Include Flash programming tools
Written by bert.ubuntu the 30 Apr 08 at 04:26. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
A nice tool for that task would F4L (Flash for Linux) which you may find a deb on net (it will display but not actualy work).

Alternative tools like synfig are very poor documented. But if it's not possible to include fix F4L why not work on local documentation for synfig ?

It's really missing for web-developers.

Upgrade VirtualBox-OSE to 1.6.0
Written by mb the 4 May 08 at 09:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
VirtualBox is an X86 virtualization software, offered under proprietary and GPL license. In February 2008 Innotek and it's VirtualBox has been acquired by Sun.

On May 2, 1.6.0 version has been released which includes major changes like:
* Solaris and Mac OS X host support
* Seamless windowing for Linux and Solaris guests
* Guest Additions for Solaris
* A webservice API
* SATA hard disk (AHCI) controller
* Experimental Physical Address Extension (PAE) support
And also some fixes:
* VMM: reduced host CPU load of idle guests
* VMM: many fixes for VT-x/SVM hardware-supported virtualization
* Storage: better write optimization, prevent images from growing unnecessarily.
* Network: support PXE booting with NAT
* USB: fixed problems with USB 2.0 devices (experimental)
* Linux host: compatibility fixes with Linux 2.6.25
* Windows host: support for USB devices has been significantly improved; many additional USB devices now work
* Linux additions: several fixes, experimental support for RandR 1.2
* Linux additions: compatibility fixes with Linux 2.6.25

Ubuntu Hardy should have VirtualBox Open Source Edition updated to the newest, 1.6.0 version.

It's great Memtest86+ comes with Ubuntu. It may help people who get problems with the LiveCD, and instead of saying Ubuntu sucks, this tool shows that they hardware is damaged.

However, the version of Memtest86+ used is quite old. The newest 2.01 supports the latest hardware and I see no reason why it should'nt be updated.

Please bring latest Memtest86+ with Intrepid Ibex!

Add docx, xlsx, pptx, etc. support to OpenOffice and other Ubuntu Office suites
Written by Redrazor39 the 6 May 08 at 00:50. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.

Developer comments
As described in this feature list, OpenOffice 3, which will very likely be included in Ubuntu 8.10, will have import filters for MS OpenXML files.

Do not use Black Screen screensaver during installation
Written by webhamster the 18 Apr 08 at 20:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it is very confusing that during installation, the screen suddenly becomes black. It would be much better if there would be at least a simple image, so that the screen does not look like the computer just crashed.

Make YouTube work right out of the box
Written by probono the 24 Apr 08 at 16:26. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Without having to download, install, select anything. Make it just work right out of the box. Because your average joe isn't interested in the technical differences between gnash, libswfdec and flashplayer. He just wants his movie to play.

(Which works on both major other desktop OSes btw.)

We currently have Bluetooth 2.0 support (standard was released November 10, 2004).

We should add support for Bluetooth 2.1 (standard was released July 26, 2007).

We currently have full support for ACPI 1.0 and some support for ACPI 2.0.

We should get full support for ACPI 2.0 and also try to get full support for ACPI 3.0b.

ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is an open industry standard that defines common interfaces for hardware recognition, motherboard and device configuration and power management.

Change Ubuntu ISO labels - i386 to 32bit and amd64 to 64bit
Written by oencke the 21 Apr 08 at 19:58. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The i386 ISOs do not have anything to do with Intel or the 386 cpus specifically just as the amd64 are not specific to AMD processors. Additionally these descriptors are practically meaningless to non-techies.

What matters for the decision between the ISOs is the difference between 32bit and 64bit, not intel and amd, so why not just call them that way, and thus take away the burden of having to be a cpu technician to understand them?

EDIT: As a compromise, to avoid confusion of the x86/IA ISOs with those for other architectures, descriptors like PC32bit and PC64bit might also be acceptable as that is likely the maximum a home user knows about his or her computer.

Add extra GIMP plugins pack to the repository
Written by mihai007 the 24 Apr 08 at 10:03. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I just found some very very useful plugins for gimp at http://registry.gimp.org
It would be nice to have an entry in synaptic to install extra plugins for GIMP from there and not only!
This way we could benefit from all new features being developed by the community.

Add native support for low-latency audio
Written by Eldmannen the 9 Apr 08 at 20:01. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
With low-latency audio Ubuntu could professionally be used as Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), it would be good for audio professionals to accomplish recording, editing and processing of audio and multimedia, such as in music production.

This would make Ubuntu an appealing choice for professional audio artists.

Make hardware vendors aware of UbuntuHCL.org
Written by bbauto the 6 Apr 08 at 10:52. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make hardware vendors aware of www.ubuntuhcl.org
Will the vendors realy disregard let's say 1% possible market share?
Often just a tiny effort, could raise their rating from lets say 3 to 5?.
(personally i will always choose the product with rating 5)
The least one should expect from a vendor, is to find information how to install/tweak their product into Linux.
At ubuntuhcl.org they can se what the Linux users think of their product.

PulseAudio: Remember settings for programs
Written by sf_007 the 9 Apr 08 at 23:37. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If some crazy flash ads in Firefox start playing sound I mute those crazy bastards in PulseAudio, (I do not mute all the sound, so I can still listen to music). But once firefox is closed, those settings disappear!!! meaning: once I re-open firefox, flash has sound again!!!

I hate when those bastards just scare the hell out of me when I'm listening to music or something.... so I would like to have flash ALWAYS muted, something PulseAudio does not allow!
Why can't PulseAudio just remember these settings for each program?!?! Seems easy to implement...
It would be sooo nice...

PS: This is only possible in PulseAudio with the GUI installed: padevchooser

first ask all questions - then install - don`t ask in the middle
Written by Theodore the 3 Apr 08 at 20:19. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is concerning the graphical and the text based installer.

It`s a bad habit introduces by microsoft. Do not ask questions in the middle of the installation after you did already started to copy things.

(1) The user starts the installation.
(2) He is asked if he wants to install.
(3) Make as many hardware tests as you need.
(4) Now ask all needed questions.
(5) Install Ubuntu in one run. Tell the user he can no go away for perhaps X minutes.

Otherwise it`s annoying. Input answer, wait a bit, input answer, wait again over and over again. You can improve this!

Protect the core system packages in APT
Written by Auzy the 10 Apr 08 at 07:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is nothing stopping us as users from deleting core system packages such as grub accidentally. I could tell any ubuntu user to do it, and they may wreck their system.

We should make APT smarter.
* There should be at least 1 kernel for instance, and it should be in the boot manager.
* If grub is the active bootmanager, make sure they know their system wont boot on deletion.
* You delete Xorg-X11, and you'll be hanging in prompt.

We need to make it more foolproof, and have a infrastructure in place to warn users if they are making a potentially fatal mistake.

Every second comment here is "well, it should be in apt". Well, if we want people to use apt for everything and be actively using it, we need to make it safer. I cant uninstall windows from their add/remove programs for instance now can I? Yet, one wrong click in adept will totally kill kubuntu.

Please note: THIS SHOULD BE ADDED AS AN OPTION! By default it should be enabled, except make it easily disabled so everyone wins

PulseAudio: Ability to mute everything except "allowed programs"
Written by sf_007 the 10 Apr 08 at 16:38. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to mute all programs, except the ones I allow to have sound, for example:
Mute everything except the media player, why? because websites sometimes have some crazy ads that scare the hell out of us, how annoying!
Disabling every potential "annoyer" is hard:
-Sounds can come from many browsers
-each browser can have many plugins
-even non-browser programs can have annoying sounds
-and even if we do disable all that, once the program is closed those settings disappear! (see idea 6752)

Would be sooo nice to be able to do this, it would give us so much peace of mind, knowing no program will produce sound, except our media player with our favorite tunes (for example)....

Add OpenEXR support to graphics software such as GIMP, Krita, etc.

OpenEXR is a high dynamic range imaging image file format, released as an open standard.

OpenEXR, or simply EXR for short, is a deep raster format developed by ILM and very broadly used in the CG industry, both visual effects and animation.

Add native support for color channels 10 and 12 bit depth
Written by Eldmannen the 9 Apr 08 at 19:51. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Normally Linux (and other operating systems) have support for only 8-bit color per channel, resulting in a color depth of 24 bits.

Add support for 10, 12 and 16 bit per color channel, so we can have a color depth of 30, 36 and 48 bits.

This will allow for HDR (High dynamic range), medical imaging, etc. This will make Ubuntu great for professional use, graphics, science, medicine, etc.

The ATI FireGL V7350 graphics card supports 40-bit and 64-bit color.

Instead of just 16,777,216 colors, we could have over 4,294,967,296 distinct colors!
