Clear-your-tracks privacy tool
Written by sebsauvage the 11 Mar 08 at 14:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome (and lots of applications) keep a history of most recently used files and directories.
For example, Nautilus keeps track of most recent directories.

There is no simple way to cleanup all these tracks.

Ubuntu lacks a privacy-cleaning tool, like CCleaner under Windows (sorry).

More complete Dell Laptop compatibility and support.
Written by jander99 the 11 Mar 08 at 06:51. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Last year Dell began offering Ubuntu preinstalled on a few of their laptops. Dell seems to really be embracing its users lately, and Ubuntu's Brainstorm is a derivative of Dell's IdeaStorm.

I'd like to see a more complete line of Dell laptop and desktops supported in Ubuntu more fully. I personally use a Dell Inspiron 9300, and while most hardware works out of the box, there a few quirks. LED Bluetooth and WiFi, and strange ALSA mixing come to mind.

Perhaps Canonical and Dell can come to some sort of agreement in regards to laptop compatibility for those laptops still being used today (Mine was bought in July of 2005 and is still a great laptop).

With that said, IBM and Sony if I recall correctly have kernel modules for handling ACPI and BIOS quirks in their own way. There is currently no such easily accessible kernel module for Dell laptops, or HP laptops.

Most new computers bought today are laptops, so being able to fully support the hardware is greatly important. It might also be easier to implement some of the power-saving features described in other brainstorm ideas once the full capabilities of the hardware have been exposed to the operating system.

Bring the import of photos and videos from digital cameras to the next level
Written by david the 11 Mar 08 at 14:00. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Importing photos and videos works ok but is unintuituve and inconsistent.

Current problems :

- If you import photos with F-Spot, videos are forgotten.
- If you import photos with gThumb, the are not added to the F-Spot library.
- If you add photos to F-Spot from the hard-drive, they are copied by default instead of being referenced.

Possible solution :

gnome-volume-manager (or nautilus) could/should handle the importing task when a camera is connected by :

- Ask for some informations about the photos and videos (event, place, ...).
- Copy the photos and the videos locally in folders with a representative folder structure.
- Add the photos to the F-Spot library (by referencing them) if F-Spot is installed.
- Add the photos to the gThumb library (by referencing them) if it's installed.
- Simplify (could be remove the part that handle importing content from a digital camera) the the import dialog of f-Spot and gThumb.

OpenOffice with (real) native GTK
Written by fragro the 11 Mar 08 at 11:07. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

LiveUSB
Written by Taku the 28 Feb 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.

It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.

The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.

Developer comments
This was implemented by two separate projects! Both Usb-creator (see the blueprint) and Usblive (see its website) allow you to build a live USB system on Intrepid.
The first one is available on the repository, and usblive in this PPA.

Push for partnerships with other hardware vendors
Written by Veejay the 28 Feb 08 at 14:41. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Given the success (as far as I know) of your Dell partnership, please do everything possible to seek alliances with other vendors, as it will reinforce the idea that Ubuntu is a viable alternative to other operating systems and will provide better hardware support for current Ubuntu users.

Dell is offering new models based on Ubuntu (recently the XPS M1330 in a few countries), proof that the business model makes sense.

Developer comments
We have an active partnership program and are open to discussions with hardware vendors. See: http://www.ubuntu.com/partners/hardwareprogramme

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.
