Better dynamic icon placement

Sometimes, when a USB pen drive or hard drive is plugged in, it is auto mounted, but, sometimes, the icon placed on the desktop overlaps with the existing icons on the desktop. A manual refresh is required to rearrange the icons properly. Gnome should do it automatically.

Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!
WHAT THE HELL!
Who need that amount of screensavers?
I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?
Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?
For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Online Ubuntu compatible - PC Hardware Store
|
|
Written by madjr the 6 Mar 08 at 17:49. Category: Hardware support.
Related to: Nothing/Others.

An online Ubuntu PC hardware store is what people (aka "masses") need to fully make the jump to Ubuntu. Sell the hardware "known to work" (pre-installed Ubuntu computers and peripherals) and support those manufacturers who actually care about Linux compatibility.
when you purchase a Mac you know everything is compatible and everything you purchase at a APPLE STORE also is tested and works 100% with Mac OS.
but when you try Ubuntu on your own, there is always a risk that many of your hardware/peripherals may not work. The worst problem is YOU DON'T KNOW where to Purchase compatible hardware to FIX your problem.
If you can't fix your problem, then you are back once more in Windows... (be it a dialup modem, Usb modem, wireless card, bluetooth, printer, scanner, videocard, webcam, etc)
you always have the community to help + the guys at http://www.phoronix.com/ have always pitched in this area, but is not enough.
We need 100% Ubuntu compatible and tested hardware by canonical themselves to be sold online. Only sell what works (there is no need to test all the hardware in the world)
this would create a real market demand for "Linux compatible" hardware from manufacturers.
we can't support every piece of hardware like we have been doing, we need to support what WORKS NOW!
If this is implemented a few other good things will happen:
1- Less forums posts like these: "i can't get XXXX hardware to work, why doesn't it work! i got working hardware in windows or mac, ubuntu sucks blah blah"

7-Zip is open source software. Source code is under the GNU LGPL license. it is nice to install it default.
1. Install 7zip with other copression methodes like zip, tar, gzip
2. It automatically integrated with file-roller. So no need any other gui program or user don't want to know complex comand lines for compressing their data in 7zip.

When a folder is shared, the icon stays the same in nautilus. There is an icon that can be added to the folder to show that it is shared, but this icon should be automatically added so users know what folders are shared.
It would also be nice to have an option in the rightclick menu to "unshare"

Make the System default to Metric Units

Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.

Given the success (as far as I know) of your Dell partnership, please do everything possible to seek alliances with other vendors, as it will reinforce the idea that Ubuntu is a viable alternative to other operating systems and will provide better hardware support for current Ubuntu users.
Dell is offering new models based on Ubuntu (recently the XPS M1330 in a few countries), proof that the business model makes sense.

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

The forums are one of the most valuable resources in the Ubuntu community and we should make it as easy as possible for new users to find them. If you are coming from the windows world it may not even occur to you to look for a forum.
I am aware of the bookmarks to the Cannonical support pages which lead to the forums, but this level of indirection does not give enough credit to the value of the forums.
There should be a link next to the BBC News feed on the default Firefox bookmarks toolbar.
PCLinuxOS has several links on their toolbar including the forum and a site similar to gnome-look.org. I was impressed by this - it felt integrated and helps to draw beginners into the community.
There is a similar precedent; when you start xchat it defaults to opening the #ubuntu channel.

Automatically disable the touchpad when you are typing by specifying a number of seconds the touchpad stays inactive after you hit a button on the keyboard. This is very useful on laptops where it is very easy to accidentily touch the touchpad while typeing.

More consistent way to choose file associations

There are apparently a number of ways to choose the default application for a given file type. This should be more consistent. Ideally it should be possible when using the "Open with..." menu item to select an application from what is available under the Applications menu, rather than from the often limited list that is presented.

Advanced power management currently cycles the hard drive once every few seconds even during activity on most laptops. This severely shortens the life of hard drives.

It would make ubuntu much less intimidating for windows server admins if there was a gui which allowed configuation of common network services such as:
web
ssh
mail
database
vpn
dhcp
ldap
dns
Some of these are easier than others but I have seen very little work on this front and I think it will help win over windows admins.

While the point is valid in principle, the idea doesn't have enough detail to be implemented ;)
Seriously, that is in part what this site is for, but posting actual suggestions for concrete issues is more helpful.
