Fix Suspend and Hibernate   forum
Written by tighem the 28 Feb 08 at 17:22. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Allow alt-tab while dragging (and other drag&drop improvements)
Written by bslagter the 10 Mar 08 at 17:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see some improvements in dragging support:
* Allow alt-tab (switch active window) while dragging
* Allow drag an attachment from Thunderbird to nautilus
* Allow drag files from Archive manager to nautilus
* Allow drag a picture from nautilus into Open Office
* Focus/raise a window on drop (mouse-up) instead of drag (mouse-down)
* Make it easier to drop files in a full nautilus window to copy/move (for example: popup drop target in bottom while dragging)

Touchscreen support for Tablet PCs
Written by vishalrao the 28 Feb 08 at 14:37. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Better and easier support/installation of touchscreen drivers for Table PCs.

Code could possibly be shared/taken from other projects such as moblin, Ubuntu Mobile etc

DirectX 10.1 support for Wine
Written by Eldmannen the 15 May 08 at 20:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add DirectX 10.1 support for Wine.

This will make Linux a more attractive platform for gamers who currently use Windows but who wish to move to Linux.

Allow file/folder-dragging with right Mouse-Button
Written by Port_Null the 9 Mar 08 at 18:22. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see a right-click-and-drag option: you right-click an icon, and after dragging and releasing out pops a context menu with 'create link here', 'move here' and 'copy here'. It's very useful, and one of the few things I like about Windows XP that Ubuntu doesn't have.

Don't stop bug fixing!
Written by caligarn the 27 Apr 08 at 14:35. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.

I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.

There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.

What do ya'll think?

Follow Path Type File Management
Written by timgrin the 8 Jul 08 at 03:51. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
I found this awesome idea on Gnome-look.org and thought the world should know about it.

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Future+File+Management+Mockup?content=71 112

Quote : All files are presented in a single window; the user is able to move around the files like in an RTS game or Google Earth. An excellent example of this implementation would be the game Defcon. The user is able to zoom in and zoom out and follow the mini-map in order to locate files.

Control center button in System menu
Written by _sebastian_ the 29 Mar 08 at 08:46. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
add a separate button to the System menu to open the Control center.

As the Control center bundles many options in the preferences it would make sense to move it out of the preferences menu.

hardware detection tool
Written by ty35 the 12 Apr 08 at 23:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
if people are ifing and buting about changing their current OS to linux then why not help them by letting them download a hardware detection tool and it compares the users current hardware to ubuntu's hardware database and then let them know what hardware is compatible and what is not.

Improving File Roller
Written by letronje the 6 Mar 08 at 12:36. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
(a)

When the user right clicks on an archive file like zip,rar,7z,etc, the options provided are :

1) Open with archive manager
2) Extract here

It would be nice to have the following menu option:
extract to

(b)

When opening an archive, file roller seems to read the entire archive in one go(or file roller is very slow in reading list of files in an archive). So, if the archive is really big, the user doesn't get to see the list of files & dir in it unless the entire archive hierarchy is fetched. I think WinRAR shows the list of stuff at the top level in the archive & reads the remaining archive hierarchy in background & the list shown in the UI is updated incrementally .

(c)

The File roller UI for creating archives by right clicking on folders is too simple and needs some more options like:

1) Delete files after archiving
2) options for selecting compression level
3) options for splitting archive across multiple files
4) password protection

Again Win RAR has a good UI for this

(d) There could be a context menu option for adding selected file(s)/folders(s) to an existing archive. Something like 'Add to archive'

Improve GNOME MPlayer
Written by loonyphoenix the 15 Apr 08 at 19:25. Category: Multimedia. Related to: MPlayer Movie Player. New
MPlayer, in my opinion, is THE video player for Linux. It's much more functional and stable and speedy than everything else I've tried, including Totem and VLC, but its best GUI is for QT (SMPlayer). There is a somewhat similar GTK+ frontend (GNOME MPlayer; I'm not even talking about the default gmplayer), but the functionality is still lacking compared to SMPlayer. Please improve GNOME MPlayer (or create something similar) so that we can finally have the ultimate video solution for Linux.

If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas. Please consider leaving a comment, even if you don't like the idea, so that I know how to improve it.

The Bulk Rename feature included in the standard image of Ubuntu and Kubuntu. It is a very powerful tool that I can't live without.

Enhance Drivers manager
Written by ilembitov the 4 Jul 08 at 10:02. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
The point here is that Drivers manager should not only download restricted drivers, but it should solve all hardware-related issues where possible. I mean, it should recognize your hardware and download all the drivers available in the repos for you - when the drivers needed aren't on the install CD.

Developer comments
Hi,

There is work under way to enhance the driver manager (called "jockey") to handle more drivers, e.g. printer drivers. Much of this should be seen in the next release.

Workaround for Firefox instability?
Written by hunt.topher the 6 May 08 at 20:26. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's all well and good to include the newest browser in Ubuntu Hardy, even when it's beta. Firefox 3 is aesthetic, fast, safe, and featureful, and undeniably a huge improvement over Firefox 2. However, I experience 5-10 crashes *per day* when visiting common sites like Gmail and Google Reader in Firefox. I'm sorry to have to say this, but for a "stability-centered" release I find this unacceptable and I doubt I'm the only one experiencing these crashes... can Ubuntu find some temporary solution to improve Firefox's stability for the time until Mozilla fixes FF3's stability problems?

EDIT: Other user comments have made it clear to me that this is actually not a widespread problem and might be Flash-related. Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Remove gendered language in Brainstorm
Written by holizz the 17 May 08 at 20:48. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
There's no option in the Brainstorm profile settings to specify my gender, therefore why does it say "His ideas", "Ideas he promoted", etc. on the contributor page of everybody?

I suggest either swapping he for they and his for their, or rephrasing the text to remove the pronouns.

Cultivate a list of OpenSource substitutes for Windows Software
Written by steco the 16 Mar 08 at 15:27. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Often I search for a software which bings me the funcitonality of a specific Windows (or Macintosh) program in my Ubuntu system.
Sometimes I found pearls in Ubuntus repositories I never heard before.

I'd wish to have a well cultivate list of software programs with pros and cons where I can look for if I need new software. Such a list would also be helpful for users who consider to dare to go to Ubuntu.

The list could have a section with success stories of migration to OpenSource Software.
