Disable CAPSLOCK-Key!
Written by redd the 12 Mar 08 at 16:31. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The CAPSLOCK-key was really very helpful in the times of mechanical typewriters. But on a PC this key is nothing except annoying. I think everybody knows the problem of acidentALLY HITTING THIS KEY!!!

Ubuntu could solve this easily by disable the function of this Key. Make it to a normal shift key, please!!

(Or even let me change this in "CapsLock key behavior" in gnome-keyboard-properties.)

Here some Weblinks:

Scibuntu: Ubuntu for Scientists
Written by Arioch the 12 Mar 08 at 09:09. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I work in Science. What about a fully featured flavour of Ubuntu filled with computational soft, programing tools, graphical representation capabilities, scientific text editing, publication database control...etc

That would make scientists life much more easy and would promote migration from W$ and OS systems to Ubuntu.

Temptative name: Scibuntu--Linux for Scientists

Enable SuperKaramba
Written by chapermann the 6 Mar 08 at 04:17. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We could use SuperKaramba as default in Ubuntu, or as an option to enable it.

Different Versions
Written by pofigster the 29 Feb 08 at 00:08. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu could benefit from having a simple "Home" version and a "Standard" version available for download. The simple version wouldn't have nearly as many options visible to the user and would be designed for a non-techie who wanted to use Ubuntu. The standard would of course be the version of Ubuntu we all know and love. The code would all be the same, but a different front end that's both simplified and Linux at the same time.

Underclock CPU when afk or screensaver running
Written by Eldmannen the 20 Mar 08 at 18:29. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a 2.13 GHz CPU. When the CPU is not under load, Ubuntu underclocks itself to 1600 MHz. (Really nice feature).

I would like if I am afk (away from keyboard) or the screensaver gets activated, it can underclock itself even more, like to 1000 MHz only.

Maybe in sleep mode, it could be only 1 MHz.

Gnome for users, KDE for researchers
Written by nitrofurano the 24 Sep 08 at 21:40. Category: Usability. Related to: Kubuntu. New
Being mainly a Gnome-Ubuntu user since before Ubuntu 4.10 (and maybe forever), and after testing the alpha 6 of Kubuntu 8.10 live cd, i really can understand how many people (like me) considered KDE 4.1 a complete disaster, and Gnome having more and more users as the time goes.

As well i readed news and blogs of some KDE4 developers a bit disapointed of the feedback their long time work were considered.

My idea is about Gnome being now more clear a window manager made for users, and KDE for experimental GUI researchers.

And interesting how the taste of former and actual KDE users used to have different tastes about it: there are people (like me) loves simplicity, minimalism, usability and productivity; there are people likes demoscene-like effects on a GUI; there are people loves seeing Vista/MacOS-X copycats on Linux; and there are people likes to try innovations about usability.

This can be good when considering QT and KDE being splitted into different window managers QT-based, which can work sinergically - and maybe this can be considered the main future of KDE, just a base for GUI experimentation research.

Install GIMP by default in one window (gimpshop)
Written by kramer65 the 19 Sep 08 at 10:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: GIMP Image Editor. New
I am trying to use the gimp more and more, but one of the biggest drawbacks I see is the fact that it are all different windows. I have to work in the image AND constantly change settings in the main window. This is very annoying since I constantly have to go back to my taskbar to "search for" the gimp, change a setting, and go back to the image.
This is very annoying when you've got many images open which you're working on and the taskbar is therefore full of things..

It should come in one window by default.

ps. I tried to install gimpshop several timees but it always gives me errors or doesn't work.

Start videos at boot time and splash screens
Written by tester the 19 Sep 08 at 16:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
instead of just showing progress bar at the start, Ubuntu can show a nice video, this will make it much more beautiful and let the user the feeling that Ubuntu is booting fester.

start Video is also good for openoffice and gimp Splash Screens

let Kubuntu/KDE to be the default more advertised distro. And Ubuntu/GNOME an extra.

If you prefer Kubuntu KDE vote +1
If you prefer Ubuntu GNOME vote -1

I wonder what will be the result....

EDIT: ok, the idea is stupid. Please stop voting :)

Complicated idea, but could save a *lot* of power.
Written by WolfiE the 20 Aug 08 at 18:45. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A desktop computer currently contains a very powerful cpu and graphics card, which use a lot of power. Would it not be possible to have the equivalent of a nano-itx or other low power board, but in a pci slot. This card would do all of the web browsing, video/mp3 playing and anything else which, like most stuff done on computers requires relatively little processing power. The main pc would then "kick in" only when it is really needed (Ie to play 3d games). "But what about the boot times ?" well think about this. Gigabyte make a component called an iRam, which I am sure many of you know about. Why not add a similar device, but on the same card. The contents of the "ramdisk" would be filled by the on-card processor, to allow the main motherboard to be custom booted to carry out the required task. I'm not really sure if this is "worth it", but if the card could be made cheap enough it would quickly "pay for itself". It could even have a "how much have I saved ?" button, calculating how many units of electricity the card has saved since installation. Good idea or chocolate teapot ?

Torrents running whilst pc is off
Written by javad the 30 Apr 08 at 13:33. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ok so im not sure if this is the right place for this..but im just thinking out loud.

a device that will let your torrents downloading but yu can switch off your pc! torrents carry on downloading. External USB hard drives are available freely these days. So maybe something in buntu that will let the juice flow from the USB to the hard drive after the pc has been switched off.

Maybe an option in the shutdown menu..."torrents"...which shuts down everything else but gives the cpu like 3% power consumption compared to normal...

...oh and this has "green" written all over it!

Bragging rights over Windows and Macs? check!!!

Install Wine if a Window's Partition is detected during install
Written by tbrminsanity the 1 May 08 at 21:29. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In conjunction with idea #7953: Wine Windows program on Windows partition

During the install process if Ubuntu can successfully mount and control the Windows partition it should ask the user if they also want to install Wine as well.

If #7953 is also in place it would configure Wine to use the Windows partition as the default environment to run Windows programs from.

free CDs or better Ubuntu?
Written by loveandequalityforall the 2 May 08 at 03:15. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
here is my point if they are not making a profit and some what losing money there should not be any free CD because it cost too much money and i rether have a better Ubuntu than to give free CD's around! I know is for publicity but making Ubuntu better gives Ubuntu publicity like FireFox they never gave out CD with it and they got famous! I care for the product not run it dry and go for the next one!

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu Linux developer Canonical He also spent considerable time talking about his desire to see Ubuntu become more commercially viable, and noted Canonical right now isn't profitable. The organization now provides Ubuntu free as a download and even provides free CDs with the Linux OS.

As title, and set it to advise the user if the hd is going to dead (by email or by pop up window). As we know the hd is the most delicate part of our pc... It will be great if in case of non passed test there some suggestion and an easy app for backup the system.

More Windows-Friendly User Interface
Written by jdennis_99 the 2 May 08 at 15:07. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Windows, the control box (little icon in the top left hand corner of the window on the title bar) has an exit function if you double-click it. This is a tieover from Windows 3.1 when you didn't have the X button in the top right hand corner.

Old habits die hard - I always close a window by double-clicking on the control box rather than clicking the X button. Unfortunately, Ubuntu doesn't actually close the window - it just opens the control menu. It would be very useful for legacy Windows users such as myself if some of the commands were brought across to Ubuntu. It would also mean that future Windows users would find it easier to migrate.

Another example is Alt+F4, which is not fully implemented in Ubuntu - it closes down apps, but not Ubuntu itself.

Instant migration: user interfaces mimicking Windows XP and/or Mac
Written by granadajose the 2 May 08 at 15:10. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have seen that many users are reluctant to change from Windows XP/Mac to Ubuntu because the Ubuntu graphical interface, despite being very easy, seems to too awkward to them.

Many people are happy with their Windows XP operating system, because they have been using it during many years and they don't want a change too radical. In fact, that's why many users are turning their backs to Windows Vista.

It would be great to provide some kind of advanced "theme" option to allow these users to use Ubuntu with a user interface quite similar to the one that they know. I'm not talking just about graphical aspects (it's obvious that the Ubuntu style and colours should be respected), I mean providing them in a direct way the functions that they use the most, for instance, the location of items, the shortcut keys most frequently used. This would allow newcomers to begin using Ubuntu right from the start.

This strategy was used in the past to move users from WordPerfect to Microsoft Word (the option to emulate wordPerfect was included in Word 6 and Word 97), and it would be a perfect way to gain many users that have came to think of Windows XP as the standard way of using a computer. The case of Mac could be similar.

I know that there are packages that do something similar to my proposal, but they are not 100% reliable, and they are not easy to install. A new user of Ubuntu won't investigate about this if s/he doesn't know how to perform the most basic tasks. This should be offered, for instance, as an installation option in Wubi (or in the install screen that offers to import the Windows account information), in order to show them in just a minute, that this great operating system is able to let them do their everyday tasks.

I would also like just to point that this idea does not pretend to actually change Ubuntu's interface. Ubuntu's CURRENT interface would still be the MAIN interface of Ubuntu.

This idea just proposes that, just as a transition aid, offer the choice to Windows XP & Mac OS of getting an interface more similar to the interfaces that they are used to. This would let them know that Ubuntu is able of doing everything they do with their former operating system and, in time, they would turn to the Ubuntu normal interface.

Rename Daemons to services
Written by Auzy the 5 May 08 at 15:55. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We should rename the term "daemon" to "service" where-ever possible, as its more user friendly, and users are more used to service as a technical term.

The term "service" requires less people to look up our technical jargon and its more in-line with what almost every other OS (except BSD mainly) calls them.

It also sounds a bit more professional. Calling them services consistantly everywhere makes the OS more polished, and more usable.

This is a succinct copy of 8078 by brainworker.
