Imbedding a "dynamic" calendar into the desktop background

I would like to see an extra option implemented in the system tray clock which takes a copy of the current desktop image and then imbeds a calendar image into it - this would be done every time the system boots or when the date changes. The reason for doing this each boot/date change is so that the current date can be highlighted.
The idea comes from the UserFriendly monthly desktop images:
http://www.userfriendly.org/illiad/UFCalendar_SEP2008-MON.png
If implemented, please allow for user definable positioning.
Also, it would be extra sweet if it could be (optionally) linked with an agenda program so that dates with events on them could be highlighted.

Add tool for fixing fsck error related to UUID changing

I installed Ubuntu 'Intrepid' (development) to partition 5 for testing (my 'work' system, 'Hardy' runs on partition 6).
Now booting my 'work' system causes an error report:
"fsck.exts: Unable to resolve 'UUID=188478b0-...."
and also indicates my file system has been broken, by saying:
"Please repair file system manually"
Repairing manually turns out to be no small task. I did it once, after a great deal of investigation and work. I took notes about what I did, and amazingly, I have even found(!) the notes. Unfortunately they aren't clear enough and I'll have to begin researching this AGAIN(!) to make booting work correctly, again.
If Ubuntu can't avoid creating these problems while installing, could someone (more knowledgable than I am!) create a script that would let the user indicate that an Ubuntu install caused this problem and that it should be fixed? Then the error could trigger the optional repair process and make an Ubuntu upgrade or testing install MUCH less dysfunctional.
I can't believe that I am the only Ubuntu user who wants to try another version, or try to help with testing, who runs into this. It is (for me) a difficult 'manual repair'.
Thanks, James

Remove Mono and dependent applications from default Ubuntu Desktop CD. Mono occupies a significant amount of the valuable space on the live cd that could be used for translations and other things. Applications using mono use much more memory than their non-mono counterparts. Functionality can be provided by other applications that are just as good.
This will NOT remove Mono or any of the applications from the Ubuntu repositories, just the default Desktop CD. (Although removing them from the CD may mean they don't need to be in Main anymore)
This affects two applications included by default: tomboy and f-spot. Tomboy can be replaced by either sticky notes or zim and f-spot by gthumb.

Option to always open an application on the same workspace

A lot of people use workspaces for specifics needs: one for internet, another one for coding, a third one for openoffice etc.
But with Gnome, the only way to always open an application on the same workspace is to use tools like DevilSpie witch are not user-friendly.
So why not had a simple "Always open in this workspace" option when you right-click on a application title bar ? (for exemple between "Only on this workspace" and "Move to the left" options)

Truecrypt is a good disk crypt tool, the language packs can only work on Windows.
Add truecrypt to the official repository of ubuntu will help ordinary users.
And make it support i18n on linux is helpful for non English users.

Add a "Update from backports" checkbox in synaptics

When backports are enabled, the update manager wants (or propose) to update all the packages using the backports' source list, which is not what I want. I just want to enable one package's backport, to minimize the risks.
To do that, when backports are activated, we could have a checkbox added to each element of synaptic's list, which when ckecked would enable backport for that package (and necessary dependencies, if any).
From command line, it could just be a --enable-backport option for the apt-get install..
If i'm having problems with my up-to-date package, i would just have to uncheck the "enable backport" (or from command line something like remove + reinstall with --disable-backport, which would be the default behaviour), to restaure my package to the official way.
I wish my poor English has been well understood...

now ubuntu desktop icons are too separated one from another, they should be more together!!!!
sometimes people try the tighter layout in the Configuration Editor, and reduced desktop font size and distance one icon from another as my friend said and it looks excellent, but it also applies the same to folders in nautilus, which looks terrible because they don't have to be so closed.
this two options must be separate in nautilus preferences!!

Hardware testing online

i know that you already can browse online for hardware that works o.k. with ubuntu. but i don't know how.
i installed ubuntu anyway thinking: "that weird colers on my screen will be over when i install the drivers."
so... i did it, and windows would't start anymore. i really like ubuntu, but i want to keep windows in order to play games. so i needed to re-install everything.
for people like me and other non-technical users( like my mother, i think she should be able to handle ubuntu alone ) it would be very useful to have the hardware-testing application telling of my hardware is compatible.
like... i don't need to browse online, the application just looks up the data and looks if it works.
this way, anyone can see if their hardware is fine( some people don't viset webpage's they don't know. )
EDIT1:
it would also be useful to be able to download the application and run it in windows. i would like to have an stand-alone version so people can put it on their USB-stick and test any computer they like.

Port applications to Windows

I'm aware of this getting a lot of negative votes, but it seems to me as a good idea. The other problem is that it could be an dupe. But I'll take the risk.
===============
Prologue:
I recently installed Windows back on my computer (don't ask why). And I Noticed that I would really like to have some of the Linux apps on my Windows. Off course this was to some extent possible with KDE4.1.1 for windows, but there are "millions" of apps that are not ported to Windows.
Why is this a good idea?
Because of Firefox, OpenOffice and GIMP. All of these programs are free and GIMP was made especially for Linux and then ported to windows.
With more application that were developed for Linux ported to Windows, Linux will get a bit of limelight with them.
Meaning that someone is interested in Linux but isn't sure if this would be a good decision they could be persuaded with known apps that they were used to have in Windows.
One of apps that I know that it would be a really good for windows is K3b (but I know it will be ported in future when KDE4 for Windows reach stable state). I'm sure that there are other products that you can't imagine living without them.
==================================================
!Main idea!:
I know that porting all of the apps is an daunting task, so there is a simple and effective solution to this problem.
What "we" need is an "anti-wine" that's in "opposite direction" as Wine. So there should be a program which would provide a compatibility layer to Linux apps in Windows. I know this is probably very hard to program, probably even harder than wine was (as Linux uses totally different approach to organizing files as Windows). But in a long run this is still easier than porting one app at the time.
So you could just download tar.bz file and the "anti-wine" would compile it for you and install it on your computer. It should also support deb and rpm files.
================================================
So why should Canonical do this and how is this helping Ubuntu?
I know that Canonical first obligation is Ubuntu and its flavours but this could be a way to promote Ubuntu and Linux.

I like to try things out with linux, and sometimes I end up messing my installation up.
I would like to have a simple way to create an image of the main partition.
Is it possible to have, say in grub, options like "create an image of the system" and "restore the previous image".
Is there such a disk imaging tool, able to be called from grub ?

Alternate CD: reinstall Ubuntu over existing partition while preserving /home

The point of ubiquity-preserve-home is that it's supposed to work smoothly behind the scenes using Ubuntu's Installer "Ubiquity".
This feature seems to be missing from the Alternate CD, which means that people who cannot boot from the Live CD cannot do do this kind of recovery. I propose we create an alternatecd-preserve-home initiative to create the same recovery options.
What you can currently do with a Live CD
If you choose not to format the partition assigned to "/", then everything on that partition that would cause problems for an Ubuntu installation should be removed (e.g. the contents of /boot, /etc, /lib, /usr, etc.), but /home and other unknown directories that might contain data will be preserved.
Doing this does not require an explicit action by the user, other than choosing manual partitioning and *not* formatting the partition assigned to "/". This may be used as a last resort to restore Ubuntu to default at the point of installation but will preserve the /home directory.
This is very possible on the Live CD. When trying this from the Alternate CD I get the following errors:
1) Debbotstrap Warning - Failure while configuring base packages.
2) Unable to install busybox-initramfs

Make the art selection process more transparent

Ubuntu is a project that is well-served by a loving community. There are loads and loads of great mock-ups and art suggestions. And I'm sure the art team works really hard.
But Ubuntu often doesn't look great, to be honest. And Intrepid isn't moving the look and feel of the OS forward in leaps and bounds.
Ubuntu has a great community because of its open development process - but what about art development and selection?
We need a more open, transparent, process for how art decisions are made.

There has been a lot of positive talk in the past about replacing Pidgin with a better client that uses Telepathy but now there's one that looks like it's almost ready to do that! Empathy ( http://live.gnome.org/Empathy ) has much more potential than Pidgin since Empathy uses Telepathy ( http://telepathy.freedesktop.org ). Although i don't think Empathy is quite ready for this in Intrepid, it certainly will be for the next release.
(If you'd like to give it a try, don't use the old version in the Hardy repos, look here: http://cass.no-ip.com/~cassidy/blog/index.php/post/2008/04/14/Voice-and-video-c alls-with-Empathy )
The fact that Empathy uses Telepathy to manage all the different protocols it supports is what makes it so great. Why is it that Pidgin supports file transfers on AIM but not Jabber? Why can't i use VoIP to talk to my Google Talk friends in Pidgin?
Empathy will enable more desktop integration, better support for multiple protocols, and a happier user :)
The bottom line is that Empathy has been making much more progress and improving much faster than Pidgin thanks to Telepathy and including it in Ubuntu will only help the process along!
Major Update! Empathy is now part of Gnome-- http://blog.ibeentoubuntu.com/2008/08/gnome-has-empathy-for-you.html

Playonlinux Integration w/ WINE

PlayOnLinux is a WINE compatibility layer that lets you run many Windows programs over Linux. Since Wine isn't always easy to use(ex: command-line, tweaking) PlayOnLinux provides a front end for most Wine options to help you install, manage, and uninstall Windows-based games and applications.

I know it's not really the issue of CANNONICAL or ubuntu, but still.
I'm using kubuntu, but i save all of my files in doc, because
odt isn't supported everywhere, i listen music in wma format
(don't really know why not rather in mp3) because no mp3 palyer or anything like that supports ogg format. I have to write my seminar work in times new roman, because my faculty demands that all the documents to be written in this font.
The idea of free software is lost when the society demands that you use non-free formats...
-----------------------------------
Edited: 13.5.2008:
I forgot to add idea hoe to promote that...
Well as you see I contemplated for a long time and this is what I came up:
As said in the comments sign on going or start a new on-line petition.
Lobby (with whole open source community) at your government to switch from proprietary software to open / free software.
I remember that i once read that Linux is national OS in Chine and some other countries.
Demand that your university adds TNR similar open font as their "demanded font".
And all of us that are citizens of European Union should lobby that EU demands from "mp3" producers to produce mp3 players with free formats support. Also we could even demand that computers shouldn't be sold with preinstalled OS
(usually Windows), so that user can choose to buy or self install OS that they prefer.
(I think the EU could do all of this, because it already made Microsoft to exclude media player from windows and also the whole office suite...)
Hope this gives some idea what you can do to promote free formats

Create a "we want to play on ubuntu" page

Create a place where we linux users can shout out to the world "WE WANT TO PLAY ON UBUNTU LINUX"
Let us all sign and show the big companies that we exist and we are a potential marked that grows more and more every day!
Instead of asking the ubuntu team to make games work with ubuntu linux (which is quite stupid, hows that suposed to work and how much waste of development would that be?) make the gaming companies see that we exist and want support! Dont let all our requests get scattered and ignored over the www, make them all meet and bundle at one official ubuntu page.
There are games done for windows, mac, wii, ps3, psp and all other plataforms, why not ubuntu linux?
If the gaming world is able to visit a page and see "xxxxxxx ubuntu linux users want to play games!" why shouldnt they start doing it? It should be much easyer to develop games for a WORKING OS then for windows, with all its bugs and problems. That would mean less work for them, less support needed and more fun for us!
Please ubuntu team! Help us shout out!
PS: that can also be used for other types of applications, but I think games are the sollution to give Ubuntu the suport it needs. Games for Ubuntu bring working hardware for ubuntu (remember the nvidia logo before each game? "the way its meant to be played"?) and support from all companies who sell things to gamers.
Gaming mouses/keyboards joysticks... every big hardware company has something for gamers. If they start producing working drivers for that section, the other products will follow.

Integrated GUI to manage REMOTE CONTROLS (Bluetooth/IR/UIRT,HID phones, wii, lirc)

There should be an intuitive GUI for configuring all types of remote controls from bluetooth phones (and wii remotes?) to media centre style infra-red controllers.
It should interface with the LIRC daemon (lircd, irexec, irxevent) and HID daemon (hidd) along with other projects starting and stopping required services as devices become available.
The user should be able to select a preset profile containing sensible button mappings for their remote.
It must also be possible to graphically customise button mappings and create for instance .hid files to upload to compatible mobile phones and other devices. Also handle configuration of virtual pointer 'mice' and such devices.
Mappings could be dynamically linked to the particular application currently in use. ie. movie mappings chosen when totem/mplayer/vlc is open and audio mappings for amarok/ryhthmbox etc.
Maybe generic play/pause/next track/previous track/volume functions could be linked with gnome-settings-daemon as it already provides this functionality over dbus for multimedia keys.
Support could be added for full duplex remotes and tablets requiring backend servers such as bemused or remuco. Maybe a widely available java client for phones/PDA/XDA's could be developed/adapted (JamSE).
The LinuxMCE experience might serve as inspiration/guidance.
