions; as it stands now the Ubuntu
documentation is nowhere as comprehensive as
Gentoo, BSD, etc., so directing said users
to read the sometimes outdated and spotty
documents, or to 'just Google it' are non-
starters; similarly, agressive use of the bot
in lieu of careful explanation (which takes
just a few moments more) gives the impression
that Ubuntu is stuck in the overly technical
past Linux world, something that needs to be
dispelled to gain more widespread acceptance and
use. The Ubuntu community support system is
what sets it apart from other Linux distros;
fixing this will ensure that more not only swith
but stay around to help once they are more well-
versed in the finer points of setting up, using,
and fixing their Ubuntu systems.

Average user doesn't need command prompt

Ubuntu is never really going to take off until the average user can do everything they need to do with their PC without ever having to see the command prompt.
All OS administration etc needs to be possible through the use of dialogs rather than obscure configuration files.

Integrated with Gnome Live's OnlineDesktop

I notice that there is this fantastic project called OnlineDesktop - see http://live.gnome.org/OnlineDesktop
This has amazing potential to integrate into many different areas and become an essential source for many different applications. If we could get more Gnome apps to integrate with this, that would be fantastic.
Examples are:
1. An automatic upload of EOG to a photo application.
2. Keyring allows auto access to OnlineDesktop.
3. Integrated Evolution into a mail service.
There are plenty of other ideas for this sort of thing.

Create a global preference for media formats

There are multiple applications in Ubuntu, both optional or part of the default install that are capable of creating media files such as Ogg Theora, MP3 or a bunch of video formats. Having some global option to set which media formats you prefer for creation, and to allow applications to pick up these settings would make a lot of sense: A user that prefers FLAC or MP3 could make his choice in one location, instead of configuring each application individually.

Most popup screen are annoying and most of the times unnecessary. Gui applications should be tested and rated and other methods of user interaction be developed. A targeted cross-applicational usability review can lead to improvements.

Simplify torrent creation and submission

Creation and subsequent online submission of a torrent from a CD should be made easy. What I propose is a "one click" CD to OGG ripping and serrver upload. Why OGG as default? Because filesharing will make the format more popular.

Full disc encryption via initramfs and kexec

I think it is possible to have your system fully encrypted (including /boot) the following way:
Take your USB-stick (or a CD-R) as primary boot medium and loader. Put on it a kernel and a initrd that boots, and detects your fully encrypted harddrive. The kernel/initrd sets up dmcrypt/cryptsetup and unlocks your harddrive. Now it calls kexec and changes into the real system on the harddive and boots your system.
This way _everyting_ on the harddrive can be encrypted. It also has the advantage your running system doesn't need to know anything about it being encrypted at boot time. And things like kernelupgrades (mind update-initramfs) also don't have to bother with anything crypto related.
It would be nice to have such a really small kernel/initrd combo for your USB-stick and a system that can handle it being booted vie kexec.

I hate to say it but Dell's Ideastorm is better than Brainstorm. Ideastorm provides statistics, a far wider range of categories, more options to organize ideas and comments and is better at promoting cooperation and communication between users. Ideastorm also has html enabled so you can add pics and things....

You can use tabs with any and every application if you switch to a window manager with tabs. You can also change settings for all tabs everywhere at once and all tabs behave in the same way. And you can mix tabs from different applications in the same window.
