Remove Music/Video/Pictures folders again

I recently installed Ubuntu again and I came to a scary conclusion after installation! Some folders appeared in my /home folder? I did not ask for them to be there
Is this an attempt to imitate Windows? There, too, I see strange folders in the 'My Documents' folder. Is this an attempt to make windows users 'feel at home' in Ubuntu?
Personally, I know very few people who actually use these folders.
What I'm trying to say is, maybe we should stick to our own standards and ideas rather than trying to lure Windows users over by imitating them?

The Idea is an ubuntu youtube clone for:
Samples
Program -> Help
To learn to use application.
Installation Steps
New Features in Ubuntu -> example 8.10 and so on.
Migration Prozess
Marketing.
Meetings, User Meetings
and all other Ubuntu videos
The tube must have Categories like ubuntu Brainstorming.
All people must have the possibility to make on video. So simple like screenshot -> klick record and stop. -> Comment it. -> Upload -> Finish.
Without GUI ->
make_vidoe -> stop_video -> save and upload it.
This solution will help all ubuntu users to make and share ubuntu teaching videos or trainings in Openoffice and all standard apps. Or to teach how you can make on new user an so on. This videos can be link to the wiki. I think it very easy to learn with videos and to explain with videos. I think it is difficult to write:
go to -> 1-> 2->3 -> and klick there.
Sorry for my bad english, i hope you can understood the idea thanks:-)

Give up Compiz-by-default for Metacity (with composite)

This complaint is about the compiz-by-default choice.
Compiz is great (like a lot other stuff) but it should not be installed by default (like a lot other stuff).
Before Compiz-by-default choice, Ubuntu - like GNOME - aimed at being simple to use.
Then Compiz was activated by default : users had to learn a lot of keyboard shortcuts to generate a lot of visual effects without regard to their utility but with regard to their bling bling side. And simplicity was only a souvenir.
Therefore i suggest to update Ubuntu hardware minimum requirements :
- Needs super brain with a lot of memory to remember Compiz' shortcuts
- Require at less 3 hands (or 2 hands with 12 fingers per hand) to be able to easily key Compiz' shortcuts
OR :
Maybe we could concentrate on giving only a bit of polish (thanks to transparency & dropped shadows) and especially on bringing useful functionnalities like preview on alt+tab and that Exposé thing ?
What about coming back to the rock-solid Metacity (which has composite in 2.22 version through XRender) and help to improve it (see for instance bugzilla Bug 502491 – New feature for the Compositor, Exposè-Like http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502491 ) to keep the desktop as simple as it should be ?
Compiz would stay available through Synaptic for people who'd like to have more effects.

I love to use Google Earth. And I assume a lot of others too. It would be great to have this program automatically in Ubuntu without the need to install it after installing the OS like Open Office etc.

The idea that the simple ingenuity needed to give programs unique and dissimilar names is apparently beyond the scope of the immeasurable collective intelligence that is the heart of Linux is quite simply risible. It's the KDE environment. Okay, we get it. But at least try to be original. If that fails, open a poll and let the community choose the name, but let's get over this pointless obsession with K's.

We are catching up on usability in the Linux community, but we still have not reached the level of polish of Windows or Mac. Fonts, Icons, Menus, Color Schemes, Themes, Buttons, Tabs etc. are not friendly. Apple publishes a "Human Interface Guidelines" that dictate how a user should interact with a computer. Why doesn't Ubuntu get in touch with some psychologists and designers and develop a common interface approach, one that is different from Gnome or KDE, but still based on them. It would be nice for Ubuntu to have an "exclusive" font, or an "exclusive" menu system.

Desktop theme must involve with the time.

I know that is more a gtk/gnome desktop evolution, but I'd like to submit this aniway.
Gnome desktop theme management is simple, and clean, but there is a feature that I'd like to add them.
I'd like my gnome theme involve with the time. For instance, the luminosity of the widgets and icons. There is also a lot of stuffs to do with the background : position or offset, slow animation from the morning to the evening, luminosity, etc.
This is not only a detail if the gnome desktop theme can follow the user environment.
The google personalised home page is working like that for the background.
Thanks

Utunes: Itunes clone for ubuntu.

Yeah we all know amarok already does this effectively (though sometimes buggy under gnome) and we also have gtk-pod which I personally dont like. I think we should have our own dedicated Ipod media player "Utunes" as so many people have I pods and want to use them just as they do on windows/mac. Recently novell did a survey of what linux users most wanted ported. Itunes came in the top ten.
Apple should have already ported Itunes to linux and that annoys me as they rip off konquror and call it safari but they cant even be bothered to support the ipod on linux!

Double-clicked files should not be executed

Written by xiota the 5 Mar 08 at 12:08. Category: Others.

Double clicking should only run applications that are already installed (most likely through apt). Executables should not be executed when double-clicked. This idea does not affect data files (such as pdf, png, svg, odf, mp3, ogm, mkv, avi, xyz, etc.) -- only executables, files with the +x permission set.
Clicking and double-clicking on icons is too easy. What if a user accidentally double clicks a script "wipe-out-home-directory.sh" when intending only to select for deletion? ... Good bye data. ... This might happen while tapping on a touchpad to drag to the trash. Two-taps = execute. Two-taps+slide = drag. This distinction would be difficult for people with a tremor or people in a situation that mimics a tremor, like a moving vehicle.
Executables and scripts should require a right click, possibly with additional confirmation, to decrease the chance of executing a file unintentionally. This would be equivalent to typing the path to an executable at a terminal to prevent users from running files they do not intend to run.

Offer a version of Ubuntu that comes "bare." Eliminate large, non-essential applications such as Open Office, Ekiga, Rythmbox, Evolution, Pidgin, Gimp, etc. Doing this would allow users to pick and choose the applications they wish to use. It would also be great when HDD space is limited, such as Solid State Drive based laptops.
Alternatively you could allow users to choose which applications are installed by letting them customize it during the live install.

1) A customizable installation (with checkboxes o something similar) you will be able to choose what packages do you want. You will can select or unselect the programs that ubuntu install as a default, if you dont need an email client you will can unselect it...
2) Integrate in 1 DVD unbuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu... you need only select what desktop do you want and what packages (see nº1)
"Ubuntu should be available as a live/install DVD that comes with Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and perhaps other desktop environments. Ideally, it would have equal priority to the CDs that only come with one, which would include being released at the same times. When booting from the disk, users should have an option of which environment to use. When installing, users should be able to chose which environments to install, and have options for installing additional packages designed for those environments (like the gnome and kde packages).
This would allow multiple people who prefer different environments to use the same installation disk. It would be more convenient for people who want to have e.g. both KDE and Gnome. It would make it easier for people new to Linux to learn which environment they prefer. It would make it easier for lesser used environments to gain new users. It would put all supported desktop environments on a more equal ground, rather than sanctioning one as the only "real" and "official" desktop environment for Ubuntu."

With Ubuntu on Dell machines in the USA, I'm sure this means better boot times, hardware integration, sound, network are all nice and good.
Ubuntu should really be pitching to be the default install (an option for the customer) on as many PCs as possible.

Put a size limit on Trash, so it gets emptied automatically after it gets above 1GB (or whatever). You could also empty it on a time schedule, or automatically delete files over a certain age.
