Make it possible to mark applications "Disable Compiz when running"
Written by johan the 3 Mar 08 at 21:54. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
This is what I want:

I want to be able to mark applications "Not Compiz compatible" so that Compiz shuts down when I launch a game or some other 3D-heavy application. This is something I want to improve stability and performance for such applications.

Developer comments
This will be automatically fixed with the arrival of DRI2 and updated drivers. There is no point in adding a plugin or workaround like suggested. The caveat here is that the initial support for DRI2 is only for intel's i915 at the moment... maybe with i965 following shortly thereafter.

When the OpenSource drivers for ATI (radeon, radeonHD) and nVIDIA (nouveau) will support DRI2 is still unknown. But the only way to fix the mentioned bugs is via DRI2. There is not much action that can come from our (Canonical) side as we don't have any experienced upstream Xorg developer in our team.

Metadata editor for Nautilus
Written by johan the 18 Oct 08 at 08:08. Category: Usability. Related to: Nautilus. New
This idea is about improving the nautilus file manager to allow for editing of metadata of files without launching a separate application.

It's not just about id3-tags on mp3's but also documents, images, videos, etc.

I think this could be a great addition to Nautilus, and make the overall user experience a bit better.

Could be implemented either as a built in feature or as a plugin.

Make it possible to change owner/permissions in right-click "properties"
Written by johan the 9 Oct 08 at 23:17. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
My idea is to implement some functionality to be able to change owner of a file/folder using "Properties" under right-click of a file/folder. As it is now it only says "You are not the owner of this file and can't change permissions" (might differ depending on language, this was a rough translation from Swedish). I would like to be able to change owner of this file/folder and have policykit or gksu ask for permissions to do this if I'm not already root. Sometimes I fiddle around in console and leave stuff on my Desktop that isn't owned by my user account. This would be a nice solution to my problem, and any other problem which involves changing owner of file/folder.

Now that I think about it, I think the same could be applied if you try to empty your trashbin and you get errors because some files were owner by another user.

Proper database-support for Rhythmbox/Banshee
Written by johan the 16 Mar 08 at 00:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Amarok has had support for mysql and postgresql for some time now, and it's only fair that we get that for some gtk-jukeboxes too. I would like this to be implemented for Rhythmbox or Banshee, or, if there already is a competent gtk-app that does this, implement it by default with easy setuptool.

Developer comments
For sure Banshee will not implement this.

Simple checkbox-style GUI for customizing nautilus-actions
Written by johan the 4 Mar 08 at 23:27. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is an idea for a compromise that might make all those people happy that want some extra functionality added to nautilus right-click actions.

How about a simple GUI where you can check the boxes of the actions you want to access using the right mousebutton, and also sort out the order of the list to your liking.

Check for non-existing themes in gnome-profile upon first login
Written by johan the 29 Feb 08 at 21:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is what happends to me sometimes when I forget to clear the gnome-settings after reinstalling:

I get tons of error-messages complaining about this and that panel-applet that couldn't be found. Also the theme often looks strange, because I like to theme it a lot, and the themes aren't always still there after reinstalling.

I would like a simple little script that checks for all the parts of the currently selected theme and resets it to default if it can't find all the pieces.
