Allow Web developers to make desktop applications with Webkit/Mozilla widgets

There are masses of Web developers out there, but transfering their skills to desktop applications used to be hard, since different programming languages and completely different interface patterns needed to be learned. Using any Web technology in a desktop application consisted of awkward hacks at getting Mozilla to live in GTK using GTKMozEmbed, which was usually harder to get right than simply learning the alternatives.
These days it is as easy to put a web page into an application as it is to put a button, thanks to WebKit (which has spurred Mozilla to make a less hacky embeddable version). This creates a massive opportunity for getting new applications developed, since Web developers can make a desktop application using all of their current knowledge by doing it all in a WebKit widget. This allows their applications to use synchronous method calls, local storage and resources as well as remote, desktop integration, massive speed increases, no need for servers and all of the administration, cost and security overhead that entails, and so on.
The problems currently facing adoption of this are twofold. Firstly, operating systems like Ubuntu haven't sorted out their WebKit and associated bindings and widget packages yet, making distro-agnostic installation using PackageKit useless, which would be essential when trying to attract developers used to simply publishing to a URL.
Secondly knowledge of these technologies needs to be spread to those communities which it may interest. This would need to come after the package situation has stabilised, and would probably require a few interesting demos to be written. People with one foot in the free desktop camp and one foot in the Web development camp would also be needed for spreading the word.
If successful such an effort could provide a wave of cross-platform applications with the advantages of both Web 2.0 technology and desktop technology. Hopefully the View Source nature of the Web would mean a lot of the new creations would be released as Free Software too :)

Implement at least one idea from every category in the next Ubuntu version

For the next Ubuntu version, make a commitment to implement at least one idea out of the top five for every category.
Of course we know developers look at the brainstorm results and sometimes comment on them, but I think it would be a good idea to make a solid commitment like this acknowledging what Ubuntu's users want.

Linux should develop the platform for device drivers, not drivers itself

Ubuntu and all other Linux distributions tries to implement drivers at kernel level or something like that...
Why linux volunteers write driver ?
Linux should prepare only platform for device driver, not write driver code itself...
after the driver platform, any volunteer may develop driver, but DEVICE VENDORS SHOULD BE encouraged and helped to write drivers for Linux using that driver platform...

Shift Click in Nautilus to work on buttons

If you shift click on a folder it will open in a new window. But if you shift click on one of the buttons like "Up" then it just goes up a folder.
I would like for this function to also work on the control buttons like "Back", "Forward", "Up" and "Reload"
Ie. When you click "Up" it opens the parent folder in a new window and leaves the current window on the same folder.

Application-based filtering

There should be a tool available that can filter which applications are allowed to connect to the internet. It could warn you if the file trying to connect has been altered recently, but this might give a sense of false security since many applications rely on external libraries.
I realize that if users use good security practices and stick to open-source software from the repos, this shouldn't be necessary. However, it would be a powerful extra layer of security. Some people insist on using software from other sources, and it would be useful if you wanted to test if questionable software was phoning home. It would also put people with a windows mindset at ease, since that is the type of user ubuntu seems to target.
There is a tool like this called tuxguardian, but I can't seem to make it work in hardy.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Problem:
A user who wants to convert entire partitions to one file system to another currently needs to move any data that they wish to save to another partition, and manually replace the partition with the desired one.
This effectively makes changing a file system in one pass require an extra amount of storage space equal to the size of the files that the user wishes to save.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Example:
Bob is a new Linux user. He has been dual booting Linux and Windows XP for the past three months and has decided that after giving Ubuntu a try, he feels it suits his needs more than Windows does. But there is a problem. Bob has a 50 Gigabyte external hard-drive that has a single NTFS partition filled with 45 gigabytes of music.
Bob feels that because Ubuntu suits his purposes better than Windows, it would be in his best interest to have his music be on an EXT3 file system, instead of an NTFS. But there is a problem. Bob only has a few gigabytes free on his hard drives, and doesn't have the money to buy a new hard drive.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Solution:
If you take a look at the G-Parted partition manager, You'll notice that there are a few limitations to which file systems we can manipulate to our heart's content. But that doesn't mean that that's how things will stay.
Consider a stand alone application, or perhaps additional functionality added to existing partition managers, that instead of having to
1) Copy files and folders from the unwanted partition to the wanted one to free up space
2) Shrink the unwanted partition, and grow the wanted one
3) repeat
we could just simply say "convert this file system to X file system"
even if the way that it ends up happening is just an automated process of the above, I think that an application like this would save countless hours.
But I dont see why it would need to be as hackish as that. We know the specs of EXT3, RiserFS, and so on, there must be a way that we can mutate a file system from one type, to a comparable / compatible replacement without having to manually copy and paste files.

When I select a music file, video file or picture in Nautilus I would like to get some basic information about them in the status bar:
- For video and music: Length and quality.
- For pictures: Size (in pixels)
I think it's annoying that I have to open a movie just to find out how long it is.

Wine could import real Windows files from an original Win CD/DVD

This might be a stroke of genius or an utter idiocy, you judge.
I seem to understand that the major shortcomings of wine are with the dlls because not all the libraries are emulated and not all are emulated seamlessly (no guilt whatsoever, I realize that the wine guys are doing their best).
So here is the idea.
When installing wine, or from the libraries configuration menu at a later time, there could be an "import original libraries" option, I choose it and I supply an original Windows cd/dvd that I have lying around (we probably all have a couple, even if we just use them as glass coasters).
Then wine runs trough the cd, borrows what it needs to run smooth with direcx and everything else and configures itself.
Final step, playing that damn brand new game or that damn cad application we need so desperately.
It would not exactly be the ideal solution to bug #1 but for somebody it would be way better than dual-booting.
Like it?
P.S. I do not even know if this would be completely legal, if not perhaps it could be implemented as a separate script.
Developer comments
This was frequently done around 5 years ago with Wine installations, but should be largely unhelpful now. Most of the Wine deficiencies are in libraries for which native DLLs aren't usable.

Shuffle/Repeat in Rhythmbox Play Queue

Right now, in the play queue section in rhythmbox, the shuffle button is shown, but does nothing. I propose that when in Play Queue mode, the button is no longer a togglebutton, but a normal button. Clicking it would mix up all the items in the queue in a random order, execpt the one that's playing (that will keep playing.) This would be useful if i chose all the albums I wanted and added them to the play queue, but I wanted to mix things up. Clutter/OpenGL animations for this would be awesome. Also, the repeat button would bring the song that was just played to the back of this line.

the grubsplash should be with a background by default ,it should have the name of the release.(codename & number)
the usplash should have a single line stating "booting kernel xxxx.../shutting down... /restarting.../ect "(somthing like this).
without which ,it gives the user a feeling of it to be a primitive os .(thats what i think)
it would simply add a "line of elegange".
& the usplash should also have the name of the release.(codename & number)

Ubuntu should offer to remove software I once used and now forgot to remove. Graphical apps that show up in the menu I don't forget that much, but I usually install whole shiploads of cli apps that I think I need, which makes my PC slower.
To realise this, Ubuntu should take notes of every app that's started, excluding system apps (echo, ls, cat).

This idea is forfeited. I trust we all learned as much as I did. Have a good day.
"Theoretically, this should be less hit and miss than WINE, because osx is actually a decent, consistent operating system. [[I learned this was not true]] It may, however, require reimplementing quite a lot of code-- quartz, cocoa, carbon, mach, IOKit, what have you. [[dang straight it's a lot of code]]
Right now it's just looking like OSX may get to windows before we do, [[time to start trying harder as an evangelist]] and if it comes down to two awesome desktops and one has native apps and one doesn't, things could get ugly. As far as I'm concerned, this is the reason for GNUstep's existence. [[probably blasphemy there]]
At least get us a feasability report on this. [[Done.]]"

Now, when you plug in a USB audio device, you must manually go into System>Preferences and change the source. This should be done automatically, under the assumption that if the user is actively connecting a device, he or she probably wants to use it.
This should work both for ALSA and OSS.

it would be neat if no matter what piece of hardware we plugged in to our ubuntu pc, if the os does not recognise it, it will send some kind of report about the hardware to a central data base.
the user is also allowed to input data to be sent like make, model, etc as well as the os identify the unit as well.
