Focus on 64-bit desktop system
Written by evil the 5 Mar 08 at 14:35. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make installation of 64-bit on desktop easier. There are many obstructions such a Flash, Opera, Skype etc. And many MANY others...

Many users still use 32-bit Ubuntu just because they scare - complicated setup of 64-bit means less users > Less desktop users means less topics at support phorums > less help > more (unsolved) problems for new 64-bit users.

All new computers are 64-bit (Intel/AMD). Be more oriented to new "standard" desktop computers and take the advantages!

Yes, it's a 64-bit world ;-)

better DVD support
Written by diophant the 29 Feb 08 at 01:14. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
DVD support is still not so easy to get, due to
content scrambling. Scripts like automatix provide
this relatively easily, but it could not hurt to have
a straightforward path to get DVD playback support.
Stick in a DVD, and it plays. DVD players could also become
simpler. I use xine or mplayer but it would be nice to have
the simplicity of the DVD player in OS X.

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection
Ubuntu

Priority : Medium

Implementation : Unknown

Written by Alan Pope the 28 Feb 08 at 13:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Decrease number of ttys by default
Written by gatsby the 28 Feb 08 at 15:29. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think the 6 ttys available by default are an exageration for the common user who doesn´t use it, wasting memory resources.

Joypad USB
Written by nkts20 the 28 Feb 08 at 18:46. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if Ubuntu comes by default with a software which would let you configure your USB joystick.

It's frustrating when you plug a generic usb joystick and can't do anything with it as you could on Windows.

More flexible Preferred Applications and behaviors configuration
Written by jmb0007 the 29 Feb 08 at 19:23. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
rhythmbox, totem, pigdin are some of the some default applications for Ubuntu.
We should find a way to allow every body to use it's own preferred applications

The "Preferred applications" and "Removable Drives and media selector" should be merged in a "Preferred Applications and behaviors".
Some new categories should be add like :
-Instant messaging
-burn cd (preferred app for Places-> CD/DVD Creator)
-Search files (preferred app for Places-> shearch for files)

There are a lot of idea on default application :
- idea #1675: Better Preferred Applications dialog
- idea #1276: Create a global preference for media formats
- idea #1150: Gnome applet with favorite applications
- idea #1686: Make VLC & Banshee default Media Players
- idea #374: Quod Libet as the default Music organizer

A centralize configurations for "Preferred Applications and behaviors" will be a good solutions for all this ideas

Make ubuntu low-resolution compatible.
Written by asdf21 the 29 Feb 08 at 01:53. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's impossible to modify anything in ubuntu with resolutions under 1024x768.
My PC has a CRT monitor, with a max resolution of 1024x768, but only at a 60hz refresh rate, so i have to run it in 800x600.

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

Possible solutions and further explanation:

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.

Create Simple Wireless Mesh Networking Software   forum
Written by diablo75 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:45. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is what's being used in the OLPC's, which allow small villages to essentially build their own wireless mesh networking infrastructure that works and shares traffic overhead (IEEE 802.11s). You could imagine having a little utility on your Ubuntu PC that would scan for such wireless mesh networks, allow you to connect, act as a server/client node, share files, chat, and the sky is pretty much the limit from there. People could begin hosting their own webpages from their PC for free, using nothing but radio waves.

If you utilize the bandwidth and full-duplex potential of 802.11n wireless networking, you could create large decentralized mesh networks that could be very fast, much faster than cable Internet access.

Untangle Nautilus from desktop background properties
Written by oencke the 10 Mar 08 at 00:04. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
When I launch
gksudo nautilus /
in Ubuntu the various desktop backgrounds configured for the compiz cube faces get overwritten by the default ubuntu human style. The gnome panel properties get reset, too.

I think this is unacceptable and kills a consistent user experience with unexpected changes that come out of the blue sky and are hard to revert back from.

Mount all partitions from the file system with relatime!
Written by hqxriven the 2 Mar 08 at 02:09. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Fedora 8, Mandriva 2008 and Pardus are using relatime in its partitions while the Ubuntu still does it automatically.

According to the wiki of Mandriva 2008 this option is the following:

"http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Notes#Faster_operations_o n_partitions

By default, the installer configures file systems to use the relatime option. This option greatly reduce the amount of I/O spent by the system in updating access date when a file is read or when a directory is browsed. Thus the load of both desktop and server machines is greatly reduced and lot of I/O tasks complete faster.

For laptops, the installer still default to noatime in order to ease power management.

Similarly, the sync option is no more used for FAT file systems such as on floppies. It has been replaced by the flush option which make operations way faster on such FAT formated devices."

I know that this subject has already been well commented ...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/145332

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/160450

"ext3 partitions should be mounted with relatime/noatime for everyone to reduce unnessary disk activity, prevent useless unparking of harddisk heads for laptop users and increase performance (reading from disk or cache means writing to disk to update atime)"

Replace syslogd with more modern implementation
Written by tj the 29 Feb 08 at 10:10. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Let's face it. sysklogd is old and lacks in features. There is actively developed alternative called rsyslog [1] with huge array of features [2] (e.g. logging to a RDBMS). I would love to see the aging syslogkd replaced with rsyslogd by hardy+1 release. Looks like it's packaged for hardy already in universe [3] (though it's lacking backend support for other RDBMS than MySQL).

make Caps Lock another Return key
Written by Harridu the 2 Mar 08 at 17:57. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice to get an option in system configuration to replace the Caps Lock functionality (a relict from the old teletype printers) in favor of another Return key for the left hand.

Reason: Most people use the right hand to handle the mouse or trackball. Since both existing Return keys on a PC keyboard are on the right hand side only, you have to let go the mouse much too often to accept the defaults in on-screen menus, for example. Another return key on the left side would improve typing speed.

Of course Ubuntu cannot change the writing on the Caps Lock key.
