In Nautilus: "preview" mp3/ogg files when mouse hovers over them
Written by Girindor the 20 May 08 at 13:03. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Linux Mint, when the mouse hovers over a sound file in Nautilus for more than 3 or 4 seconds, it starts playing the file without opening any other program, like a media player!

As soon as the mouse leaves the file, it stops.

This is an amazingly convenient feature which I would love to see in Ubuntu!

Internet messinger - Yakuke style
Written by Primož Papič the 20 May 08 at 21:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Yes I know this is not an priority for Ubuntu devs or even something that they should develop, but still...
==============================================================
Priority: None
Realisation: Easy
==============================================================
I know that most of my ideas are about making everything user-friendly and GUI. But I thought of this idea and it is weird but cool.
What if Yakuke could emulate Pidgin or Kopete (or anything else) so I could talk to my friends...
------
On the other hand just use "TALK" program with which all of Ubuntu users could communicate among each others. It should be done in this way:
Me@My-desktop: talk You@Youre-desktop: Hi!
And so on...
What I want to say is to use protocol that would use the about me informations where could also all of my friends could be stored...
Yes I know this second idea is very like Myspace or something as that.
But it might be a good thing...

No Virtual Terminals
Written by gQuigs the 21 May 08 at 21:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On a default desktop system why should we expect users to have any use for non-X virtual terminals? Unfortunately, many of us, use them when we have a problem (program hangs, etc) We need to be "forced" to use them same GUI tools (Gnome-System-Monitor) that the average user would try to use to kill a crashed program.

Notes: Proposal just for desktop. Also, make it relatively easy to turn them back on.

Dependencies:
Requires not using uSplash and just going to X really fast?

Possible Benefits:
Saved Memory: 5-10 Megs? (peanuts but still)
Slicker/Faster Bootup: priceless
No way to accidentally find themselves at a VT
Mostly for the average user

Possible Negatives:
If our GUI tools aren't up to the task of recovering from some crashes
Mostly for the developer/advanced user

*Please tell me items to add to above lists*

Please improve hardware support
Written by vexorian the 28 Mar 08 at 05:43. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I wish for ubuntu to have better support, I assume Canonical really needed to know that Ubuntu does not support all the hardware and I also assume that nobody is working on hardware support.

Try to work on hardware support before it is released, that should fix the issues. I'd like to see all my quite specific devices I got from very mixed hardware brands to work perfectly out of the box.

Include 32 bit depth for video   forum
Written by adityakavoor the 13 Mar 08 at 18:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu has a 24bit color depth by default.

It would be great if it gets a 32 bit color video display which would render better graphics, better video playback and might also help game lovers to run games better on linux.

I always feel video playback is where window$ takes a upper hand over ubuntu... Please fix this.

Remove "Add / Remove Programs"; keep Synaptic
Written by shadowfirebird the 2 Mar 08 at 21:45. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Do we actually need both "Add / Remove Programs" and "Synaptic Package Manager"? --Surely not. And, it's confusing, even to me.

If we only have one, which should we keep? --Synaptic, clearly, since it's more featureful.

Can we make Synaptic more user-friendly to novices? --Yes, easily. Give it "novice" and "expert" modes; maybe tart up the graphics a bit.

Ubuntu should be a project like openSuse or Debian
Written by Nanotron the 28 Feb 08 at 20:47. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Ubuntu is a very nice distribution. But I think Ubuntu would be better when every one who like to develop on it can do this.
I think there must be more developers, who work on Ubuntu.
I think there are very much people who want to be a developer of Ubuntu.
The system must develop from many people and not only from the Canonical developers. Then there can be make more features in new ubuntu versions.
I think Ubuntu has very much good features, but it is very slowly and sometimes I think it could be a Windows OS.
When Ubuntu could be a project like openSuse or Debian, developed from more then the Canonical developers Ubuntu could be a very very good Linux distribution

Brainstorm: have some superpoints
Written by yorian the 29 Feb 08 at 21:08. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Wouldn't it be great to be able to give some more points to an idea that you really really like? Most of the ideas here are nice, but some ideas are -really- great and original. It would be great if I had some, say 10 in a week, extra points that I could give to an idea.

Clean Up The File System Structure
Written by GHynson the 7 Mar 08 at 19:58. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Mom And Pop don't need to worry about folders like /ect /bin /usr /dev ect.
Also, quit using cryptic file names like R1168_apvc-adi.2.6.42.1102-blah.

Grandma has a hard time finding where she downloaded said file to desktop already.

Working icons dumped to the desktop or toolbar after a program install would be nice also.
Half the time I have no idea how to start the program I just apt-get install'ed.
And for Christ's sake!?!?, Why can't I use whitespaces?
This Blah_blah_blah.123 underbar crap is just annoying.
I Love linux, but M$ seems to have gotten the usability right.

Fix X-Server!!
Written by fester225 the 7 Mar 08 at 16:38. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
X-Server is used in many applications (ex: Google Earth), but frequently doesn't get installed correctly. You can correct the X-Server config file, if you know all the options possible, but be prepared for your machine to crash if you get it wrong.

Let's get X-Server to install completely and correctly, and make it easy for the user to fix if it doesn't. And if the user gets it wrong, you should be able to go back to a previous version from the desktop or from a command line.

Remove windows softwares from Ubuntu cd
Written by vinutux the 7 Mar 08 at 19:58. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are a lot of windows apps like firefox, blender ,pidgin ...etc in ubuntu installer cd. Those apps are not needed most of the users coz they are not more interest on windows.
Removing those apps make more space on ubuntu installer cd and use those space for including more necessary applications.

Cities
Written by lastent the 8 Mar 08 at 04:22. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like other important cities to be shown on the installation process where you chose your global position.

For example in Peru only Lima is shown and we have many other important cities where ubuntu is used.

Totem-xine instead of Totem-gstreamer
Written by vinutux the 8 Mar 08 at 04:35. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It is nice idead to install totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer default. It may be resolve most of the problems related to watch DVDs to newbies. If it is not possible with legal reasons install totem-gstreamer default and when some one put a dvd ask for installing additional pluging it is installed totem-xine and xine lib. To install appropriate codecs with totem-gstreamer is difficult such as add new repos from debian and install extra codecs from there.

Xine make better DVD experience compared to other players (menus..etc). Most of the ubuntu users use external programs like vlc ,mplayer or xine-ui instead of default totem for watching dvds.

The idead is
................................

1. install totem-gstreamer as usual

2. When put a dvd in drive ask for installing additional plugins

3. If hit yes automatically remove totem-gstreamer and install totem-xin with dependencies.

Investigating Forking the Linux Kernel, and form a new committee   forum
Written by Auzy the 8 Mar 08 at 06:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Before voting this down, remember the Xfree86 -> Xorg fork. It fixed a lot. Also, its a simple investigation. If enough kernel developers agree, it will turn out to be similar to the Xorg fork, where everything went smoothly, because Xfree fell apart 2 years later.

Currently, the linux kernel is controlled by a very select group of developers. If Linus and Morton says no, regardless of what others think, you have no chance of getting your code added to the mainline. And if you don't make friends with them.

We should look at what I believe is happening (correct me if I'm wrong):
- LKML is a mess, its all arguing developers. If you don't suck up first 3 years in IRC, avoid LKML. New developers aren't really invited
- Linus and Morton control the main kernel, so its still not free. 99% of developers may call it a good patch, but they still can say no. We should open it up to a committee as to what new features should go in, and be more open.
- Fact is they don't care about new technologies, Linus said officially he wants to keep linux normal, and not introduce any because thats what people want. Xorg proves this kind of thinking is incorrect
- Linus does not care about a stable ABI/API for modules at all. While his in charge, expect to have to recompile every installed kernel module every kernel upgrade. I dare someone here to tell me that having to reinstall drivers every minor kernel upgrade is good for endusers. Sure they have to break occasionally, but its any minor upgrade they break at the moment. Even Wireless drivers from Windows XP SP0 still work on SP2, without a recompile.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, I have posted some links to the comments, so people have a better understanding. I see the current situation as the starting of a repeat of the troubles of Xorg.

And I don't want to hear any of that "oh this will destroy linux" crap. The migration from Xfree86 to Xorg did little to destroy X11, and we are all much better off now. Ubuntu tries to hide a lot of the kernels flaws, but if we collaborate with developers and other distro's to form a bigger kernel committee, we will be more free then ever, whilst having a better kernel.

Average user doesn't need command prompt
Written by gareththegeek the 29 Feb 08 at 11:02. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is never really going to take off until the average user can do everything they need to do with their PC without ever having to see the command prompt.

All OS administration etc needs to be possible through the use of dialogs rather than obscure configuration files.

I found it the most tidy Gtk engine (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Aurora+Gtk+Engine?content=56438). Most of the modern themes, including Clearlooks and Human are too glossy and vulgarly.

Dell Ideastorm is better than Brainstorm
Written by flooted the 29 Feb 08 at 11:43. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I hate to say it but Dell's Ideastorm is better than Brainstorm. Ideastorm provides statistics, a far wider range of categories, more options to organize ideas and comments and is better at promoting cooperation and communication between users. Ideastorm also has html enabled so you can add pics and things....

swapless ubuntu
Written by business_jade the 29 Feb 08 at 12:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On modern hardware the only reason swap is really needed is for suspending to disk so separate swap partition is complete waste.

It would be great to modify uswsusp (using kexec for example) to be able to use swap file on any regular partition to perform suspend2disk: 2.6 kernal already allow usage of dynamically allocated file on any partition as a swap file.

This improvement would also help to fix other suspend related issues and will make easier ubuntu-on-usb version.

WHITE LISTS AND BLACK LISTS FOR SPAM
Written by 836v the 29 Feb 08 at 12:30. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi,

I think that there should be a SPAM program or a simple plugin to be included in Evolution and Thunderbird, which would include 2 buttons (besides the spamassassin or spampal methods): One button to add the e-mail addresses to the White list and another button to add the e-mail addresses to the Black list for SPAM.

So the email addresses included in the Whitelist won't go to the SPAM folder, and the other way around for the blacklisted email addresses.

In other words, thus the user rules over the automatic classification of emails made by the spamassasin or spampal methods.

This is very good way to quickly and securely moving the Junk mail to the right folder, while keeping the jam mail in the incoming mail.

Much like Spamfighter or Spamaware do.
