Starting applications from terminal
|
|

This idea should be LOCKED;
ALREADY IMPLEMENTED
(as it' poster learned that this is already possible)
This idea should be attached to this idea:
Attach hidden terminal to each application
============================================================
EDIT:
Darn I just found out how this works.
Only thing that is a problem that every shell is linked to it's app, so yo have to have as much shells as there are apps running from them.
You can do this with $ firefox & or any thing else in Tilda or Yakuake
===========================================================
This is how I imagine to slowly get the new users to start using terminal.
For this idea to work it needs Tilda or Yakuake.
All installed applications should be started from terminal.
For now this can only be done (at least on Kubuntu) with base desktop apps (in my case: Konqueror, Kontact,...). But it would really help if any app that is installed like Firefox.
Even novice user would use that as it gives you the feeling of "leet". And slowly this user might started to use terminal for something else rather just starting GUI programs.
Not all of us were born using terminal and Emacs.
=====
I'm all for GUI, heck I even proposed that new user should not ever use terminal, because everything would work great from GUI. But even in that idea I said that terminal should stay, and maybe this is the way for new users to start using it.
==========
I put this under System, but it could be under look and feel as well.

Implement support for the MenuToGo standard
|
|
Written by Auzy the 21 May 08 at 15:52. Category: Others.
Related to: Nothing/Others.
New
|
MenuToGo is a way for developers to add a list of available actions to their archives so that users only need to deal with relevant files. Unlike RPM's or DEB's, it doesn't require files to be packaged in a special way to use, and the menutogo menu-file can simply be dropped into repositories.
An example menu for a source archive may be:
- Read the release notes.
- Install dependencies via APT (if apt is detected)
- Compile Program
- Compile and Install Program
- Uninstall program
Its more user friendly then seeing: autogen.sh, README, xga.c, xga.h,automake.in,src,makefile,COPYING,includes. Newbies wont know how to compile that program or use it! Menutogo solves that!
Screenshots (one showing the advantages) are available here. Click here for Project Page
Other relevent links and download links posted in comments (Please note, MenuToGo is GPL)
MenuToGo is a prototype of idea 7167.

Assaultcube and OpenArena by default

People are always complaining that Linux don`t have good games so having heavy weight games by default would not just easy that situation but also popularize open source games.
When one pc user starts windows and go to the game menu he/she finds minesweeper and solitaire, we should put at least a big game by default so when a new user opens the game menu he/she will be rather surprised and encouraged to look beyond the old cliché that Linux don`t have any good games.
Assaultcube is not that heavy (19 mb) so I think wouldn`t be that much for the Ubuntu to have it on the iso cd by default,
other games like OpenArena or any other could be installed if the space on the disc allows to.

A lot of the 24817 currently listed apps in my synaptic I'm not interested in. It is very likely we are all searching for the same set of extra apps.
Let's have a "most popular" list of let's say 200 apps, where you can easily browse through. This will help the novice user as well as the experienced user to install their fav. apps.
This list can be compiled on a monthly basis, based on the number of full downloads on ubuntu servers for example (only when a method can be found where users are not able to cheat).

Make Synaptic function like Update Manager

When you open it, it doesn't prompt you for the password.
Instead, when you try to do anything that will change the system, such as pressing the Apply or Reload button, then it should ask you.
Update Manager does this, as in when you open it, you can just view the available updates, but only when you press the Install button, are you asked you for your password.
This will be really useful for people who want to open it quick and look at some packages.

..set up a distributed cross-compilation system if you need to. If you don't trust that, build in redundancy and checksumming.
The fact of the matter is that, as illustrated here,
http://mssaleh.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/ubuntu-804-lts-vs-windows-xp-sp3-applic ation-performance-benchmark/
constantly catering to the lowest common denominator in processor instruction sets is getting our butts kicked on performance even by /windows/ in many cases.
I don't want to waste my hardware's capability on i386 code, and I don't want to gentoo users laughing at me.
I want to go to the ubuntu site, pick my general type of machine (preferably using pretty pictures) , and have two choices:
-- Just give me something that works
or
-- I want to make the best use of my hardware
The latter option should let me download a utility that would examine my CPU and create a file (or something to that effect) that could be returned to the ubuntu site and used to choose the right disk image (with the right repository set of course) for my machine.

tomboy rocks somehow, but i dont see why this kind of app should require 20mb of ram.
and i would like to see folders or tree in the notes popup. tomboy shows too few notes in that popup.
i think a rewrite would be best.

Just tried to cancel out of a mkfs in gparted. Gparted then waited on the mkfs process to NATURALLY quit before it stopped (5+min later). I had to kill -9 the mkfs process manually before the gui came back.
Couldn't gparted do a little process management on its own?

Add more options for customizing the menu bar's look

Specifically, I want to be able to fine-tune the font size, type, and color of the menu bar text independently of the rest of the system. You can currently adjust your theme to change it, but it ends up changing all text for all windows. This would be accessible through a right-click on the menu bar, in the same config window as changing the background.
For example, I have a dark background and would like my menu bar font to be white, but I want black text on a white background for all of my windows. The little polishes like this are what make Ubuntu such a good operating system.

Browsing a document in OpenOffice is not changing it

I open a document with OpenOffice (e.g. a .ppt presentation), I browse through it and decide it's not the one I was looking for. When I close it, OpenOffice will ask me if I want to save or dismiss the changes. If you open 5-6 documents like this, it can be quite annoying...
OpenOffice should ignore the fact that I'm closing the document at a different page than the one it opened to...
Please push this idea upstream to the OOo developers...

When you unmount an usb flash memory or a memory card, sometimes you can read "Device safe to remove", but sometimes nothing happens (I think that the message is only shown when it was copying).
I think it would be nice to always show "Safe to remove".
Thanks

Option for multiple monitors in sessions

There should be an option in sessions to start applications from startup on one specific monitor. This way if you have more than one screen you could let one of the screen act as a mediacenter, without having to start the mediacenter app and drag it to the correct screen each time you boot up your computer. An option to specify if the application should start in fullscreen, minimized or maximized would also be nice.

Already implemented

The package descriptions in Synaptic often contain a link to the homepage of the package. It would be nice if they worked as hyperlinks.
(copy/paste is hard and double clicking selects the entire row instead of the word!)
Developer comments
This is already implemented in Hardy Heron!
Not all packages have their homepage yet, but those who have is hyperlinked.

When not using Compiz, Ubuntu is using the Metacity window manager from GNOME.
The minimize animation in Metacity is ugly. It is very trivial and not up to par with other the animations from other operating systems which are over 10 years old.
Please improve the window animation for the Metacity window manager which is what Ubuntu uses by default.

Deskbar comes with a Yahoo search extension.
I propose to add a Google search extension to Deskbar. It would be easy to create one since one for Yahoo already exists.
Many people prefer Google over Yahoo.

Make a extension for Deskbar so that you can do a package search and search the repositories for packages.
