For example, by default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

I propose the Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

Audio/Video/Pictures support would be the bare minimum needed, but TV Tuner support/Web Browser/RSS Reader/whatever else you guys want would be excellent as well.

I know theres already an Ubuntu MC project (which is dead I think?), but it was going off in more of a FrontRow direction, where as I was kinda hoping Ubuntu could implement a proper MC like MCE or MediaPortal.

Setting up versioned directories (or /home file systems) should be an easy thing to do for both users and administrators. If set up

(a) old versions of overwritten files in that directory should be recoverable
(b) the entire directory should be easily synchronised (e.g. between desktop and laptop).

It should be configurable that after a merge only one of the hosts (desktop or laptop) keeps the history, the other only the latest version (and all changes since the latest merge).

In normal usage, having versioning should be completely transparent, both in the GUI as in the command line. Commit should be automatic (well, every time you save a file), not a manual afterwards command (as when using bzr).

In versioned directories/file systems, applications should not keep tilde~ backups of the next-to-latest version or use other similar workarounds. In a sense, Trash is also a workaround of not having versioning. For versioned directories, Trash contains "links" to the latest version (in the versioning system) of deleted (trashed) files.

Update:
"x2go" looks pretty interesting: http://x2go.berlios.de/index-en.html
It uses the NX libs and they also provide a client for Windows. But I have not tested it (yet).

When I am working with someone who only uses only Microsoft Office, I want to be sure that we are looking at EXACTLY the same document. MS Office is very widely used, and therefore I think that 100% compatibility between MS Office and some word processor (or wine) on Ubuntu is important.

Periodically & incrementally send my config files (encrypted & compressed) to an Ubuntu hosted service that stores them. Included is my apt-get repos and a list of installed software.

Future Ubuntu installations will then ask me if I would like to clone one of my previous setups. Also I won't need to be re-asked about using restricted drivers or other non-gpl software as my Ubuntu Lifesaver profile will be aware of those past decisions.
