Restoring the bootloader by Ubuntu installation CD
simpler grub reinstallation (#30123)

If I install Windows after Ubuntu, it's impossible to boot Ubuntu until I install again GRUB following several instructions.
My idea is adding the option "Restore bootloader" in the list which appears when Ubuntu installation CD start. The aim is to offer a simple way to restore GRUB without loading a live distribution, opening a terminal and following a long series of instructions

[Edit 06/03/2008]
In my opinion, the user SHOULDN'T boot the Ubuntu Live Distro. It would be an unuseful waste of time.
Instead, it should be possible to select a new option among those ones of the startup menu of the CD.

Improve file/folder sharing experience (Samba)

Currently it is very difficult to setup and control access to shared folders without editing conf files and reading detailed instructions on all the variables. I propose that sharing (specifically Samba) be given a well worked GUI and some real TLC to bring it up to standard with the experience on Windows or OS X.

For example, by default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

I propose the Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

People around the globe that are using/concidering using Ubuntu are afraid that some of their hardware won't work for them. And some are frustrated to buy additional add-on cards to work around unsupportad onboard chips. All this could be avoided with a lookup in an ubuntu Hardware Database Website.

Some problematic hardware can be used with more or less work if helping information is available together with the hardware compatabillity data.

The hardware database can be found at http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

From idea #47: The data should then be available in a format that is simple for users to browse on-line when considering new hardware.

Offer to create a separate /home partition and use existing ones
offer to create a separate /home partition (#156177)

A separate partition for /home has been proposed for a long time in the forums. It implies some risks, though, so based on disk size Ubiquity should estimate the amount of space that should be left for / or whether a separate partition should be made at all. Then...

-The first time an user installs Ubuntu, he is given the option to set a separate /home. This option is selected by default, with a size for each partition based on a sane guess:

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7958/firstinstallaro2.png

-Of course, he can just choose not to set a separate /home. This option will be selected by default if the results of the system test suggest that's the best thing to do.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6498/firstinstallbfs6.png

-Manual install is also possible. Selecting it greys out everything related to separate /home, since it's implied that the user doesn't want to be guided.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7976/firstinstallcvc2.png

-If the user set a separate /home, the next time he installs Ubuntu a new option appears and is selected by default, prompting to use the existing /home partition. All other options are still available, though.

I have always used a separate /home as well. Keeping /home after reinstallations is one major reason which has been mitigated by ubiquity preserving /home now (I didn't test that yet, though).

Either way ubiquity (the Live CD installer) should point this out clearly.

The other reason is that I want to use it from multiple Linux installations, but that's mostly a geek use case.

I have no idea what size / and /home should have by default,
I always use 6 GB for / and the rest for /home, but if someone wants to use huge databases, that'll break.

Thus I think we should stick to our current partitioning and rather improve the UI for keeping /home. There is always manual partitioning for people who actually care.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

nautilus should reserve place for all the icons first then load the thumbnails

try opening a really huge directory full of images that is sorted by modification date, nautilus acts crazy for like a minute before it could load up all the thumbnails. images get thrown around in every direction as it loads more and more images and tries to load their thumbnails of various sizes at the same time..

i think nautilus should load the full list of files from the directory first and fully sorts them before it starts to load the thumbnails..

Don't delete human theme

If ubuntu 8.10 decides to change the theme, also retain the current theme: human. Because I think there are many people who do not like the new theme and prefer to use human.

Make the startup from GDM to Gnome (completely started desktop) more smooth
Written by boteeka the 1 Jul 08 at 14:57. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Currently the Ubuntu startup process is quite nice from Grub to GDM. But once I log in, from GDM to a completely started Gnome desktop (where all the panels and applets and icons on the desktop are started) I see a brown background for a while, then the wallpaper appears, and the upper and lower panels start to show up, it stays like this a couple of seconds, then applets start to appear, and finally Gnome finishes starting. It would be more smooth, if we could have a nice progress indicator while Gnome is starting, and once everything is started, then display the desktop and panels. Maybe with nice looking transitions (fade in/out).

Enhance Drivers manager
Written by ilembitov the 4 Jul 08 at 10:02. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
The point here is that Drivers manager should not only download restricted drivers, but it should solve all hardware-related issues where possible. I mean, it should recognize your hardware and download all the drivers available in the repos for you - when the drivers needed aren't on the install CD.

Developer comments
Hi,

There is work under way to enhance the driver manager (called "jockey") to handle more drivers, e.g. printer drivers. Much of this should be seen in the next release.

Change the default screensaver from black to ubuntu logo

We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.

I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.

Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
Written by rsingh the 1 Jul 08 at 11:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the things included in Hardy was ufw (Uncomplicated firewall wall), but everything has to be done via CLI. There is a very nice GUI frontend being developed for it and it would be nice if it is bundled as a default package.

Banshee-like notifications and shuffle/repeat buttons
Written by fmorel90 the 7 Jul 08 at 21:39. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some things about Banshee bug me, but I love the way it does notifications when changing songs. Rhythmbox only shows the title, artist, and album. Banshee shows the album art and has a button that allows me go to the next song and the little circle tells me how much time I have left before the notification disappears.

Also, as far as I can tell, Rhythmbox only supports Repeat All, not Repeat 1 (I have to search for 1 specific song to repeat it). I like the way Banshee does the repeat and shuffle buttons as the icon changes instead of looking like a pressed button.

Edit: I guess I should have added "for Rhythmbox" at the end of the title.

Enable users to set the "places" folders to other folders
Written by neotenshi the 8 Jul 08 at 14:12. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I explain : in the "Places" menu, there are shortcuts to folders like "Documents", "Music", "Videos" and so on. These shortcuts lead to the corresponding folder in the user's home.
This is great but we should be able to simply change the folders these shortcuts point to. I don't know if it's already possible but, if it's the case, it isn't as "obvious" as it would be (e.g. add a right-clic menu entry). This is already possible in Windows with the "My Documents" folder, why not in Ubuntu ?

The interest of it is that, maybe the user's documents aren't in their home folder. One short example :
I have an external HD drive, on which are stored my documents. One folder in it has been set to be the Windows' "My Documents" folder, so that when I save files in My Documents, it automatically goes to my HD. I would like to be able to do the same with Ubuntu, but mounting my HD drive as /home wouldn't work because my folders aren't named the way linux does for /home folders. In that case, such an option would be very useful !

Have a nice day

Dont Sideline the Side Panels,Preview Panel and Harddisk Browser
Written by dragoninsane the 8 Jul 08 at 17:52. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Whether any theme makes it into ibex is debatable but integrating Side panel is main idea. There are two side panels

*-First: Display directory tree or media on hard disk such as local drives, home folder, network drive, external disk/usb device.ipod or mp4 player, camera etc
*-Second: Preview photos, icons in sidebar, file information etc

This is link to the screenshot of mockup sidepanel in nautilus:
http://i38.tinypic.com/27ypcgj.jpg -side panel
i agree its not my creation but idea is "To have Side Panel
on both sides preferably"

Create an iLife kind of package that you can download for Ubuntu.
Written by Lazymonkey44 the 8 Jul 08 at 04:18. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu could team up with open Source (Or even non-open projects) to bring users a competitor to iLife on the mac. This would definitely helped popularize Ubuntu. This would be a download so that we could keep ubuntu on a CD. Or if there ends up being 2 Versions of ubuntu (CD $ DVD) then you could put it on the dvd one.

woobly windows
Written by ktulu77 the 9 Jul 08 at 08:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New

I steak about the compiz effect that makes the windows soft.(not active by default).

I think we need to enhance this compiz plugin:

- disable (or reduce resistance) the effect that makes the windows resisting to the edges of the screen. Each time i move a window i feel like the window is resisting to me(particulary for the top and the bottom screen edge). I know we can change that in ccsm but it is not the default option.

- enhance the maximize effect: it is buggy and not smooth even with good graphic cards.
