Make Ubuntu look better

Ubuntu is not (imo) the best looking OS out there, not even close to. I have som ideas to make Ubuntu look great.
Ideas:
* SVG icons.
* A theme that apply to EVERY application.
* More then just human theme.
* Better menus. Like the KDE4 or OpenSUSE menu.
* More then just a brown wallpaper included.
* Fresh up the look of synaptic, make it look like "Install or Uninstall programs", maybe a Apple influenced theme.
* Just one activity bar, like in Windows.
* Not just a blank activity bar, make it look more like Windows or at least make it look better.
* Stop making the screen flicker when starting up, like in Fedora ( think it was called X11 fst or something like that)
* Nicer icon theme, like Crashbit on gnome-look.
Well that just a few of my thoughts about how to make Ubuntu look better.

Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE
|

gnome-system-monitor provides a cleaner interface than Windows "Task Manager", and provides many useful features including list of processes running, memory and network usage, etc.
This functionality should be more accessible by key binding it by default to CTRL-ALT-DELETE as Windows does--as this is more familiar to users coming from Windows. The current key binding for CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.
gnome-system-monitor is an idle interface for monitoring the system and killing processes without using the terminal and provides an interface for doing this that most are already familiar with. Changing it's key binding would make it's functionality much more accessible.

Run an application from System Monitor

the problem: Sometime the gnome-panel hangs...
If I close with the system monitor, it's impossible (for me) to execute it another time.
It's possibly to have a Run Option on System Monitor, like Windows has?
Thanks a lot, and, as always, excuse my poor english.

Kde 4.1 for Intrepid Should Work Better, And Ubuntu Should make its own Icon Set

I am using Kde 4.1 on my computer, while overall it looks better than 4.0, I have several complaints. First of all, can Kubuntu make its own KDE 4 Start menu icon? I mean how long would that take, two seconds? Second of all, can Kubuntu also make icons for the shut down , logout, restart, hibernate, etc.? Because right now all of the icons are the same when in 4.0 they were different. I used to have lock screen/logout widget, but since the icons are the same ugly kubuntu computer widget, I can't tell them apart. Furthermore, I wish it was more obvious how to move the plasma widgets in 4.1, but I suppose this is just a learning curve.

I don't know if this is an avant-windows-navigator error or if it's a gnome error but I think that when I have 4 desktops and compiz cube with transparencies it don't have to show me the same 4 docks on the 4 sides.
I can attach a file with demo.
Sorry about my english.

Ubuntu comes with a ram disc built in and i bet there is tons of people who dont know it even exists
it lives in /dev/shm
it is a auto resizing ram disc and like all good ram discs it will be wiped when ever you log of or pc reset.
when ubuntu is installed there should be a link to it in nautilus and in kde there should be a link in Konqueror

Add 4th button for minimizing to icon, stop abusing Close/Minimize buttons

Currently windows have three buttons: Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close. Many programs like Rhythmbox and Pidgin have an additional mode with unique functionality, either as an applet, as an icon in the "system tray" or in the "notification area".
Getting the app into this configuration differs from one program to the next, and developers often abuse the functionality of the Close or Minimize button, since no dedicated button exists for this:
* Gaim/Pidgin iconifies when you press the Close button.
* Skype iconifies when you press the Close button.
* Amule quits when you press Close, and can be configured to iconify when you press Minimize.
* Rhythmbox quits when you press Close.
* Gnome-RDP iconifies when you press Close.
It's a mess.
There should be a dedicated 4th button on the window for applications that support this mode, as there is in eMule. Applications that don't have this functionality will just have the standard 3 buttons, in the same way that fixed-size dialog boxes only have 1 button (they don't include the Maximize or Minimize buttons since they don't have this functionality).
I'm imagining something that looks like this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=77153&d=1215701439
All can be iconified or restored by clicking the icon in the notification area, which is apparently in the GNOME HIG, but this doesn't necessarily apply to other window managers.

Select several windows in Gnome

Gnome does not allow the selection of several windows in the task bar in order to perform the same operation on all of them. For instance, if you want two send two windows to other desktop, you have to select the first window, send it to the other desktop, and then repeat this operation with the second window. It would be much easier if it would be possible to select both windows (using the Ctrl or Shift keys to tell the user interface that you want to multi-select), and then selecting just the operation that you want to perform.

Maintain a website with latest deb packages
|
|
Written by carpex the 9 Jul 08 at 13:17. Category: Others.
Related to: Synaptic package manager.
New

|
Ubuntu should maintain a website repository, similar to getdeb.net, with debian packages of latest versions of some relevant Ubuntu packages and other software. Getdeb.net is very good but the software and package offer on this website is limited.
Providing access to the latest versions of packages through a standard repository may lead users to inadvertently install unstable or undesired packages through Synaptic or apt-get. A simple website would allow users hungry for specific new software updates to access compatible programs without having to build from source.
You want Wine 1.1? nspluginwrapper 1.0? Songbird 0.6.1? You could get them on this website without having to add extra repositories.
I think a lot of problems arise when packages installed by building from source coexist with other versions of the same packages installed from debs. What drives people to build from source is the unavailability of most recent versions in the repos.
NOTE: The debian sid/experimental repos are poorly described and documented, are not specific to Ubuntu and many packages are not updated. See the three examples I gave above.

The user should be able to customize the color of the mouse pointer.
This will make Ubuntu users able to personalize their computer to a greater extent.
