Sell an Ubuntu branded mp3 player.
Written by bigfox the 7 Mar 08 at 20:32. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sell an Ubuntu branded MP3 player in the Canonical store.

A good one to consider is the Meizu M6 SL

It supports Ogg, Flac, and Xvid and works very well with Linux. It doesn't require any special drivers or software.

Its firmware can even be updated from Linux, just put 2 files on the root of the devices flash drive and it will find them and update itself when powered on.

Its UI can also be skinned and even completely revamped so it can be made to look more like the Ubuntu UI.

More information on the device can be found here:
http://en.meizu.com/product_m6sl.asp

As of yet, RockBox doesn't support this device, but a port is being considered.

Make Totem the Universal "Media Player"
Written by progressnerd the 5 Mar 08 at 00:53. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Ubuntu, Totem is labeled "Movie Player", but it can actually play almost every type of media, with the right codecs installed. It's the closest thing Ubuntu has to a "Windows Media Player", and with a little extra effort, it can become a more fully universal media player.

For starters, Totem should appear in the Applications menu as "Media Player" -- it is already far more than just a "Movie Player". Second, Ubuntu developers should invest extra effort to ensure Totem can play virtually every media type, both standalone and as a Firefox plugin. For example, I know there are Real Media formats that Totem can play standalone but is incapable of playing as a plugin.

Run theme chooser on live cd start & install that theme as default

A single theme never is good for everybody: too dark, too light, too small or something. That's why the possibility for a user to select a desktop theme on the first start/logon would be useful. This should be done already in the start of a live-cd, for the best possible first impression. The installer should set the selected theme as default in the installed system, too.

This shouldn't be too hard to implement, just start gnome-appearance-properties (and kcontrol in KDE) on the first run.

ubuntu is a llot of problems for me.
Written by computoman the 1 Apr 08 at 16:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
1. You have software in the repositories such as otrs that does not install properly. Why do you not get the existing software to work before wanting to make wholesale changes to your system. i.e. directory structure change and serial port changes.
2. Why does not ubuntu install the full program on the base system. Example: Vim has to be reinstalled to get the full version. That is a waste of my time for something that should already be there.
3. It really bothers me that gnome is becoming so dependent on mono and the like. I have this strange feeling that ms will come back and haunt linux users with njot only patent threats, but the vulnerabilities that are inherent in microsoft based code.
4. All the traditional tools we used to use in linux to tweak the system have disappeared. Ubuntu seems so crippled.
5. With so much advertising of dell on ubuntu sites, it almost seems like a conflict of interests. The way dell is laying off people and allegedly having financial problems will they put the choke on ubuntu? If dell is going to screw over the american workforce, they do not need our business. We have eight dell computers. We will not be buying another dell - linux or not.

save package files
Written by dinar the 1 Apr 08 at 17:28. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
here paying for internet depends on traffic.

if after i install a programm with synaptic i write that package file to a disk or flash drive and bring then it to somebody he may be happy because he will not have to download it.

i know two ways to take package files:
1. aptitude download package_name
2. get from /var/cache/apt/archives

see also https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/23237 where i wrote about this.

i want that graphic user interface offers to save the package files to a place[ given by user].

also i myself will need this files, because i can install them to another ubuntu on my computer or after reinstalling sometime in the future.

i have[ made] special folder for program installers for windows. that programs are categorized in subfolders[ by me and not only me but in another folder is another categorization]. why not to make to save all packages in such folders automatically in ubuntu? or in a standart repositary-tree, as i know it is a some subfolder-structure.
and then should be a way to select some of all files needed to a program when exporting this program package file to a removable drive or a temporary/work folder.

i have seen/heard about a program that takes all installed driver files from windows - "driver genius professional". another idea is if possible/easy to implement/make not to waste disk space for package files and make package file from working files, and only "on-start"/"after-install" configuration files should be saved.

i have choosed "accessibility" because i say about user could easier access to packages files.. or i should better choose "installation"..

Standardise the folder names in "/media".
Written by hgibson the 1 Apr 08 at 11:31. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For example:
/media/disk/usb/size/NN
/media/disk/scsi/size/NN
/media/camera/usb/images/NN
/media/cell/bluetooth/images/NN
/media/cell/bluetooth/files/NN

This should only be for pluggable/attachable devices only. Those not connected permanently.

And then integrate the /media folder into the desktop virtual file systems.

And then submit a standard to freedesktop.org

Allow Volumes on Panel
Written by xvedejas the 1 Apr 08 at 22:02. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm talking about being able to see your CD drives and HDDs from gnome-panel. If maybe they could be accompanied with a usage bar as a preference, that would be great too. You can already put trash, computer, and home folders on the gnome-panel; but my volumes can only appear on the desktop. Why not allow either?

synaptic must be simple
Written by dragoninsane the 27 Mar 08 at 08:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
synaptic has very frustrating interface next it doesn't
mark dependencies by its own,
More silent installation of packages.
Packages ordering should be refined like themes, system applications and utilities, network related,fun/games etc
old libraries and external/third party libraries
too many dialogs makes things worst.
much better dialogs.i mean i don't want to see library files
all library needed should be installed minimal fuss with
libraries.
i don't want to understand jargon what library does what function,in turn its useless even if i understand.
better versioning and info.
better add/remove dialogs.by size,usage etc

Add Defrag in the life Cd.
Written by sisa989 the 27 Mar 08 at 00:54. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you install Ubuntu with other O.S. installed. You have the option "To Install in the free space contiguous", but if you don't defrag previusly the partiton, you would have problems with this option, beacuse you couldn“t make a partition with the real free space.

The solution is that you would chose the option "Make a defrag before you could choose make the partitions"

Sorry for my English ;)

Allow users to attach "bounties" to Ubuntu Brainstorm ideas
Written by Auzy the 29 Feb 08 at 11:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great if users could attach money to Brainstorm ideas. Its all good and well to post hundreds of ideas, but as things go, ideas which are posted first may not be the best ideas, but will climb to the top fastest (and will stay there, because people will vote for them on most popular).

Lets make it possible for people to donate $5 or so to their own ideas. Sure nobody may implement it, or the patch may not be accepted but it opens things up a lot more. Nobody loses either.

For those who think that this will turn linux coders into people who only code for money are wrong. There have been many bounties in the past, and they have not wiped out the many developers (me inclusive) who code as a hobby. Even with the gnome bounties in place, I still continued coding my application at the time for instance.

Anyway, at the end of the day, its not hard to implement, and it will do nothing but speed up development for highly wanted features (and maybe even organisations like gnome could use the money on spreading word about linux, or improving their hardware support).

Why if I choose Ubuntu I get incomplete OS?!
Written by spnova the 26 Mar 08 at 04:54. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've installed Ubuntu. It seems good, but when I wanted to connect my mobile phone I found drivers only for Windows and Mac on disc with drivers. When I wanted to connect my camera, I also found only drivers for Windows and Mac. I bought WiFi adapter but I found drivers only for windows!

If I want to install google desktop, I get simple version only with search, but windows and mac have complete version.

I suggest to make it so that user installing Ubuntu has the same ability like Windows and Mac users.

Walk toward Web Style GUI Instead of Desktop GUI
Written by EduardoWillians the 10 Mar 08 at 18:02. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Just use more HTML and (maybe) Ajax to build Ubuntu GUIs. It's simple and It would push Ubuntu one step ahead. Actually, It could turn Ubuntu on the most friendly OS.

Additional Start Menu
Written by travist120 the 2 Mar 08 at 03:56. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The current start menu / bar is great, but not for everyone. The thing that I miss the most from XP is the ability to have your most frequent applications by just clicking start. Sure, I only saved like 4 seconds, but it was almost something I didn't have to think about every time I wanted to open an application. I think that Ubuntu should have an alternative to the current start menu. I also don't think that it should be slab, because slab has no room for plugins. It should be something similar to slab, but with customization. It also should be new/fresh because a lot of the start menus I've tried are really slow, or they fail to do their job.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.
